Favorite Pair of Shoes!! I bought my first pair of Dr. Martens 7 years ago. It took me two pain-stakenly weeks to break them in. My heels were all torn up, but I continued to wear them. I did three things to help with the pain. I wore Band-Aids on my right heel (I had problems with only my right foot), I took them off without untying them, and when they were off, I mushed down the back of the shoe with my feet. Even during the "break-in" period, I never wore a different shoe...this was my everyday shoe. I went to parties, concerts, walking all over Boston/Cambridge. The first pair lasted 5 years...my 2nd pair lasted me 2...so I decided to try something else (of course for less money)...BAD idea!! I'm now buying my 3rd set of Docs and will probably continue to buy only Docs as my everday shoes. They're great, comfortable, long-lasting, sharp looking, and feel like a pair of slippers (once they're broken in). I'll say this...after my first pair, I've NEVER had as tough a break-in period with the others!! So hang in there...they're awesome once they're broken-in. :) Before you know it, you’ll be telling your friends to buy a pair… In regards to size...PAY ATTENTION...they come in UK sizes, which are equivalent to 1/2 to 1 whole size larger (read sizing information)!! I wear a US 7.5...and I buy a UK 5...if I buy a UK 6, they're like wearing flip-flops!!! What other shoe have you owned that you could say you've had for years and still look the same now as when you bought them? Note...use mink oil on them once every 4-6 months to keep them clean and waterproof...

Shoe Size - To all the people complaining about it being too big: make sure you realize these shoes are labeled with British sizes...which are about a size smaller than US ones. Otherwise, great shoe if you get the right size.

I've had these shoes for 2 1/2 yrs and I love them. They look great with the straight cut or slightly flaired jeans that are in style now. I'm tough on shoes, and the back part of the soles tend to wear down fast for me, but on these they've lasted and they're just now looking real crooked. Most heels only last me about 9 months to a year. These are great. I just ordered my second pair of Docs. I have a slightly wide foot, so these worked out great for me. They do seem about a 1/2 size bigger than listed, but if you have a wide foot that's not a problem.

Love 'em!!!! I got these shoes, my first Doc's, four years ago, at my sister's insistence (she is positively INSANE about shoes, if she recommends them, I know they're good!) I wear orthotics, and need shoes that will keep them in place--good, firm, high backs--these are perfect. Well, she was absolutely right--I had to have these shoes. I live in Buffalo, where the weather can be 98 degrees (we DO have beautiful summers), to 40 below zero, and of course, there's the famous snow. I've worn these shoes probably 90% of the time I've had shoes on since I got them, and they're still in perfect condition. I also don't wear boots, unless I'm shoveling (which I avoid, make my daughters do that). So, my Doc's have gone from frozen solid to melting hot, they've climbed through snowbanks, walked through puddles (Buffalo's also a pretty wet place)--you name it!!! They're awesome shoes. AND--I've read the OUCH reviews about the heels--I never had any break-in period, these felt great from the start. I love this brand so much, I bought my daughter (the queen of shoe destruction) a pair of Doc sandals last summer--she outgrew them--but I get them!!! Spending the money wasn't a waste. Love these shoes!!!

Comfortable, Great style, Wears forever I have owed this shoes for 12 years, it still looks great, it was my first pair of Dr Marten's,(I have since bought 6 more styles of Doc) most comfortable pair of shoes I have. I wear these shoes with everything, and everywhere. The price is reduced on Zappos, so you get a awesome value. The day after Chirstmas, I went on a job interview wearing these doc and got several compliments, and I got the job to!

Great Fit & Comfy, Too! From the first wearing, these shoes fit great, feel great & look great! They look as if they'd be heavy; they're not. They complement jeans and 'business casual' attire equally well. These shoes are a good value ... try a pair!

Great look, initially uncomfortable I've had these shoes for 11 months now, and they've really grown on me. Initially, they were quite uncomfortable: the back rim is angled inwards and was cutting through my socks and into my back ankle. I had to place a bandaid on my ankle for awhile, but after a few weeks, the rim opened up. They are now pretty comfortable. The black shoes look really nice with either jeans or slacks. I also have a pair of brown 8053s, which don't look quite as good, but the padded rims make them much more comfortable.

Best Docs available This is simply the best pair of shoes I have ever owned. They look great, they're very comfortable and my last pair lasted for four years. I just purchased my third pair. Doc Martins rock but this pair is the very best.

SOFTENING This works for any shoe that rubs--put some Vaseline on it! Another trick is to put folded up tissues or something to raise your heel up a bit. It also helps to put Vaseline on your feet at any time you'll be walking a lot to prevent friction. Once the shoes are "broken" you won't need the Vaseline. In a pinch I've used hand cream--anything "greasy".

great versatile shoe. Look, the chicks have been dealing with painful shoes forever without whining! Fact is, if you actually wear them, they will break in nicely in just a few weeks. I wear these shoes every day and I have owned several, they are the best, most versatile shoes I have ever worn. If you want a fashion statement, try Rockport or Timberland or some other silly footwear.

