Revised review - I wrote a review earlier and I won't reiterate what's there except to say that the boot has gotten much better with age! I've been wearing it for 2 years everyday for school (I'm a teacher) and also for going out on the town. Wicked soft, comfy, fitting. Where the toes bend, however, there's a little cracking developing on the sides. When these boots go, I'll get another pair!

Second Pair! So this is my second pair of 1914s. A really great boot, with a great look. Sturdy, strong, and will last a long time. Some people below mentioned that it squeaks in the beginning, so I wanted to share my remedy. A little baby powder between the tongue and the boot does the trick! This way you can lace them nice and tight from the beginning with little or no squeakiness. Of course, two pairs of thick socks is also a nice trick to avoid breaking-in pains. Next time, it's the 20-eyelets!

The hurt of breaking in... and the solution! Breaking these boots in was so painful; I was limping around in sneakers while the coolest boots ever sat in my closet. The tough leather had broken in so that it dug into my Achilles tendon, and that hurt all the way up to my knee! I had almost given up, when I ran to Payless and got a few of those heel grips that help slipping/fitting high heels. A couple of those in each boot where it hurts, and problem solved. Now I am sooo happy stompin round and getting compliments, I had to write this review for those who may be having the same problem.

1914 Series Review by Kassie - The boot is great. It takes some time breaking in and somewhat painful to the feet. Once the boot is broken in, wonderful! It helps keep me warmer for these bitter cold days in Wisconsin.

Doc Martens 14 High - Since I have the 20 High that I love so much and two pairs of the 10 High, I decided to return these even though I really like them. I think I like the 20 High so much that these and my 10 Highs seem so short. So, if I weren't keeping the other three pairs, I WOULD be keeping these. They feel great and I highly recommend them...esp. to those who want a compromise...not too tall and not too short. They are great too.

I just got my Dr. Martins 1914 series this evening, and I rushed and put them on. They feel really fantastic. I tied them very tight all the way to the top. They’re kind of broken in already! I’ve had them on for 2 hours. These are my first pair of dm's. Thanks Zappos for the service and really taking care of my order. I will be shopping Zappos for more shoes in the future!

More useful than expected - Quite stiff at first but I wore them with socks that came up to just below the boot top and break in time wasn't bad. I bought these primarily for wear with kilts at Highland games/festivals/dog trials. More often than not the fields for these events are muddy and the hiking boots just didn't "do" the outfit. These look perfect if you don't want to muss up your 'gillies. I was surprised that they also looked great with a black skirt for work at the office (with a white blouse and wild print jacket). I received so many compliments for that and similar outfits with the boots. Just as an aside - the leather of the shaft is stiff and takes a while to soften up but in the meantime it controls your hip sway similar to that of stilettos ;)

A Boot Lover from Illinois - Just added 1914 to my collection of 6 eye, 8 eye greasy and shiny, and 10 eye. Excellent 2 day service from ZAPPOS. Love their selection of shoes. Ordered New Balance for my wife and Adidas supercrush for myself.

Great Boot- I got my DM’s in 2 days and Zappos was everything I hoped for in an online store. The boots are the perfect original Docs, be careful of sizing though. I wear a 10 1/2 normally, but I got the 9s thanks to the UK sizing and they fit great. If you're thinking boots, think Docs. I wear mine to work every day. These are hard leather, so you'll have to break them in. First, get tall socks to avoid rubbing your calves. Then wear them constantly to flex the leather around the ankle. It’s a small price to pay for the fit and comfort that you'll get. The shiny black goes great in a more casual work environment, plus they're perfect for going out especially if you're riding a motorcycle.

The best boot! The best boot ever! I just upgraded from a 10-eyelet to this 14-eyelet. I suppose that the only thing better than this boot would be the 20-eyelet. It looks and feels incredible! Can be worn as a business-casual shoe or as a fun boot. To help breaking them in, try sleeping in them (seriously). It stretches the boot without hurting your legs. It it also fun! As for lacing, I recommend ladder-lacing (see http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straighteuropeanlacing.htm). It tightens the boots more easily and effectively, and also looks nice. My third pair and definitely not the last one. I wear docs almost all the time.

