One of the most insanely comfortable, versatile shoes I've ever owned and my go-to winter hiking/running shoes. Good for anything from a snowy day to a light-and-fast 14er ascent, any mileage, any conditions except for maybe scorching hot. I've worn them in snowstorms on Pike's Peak and in sandstorms in Canyonlands and everything in between. While I might grab something else for very warm weather, due to my warm-running feet. As far as fit goes, my feet are strange, but these seem to work for a lot of folks. My toes and the ball of my foot are narrow, but I appreciate the wide toe box. The middle of my foot is wide - it squishes out when I stand on it - and this shoe is wide enough to accommodate that. The heel is wonderfully locked-in, almost grafted to my foot - the instep and heel are controlled superbly. The sole is flexible enough for running, but I've comfortably hiked 15 miles in these shoes. I've also backpacked in them and found them supportive for 30lb loads. The waterproofing is so good that, two years of ownership on, I routinely stand in running creeks to cool my feet off on warm days. The soles are grippy (sufficient for slickrock scrambling in Utah) but durable - they've still got some life in them after two years of regular use. I'd recommend these without hesitation for just about any runner or hiker who regularly deals with wet, snowy, cold, or variable conditions. I might hesitate to wear them in the desert or in hot and/or humid conditions - I'd like something more breathable.

Smaller fit -
These shoes fit a little smaller than expected/comparable to sizing for adidas except they are narrow. I've worn them in the rain and my feet stayed dry.

Have not really tested the shoe yet, but comfy so far.
Hiking shoes are never really "stylish", but these look ok. I have walked a few miles in them just to break them in a bit before going on a long hike i was planning (but never went on) and was pleasantly surprised that the shoes were comfy from the start.

Great for those with narrow foot -
I have a difficult time finding athletic shoes that fit my narrow feet but these shoes fit me perfectly. They do run about one full size small. I normally wear a 9 in most shoes but had to go to a 10 and it fit perfectly. Very comfortable!

Montrail Hurricane -
I'm replacing my well loved and over-used Montrail Leona Divides with this shoe and so far my expectations have been met. What was great was ordering the shoe on Saturday and having it at my door on Monday. Outstanding service from Zappos.com.

Great, tough trail shoe -
It fits about a half size smaller than marked, so bump it up a half and you'll be good. Very tough material and performs great on rocky trails.

Hurricane is awesome - But the top eyelets rip off -
This is a great shoe - super traction - I would not wear any other shoe. I wear them all summer to walk 15 miles every weekend no matter what the weather. The fit is great too with very little break in. My only complaint is that those top plastic eyelets rip off so you need to lace it a little lower. But there still great.

The only other worthy brand would be merrill - but these fit better.

What a shoe!!
So I spend my days running in the rugged mountains of West Virginia. We average ten more inches of rain than Seattle! These shoes keep me dry, supported, and upright through it all. Excellent protection against rocks and roots, they hold well on slippery rocks and moss. The sock like fit keeps you stable. I LOVE THIS SHOE!!! Will never buy a different trail shoe. This is the one!

Even more comfortable than my previous Montrails!
Montrail's are definitely my favorite all purpose shoe. Regular running shoes are too flimsy for my taste and these shoes are perfect for someone who likes the comfort of a running shoe with the stability and sturdiness of a trail shoe. Also, there is no tongue in these shoes which is a big plus in my book because it's one less thing I have to adjust when I go to lace up my shoes and go. These did feel a little bit short in my opinion. I normally wear a 10 and I had to order a 10 1/2 since I am planning on wearing them with socks. Overall this is a great looking shoe that is extremely comfortable and versatile.

Fantastic Shoe -
Wow...this is an amazing shoe. It literally fits like a glove, extremely comfortable, and it breathes! One piece of advice: I can wear anywhere from a 9 1/2 to 10, and had to re-order this from a 10 to a 10 1/2. I recommend going a half size up from what your typical larger sized shoe may be. Oh...and the process to send back the 10 and re-order the 10 1/2 could not have been any easier with Zappos. Free overnight shipping both ways, just print out the label and it's good to go. Love this site.