I've been wearing docs for about 12 years and I was warry about getting another pair because of the pain and stiffness factor, but the 8053's with the greasy leather and padded collar were too much to resist. I got them and put an insert in them because they are a little too big, but now they fit like a fluffy marshmallow on my foot. I work in a restaurant and they can take a beating and wipe clean. I stepped on a large chunk of broken glass in the parking lot and I was sure glad I had those bad boys on. I think we will be working alot of shifts together. They look good with any outfit and will always be in style.

Patience. I know most of the reviews include some type of pain story related to wearing Docs. Get over it. You spend the same money on other shoes that don't last half as long as Docs and the little bit of pain factor is worth it. Wear them a little bit at a time until you get used to them. Like all shoes, there will be some discomfort, but once they break in, you never will take them off. I know, I tried buying other shoes and eventually resorted back to Docs.

Love this shoe! Great shoe! My husband is a physician and wears his continuously. We bought this same shoe two years ago and broke them in walking around London. Haven't had any problems with the heels as some have had. I have narrow feet and without the 1/2 sizes I wear thicker socks with mine. I think the 1461 is a great classic looking shoe.

Love them!!!!! I love my docs. I have had about 3 or 4 pairs over the last 8 years and would not trade them for the world. I don't remember the ouch part of them. My husband had a hard time in the beginning though.

I only have slightly wider-than-normal feet, but these shoes are so narrow I had to get a full size larger which makes them a tad too long. Otherwise, great shoes.

OK let's come to the defense of the 1461! These are Great shoes, comfortable, value for money, ultra stylish. Never had a problem with wearing these in! Would suggest that anyone feeling a twinge of discomfort simply apply a plaster / band aid to the shoe in the corresponding area! I have probably gotten used to Docs footwear and never wear anything else. If you like the shoes you should try the boots - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Love Em! I got my first pair of these 9 years ago, I still wear them contstantly. They have still not worn down. I got a replacement pair from Zappos.com this year for Christmas. I'll be keeping my old pair to kick around in too. About the Ouch factor: You really need a good two weeks of wearing them to break your feet in. Once you get to know Doc's, there usually is not a problem. My older ones feel like slippers now. One tip to break in the back of the heel, take them on and off without untying them. I know it sounds bad, but it does loosen them and makes the heel more flexible...

I love this shoes :) I bought shoes of Dr Martens 3 years ago. The first month was terrible. I hated this shoe, but when my feet "learnt" Doc Martens, everything changed. Now I wear it very often because they're very comfortable.

First of all, depending on which leather you order will depended on how the shoe fits and where it is made. The smooth leather fits the best but is the stiffest and will take a while to break in.They are made in China and will also last the longest. I have the Nappa leather and tried 2 different sizes one was made in China and one was made in Vietnam. The Carpathain leather is made in Vietnam but was by far more narrow then the Smooth or Nappa. It also didn't have a removeable insole. I have worn Doc Martens for years. For my line of work they are perfect. Classic looks with a great oil resistant sole. Once you break them in the are very comfortable. The quality is much better now then when the first stopped being made in England. You can still buy made in England Doc's there just about 80 bucks more and the leather is just like the smooth. Fit and finish is better from England, but it's more bread and the only place I have seen them is direct from Doc Martens web site. Customer service is by far better buying from Zappos. I never buy shoes anywhere else. Cheers.

These are great shoes and have very good build quality. I've had plenty of English made Dr. Martens shoes in the past but I can't tell the difference between those and these new ones I have now from Zappos. The shoes took about a week to break in, and they were a little squeaky while breaking them in, but they fit very well and are very comfortable. I also get plenty of compliments on them because they look super cool!

I really like these shoes and I know once they are broken in a bit more I will love them. They unfortunately seem a little wide to me. I have a wider foot too, so take that for what it's worth.

These are definitely solid shoes for the price. The black leather is tough enough for work but looks good enough to wear out on the town. The fit seems to run just about normal. I wear these mainly at work and they have proven themselves over the past several weeks.

I have always wanted some "Doc" Martens and I finally did because Zappos had them on sale. I am very happy with them. The soles of my feet are very sensitive and these shoes get me up off the floor. And they're kind of funky. I even got a compliment from a guy on the train who wanted to know where I got them. I didn't tell him. I didn't want him to know where I got my bargain. Probably selfish of me, but I felt special and it felt good. They're stiff at first, but not as stiff as I was led to believe. But after a couple weeks worth of wear, I'm feeling fine. I love the shoes.