What do you expect? I just got them this morning, and after the first few hours of breaking them in, they already felt fantastic! It fits me perfectly (I have a slightly wide feet). Zappos as usual gave me a top notch service. I'm a bargain hunter, I always search all over before I make a buy, and I always end up buying from Zappos.

Great Shoes - I am incredibly impressed with the service received by Zappos and how efficient they were at ensuring my shoes were delivered to the hotel before I left New York. The shoes are great! I haven't had any problems with the fit and they are far more comfortable than I could have imagined. I feel like I could sleep in them. They take ages to lace up but are comfortable, beautiful and ideal for the rainy weather. Receiving my thumbs up stamp of approval.

Great Service! The first time I recieved my Dr. Marten's 1914 series boot they didn't fit, so I had to unfortuantely send them back, but Zappo's quickly sent me a new pair with a new size, and kept in contact with me througout the purchase. The boots of course are extremely stiff at first, but I am looking forward to breaking them in.

Stomp away - First rule with boots: always buy one size smaller...unless you intend to wear thick socks. Second rule with boots: all boots are hard to break in. A little mink oil and some regular wear will help break them in. I love these boots...they have a very slick finish to such a simple design. Very durable, very comfortable. the price is very reasonable...most shoes are considerd "durable" if they last you a year...docs can last 20+ given the right care. save the oxbloods for the oi kids...the black is classic and bold. zappos is amazing!! recieved the order in less then 12 hours!!!

Best boot I've ever worn - Well worth the price. After rubbing down with mink oil, they broke in in no time at all. Other than the tongue wanting to slide over to the side while wearing, I can't think of anything bad to say about this boot.

Awesome boots!!! These are the most awesome shoes I've ever owned. I've never spent this much on a pair of shoes before, but I think they are worth it. The look is awesome and after you break them in a little they are great to wear.

Some people may think 130-bucks is a bit much for a pair of shoes. You mustn't think that when considering Dr Martens. They are worth every penny. I just bought my 1914 Series a month ago from Zappos and I love them. The 1914's rock to wear with my kilt and short skirts. They just look cool. As far as comfort, they do take a little while to break in. I got the little sores on my heels, but after they have been broken-in they are very comfortable. These boots are very durable as well as comfortable and cool looking. I did abuse my 10 eyelets and they cracked in the bend at the toe. But that was just because I wore mine through snow and puddles and never polished them. As long as you treat them with respect they will last you several years.

Just like the ones I had growing up! When I was 15 my dad took me to buy my first pair of Doc Martens. I've always wanted another pair. This is my first 14 hole Doc. They are very comfortable and I love them! Soon I'll get a 20 hole. I would never buy another brand of boots ever. The price was right and the look is right. I enjoy them very much.

The princess wears combat boots - Living in the valley of paradise has it's draw backs. I was trudging through the snow and ice with improper footwear. I am now set for winter! The 1914 boots are a very chic addition to my winter wardrobe, they look great with my mink coat and my irish kilt. I would also recommend wearing them with any old bridesmaid dress, the 1914 can only help.

If you know what's good for you... You WILL buy these shoes. 'Had my pair for 8 years and worn them to the ends of the earth and back. I love them so much, sometimes I sleep in them. Excellent support, no cramping of the feet and while you're breaking them in, you have an extra bounce to your step, which comes in handy when you're on your feet a lot. They're truly the BEST shoes I've ever had. Any Doc boot is good, but the 14 lace is perfect; not too low (like the Gibson), and not too high. How many other shoes will you still be wearing after 3 boyfriends and thousands of mile markers go by?

Reliable I've had these for three years. They've been on all my college visits and anything else that involves walking for extended periods of time. They're very comfortable and offer lots more support than regular shoes. For a klutz like me, having the support around my ankles has saved me from a number of accidents. They look spiffy with almost anything and can be used as dress shoes as needed. You can run, jump, walk... anything really in these shoes. Dancing is a little difficult, but possible. My only issue with them is the way the tongue slips to the side after wearing them for a while, but you'll find that with almost any boot, I've heard. Also, they take me four minutes to lace up in the morning, but eh. After you've worn these in they will probably be the most comfortable shoe in your closet.
