Good looking shoe. Good workmanship. Decent price. Not comfortable at all. Probably wouldn't buy if I had tried them on in w store.

They were shiner than the picture (like a black lacquer finish but not quite patent leather) and the leather was much stiffer than expected. Similar to another review, the tongue was stitched to the upper which I found rather bizarre. I struggled to get the laces in and gave up at that point - put them back in the box for a return. With Zappos' free shipping I will not spend much time messing with shoes at this price point. Disregard my Comfort and Style star ratings as I never tried on the shoes, but apparently these fields are required to submit a review...

The tongue was sewn to the shoe. I could not get laces to thread. I tried it on with the laces. It felt comfortable to the sole of the foot but the tongue was hurting the front of the ankle.

While I like the style and how the shoes look, it is taking a LONG time to get them broken in. I wear them 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. It has been 3 weeks now and I'm still wearing heavier socks for comfort reasons.

I wear this shoe 2 to 3 times a week and they still have not broken in well. I have a pair of crown aristocrats and there is no comparison. Those shoes are great! I wish I'd spent the additional $200 and purchased those. The Melton cap-toe shoes are stiff and cheap by comparison and still cost almost $200 with shipping. I'll do my due diligence and shop around next time.

I wear Allen Edmonds usually but tried J&M. Bought two colors - Black and Burgundy. Started wearing Black since last week and not too happy because of the squeak. Hoping it will go away once it breaks in. If it doesn't will return the Burgundy and go back to Allen Edmond.

Beautiful shoes but be warned - they are much narrower and smaller than you think. Add leather uppers that won't give (even with a professional shoemaker stretching them) and you'll end up selling or giving them away as I did. I bought Merrell shoes at the same size and the difference in sizing is very significant. I recommend that you buy half to one size larger that you normally do.

Great shoe! I've worn this shoe for years. Fits comfortably right away. This pair seemed to show excessive wear on the leather sole very quickly though. That is very dissapointing when you spend this much on a good pair of shoes.

There was no non skid pads on the sole of the shoe. Had to take them to a local shoe repair to add them.

Purchased what was described as a burgandy show on the website, but received bordeaux. When I inquired I was told they are the same color. The truth is that this color is much, much darker than the color in the catalog. I had to return them.

Great classic shoe that will last a while - only problem is that they squeek when I walk! I feel like I am in an old episode of Cheers anytime I walk down the hall at work.

The bottom lining peeled back on the first pair after about 3 wears. I had to go to the J & M store and exchange for a new pair. The store manager asked if it was ok to send them off for repair - I was a bit disappointed she would dare ask that question since they were out of the box defective. She did immediately provide a replacement pair when I said I didn't prefer having to take them to a repair shop to have the lining glued down. It was unfortunate and a hassle that didn't sit well with me. I haven't had any issues with J & M so maybe I was just a bit unlucky.

Dear J&M,I have bought this shoe many times and I wear it everyday to work. I recently bought a new pair and there are some major inconsistancies. What I have noticed is that the shoe is made in two places (Mexico and India). The shoe I get from Mexico is perfect, fit's like it should/ like a glove ... no complaints. The same shoe I get that is made in India is not good .... does not fit the same ... wider in the middle and back half. Slips up and down on the back-end/ back side of my foot and makes a lot of noise. This is the second pair I have gotten like this ... and both made in India. The same pair I get that is made in Mexico is perfect. I still might go back to the store and request a refund or the same pair made in Mexico; however it would be better if J&M contacted me directly for a refund or another pair. I am seriously considering changing to another brand; however I don't want to because I love this shoe. Please advise?Thank you,Bob Lamkin[...]

Good shoes- can't say they are the best I've ever owned, but I like them nevertheless. They run just a shade big; as my feet warm up in them, they tend to squeak when I walk. I'm sure I'll have them for a long time. I was a little aggravated that none of the shoe stores around carried my size (13), as I really would have liked to have tried them on before ordering (not necessarily J&M's fault, but problematic).

I was a huge fan of a different pair of dress shoes I bought from J&M last year but they were discontinued! I was looking for a similar style and settled on the Melton. The biggest con is how quickly they wear out! I only wear them twice a week and walk a few blocks from the train station to the office and I had to replace tips and heels (about $45) in just a matter of months!

I have been purchasing 1 or 2 pairs of the Melton cap toe for the past several years and I'm normally pretty pleased with the wear and performance -- especially for the value. With the last two pairs, though, I've experienced cracking at the crease just below the laces that started almost immediately after purchase. I regularly use shoe trees and in this case they did nothing to prevent the creasing and cracking. I'll be giving them one more try and then I'll be moving on to another brand.

Average comfort level - A nice looking shoe that seems to be on target for size and width. Just not comfortable after a long day of wearing - especially if you’re on your feet a lot (like when dancing).

Good looking shoe...but runs narrow - This is a very classy looking dress shoe. It would be a perfect shoe if it were as comfortable as it is good looking. Bought these 1 year ago for my dear hubby...and unfortunately they have been sitting in the box much more than he has worn them. He has a medium width foot...but he complains that they are just too narrow. Still kept them in case he had an occasion he just had to have a black dress shoe.

Melton - I have these two pairs of this style shoe and ordered another. These shoes are not the same as previous pairs owned. They are the same size, but fit differently and are longer. I could not tell until I actually wore them for the day they just were not as comfortable and too big. Would try to return or exchange if I could.