Have had them for less than a week, but so far they seem to be a well-made, comfortable shoe. A word of warning, however: they are snug around the middle! I haven't found a way to put them on without using a shoehorn. I did try a half-size larger, but then the heel was loose.
Anyway, it will take some time to get used to these compared to my 2002 Montrails that just gave up the ghost. Here's hoping these give me 5 good years, too!

Great for walking!
Love these shoes! Just walked in the Lake District in the UK and they were terrific. BUT, be sure to buy at least one size larger.

I cannot believe...
That I keep finding a shoe that's better than the last one I bought. But it's true -- the XCR is lightweight and breathable and it conforms to the shape of my foot. I put 12 miles on them the first time I wore them and it felt like I could wear them forever.

The ultimate terrain shoe -
I live in Chicago and I wanted a shoe for daily extensive walking, running, as well as being waterproof and snow proof. It's almost impossible to find anything like this shoe, and the few that I have seen have been pretty unappealing, looks wise. As far as fit, I wear a 10.5 in Reebok, Saucony, and New Balance running shoes. I needed an 11 in this shoe. Another thing to note is that I have a narrow foot and this shoe fits me perfectly. I would think if someone has a wide foot that they might even go up 2 sizes, as opposed to me going a 1/2 size larger than the shoes I mentioned. It took about 1 day to break them in, as they're a bit stiffer than your average running shoe, but once I walked around for a day or two, they feel great. As a 5 year owner of the Montrail Java which I still wear to this day, I'm hoping for at least 5 years out of this shoe too, which makes the price totally worth it. Montrails rule!

Fantastic fit -
The shoe fits better than any other hiking/running shoe I've owned in the past few years. The heel is rigid and the toe has room to slightly move. Traction on slippery roads is great.

Great waterproof trail shoe -
This is a lightweight, breathable (yet waterproof) running shoe that has a lot of tread. It's my first pair of Montrails and I'm very happy with them. I have a very narrow foot and they still fit very tight which I prefer. If you don't like a snug fit, I don't think this is the shoe for you. I went to REI, tried them on, and then ordered them from Zappos at a better price, no tax, and free overnight shipping! Had them in less than 24 hours. Thank you.

Montrail Hurricane XCR -
I have a longer narrow foot - normally would wear size 12B - at times have worn 12.5 or 13 in athletic shoes to keep from losing toenails - after reading reviews on this shoe I ordered it in 13 and couldn't be happier with the overall fit. The way that the shoe is designed gives a very snug secure feel at the ankle and the shoe is very supportive while giving ample toe room and a fit that has no hotspots. This is my first product from Montrail but won't be my last.

Great shoe for beach, muddy trails, not rocks -
Excellent construction, fit like gloves. Soles are great for loose trail materials, but very slippery on wet rocks such as found on higher elevations. Have tried them on Spencer Butte near Eugene, OR and on the wet rocks of the Jetty. Had to use hand-holds on larger, slippery rocks. Recommend softer sole shoes for running over wet boulders. Feet kept dry. Will stay with Montrail for ultra trails.

Patagonian Trek to the Horn and more.
Received shoes one day prior to departure for a South American adventure from Chile to the Horn, Uruguay to Argentina. Wide range of climate and conditions. The shoes performed flawlessly. However, be aware that the shoe runs small. I wear a men's 8 street shoe, an 8 1/2 in New Balance, and this shoe worked in a 9.

Great shoe -
Good shoe however needed to order twice due to the shoe feeling a size smaller than on the label. I normally wear 12 had to bump up 12.5, maybe could have even gone 13. Still the best traction sole out there.

Excellent Shoe -
Great shoe. Sturdy, lots of support. Beware, Montrail runs small. I got a full size larger and that worked, especially with shoes that have Gore Tex.

Montrail For Me!
A friend of mine in Colorado turned me on to this brand. I was hiking, walking, and trail running and required a shoe that fit well and offered adequate support to my high arch and narrow foot. I will never go back to another brand of athletic shoe. The fit is great and the traction even better. I hike rocky terrain and this shoe never slips and always grips. What's not to like? It's a great shoe for the money.
