When I started looking for jackets I was used to a dept store 3 in 1. Went to the Arc'teryx store here in town they explained me the differences in the products and jacket types. So very happy with this jacket got the Midnight Sun based on what my good friend said was best and have nothing but compliments on the jacket. Would definitely recommend anything Arc'teryx they well worth it.

I have owned a previous generation of this coat - I wanted a larger size to layer clothes underneath. I wondered if they made the outer sleeve pocket larger to accommodate the larger cell phones of today - answer: They eliminated it. The other big knock on this is they did away with the elastic cuffs, so you have to adjust them every time you put the jacket on and when you take it off - really annoying. I searched the other jackets from ArcTeryx and none have this feature - so a cost savings for them but a real bummer for the user. They moved the two main side pockets down a bit, which works great for me - but might be a problem for backpack wearers. The inside pocket remains the same - and I use this for my phone. It's also lighter then previous generations - which is def. a plus. Finally they changed the collar area that protects your neck - it's higher and provides better protection against wind and rain, but if you don't need to be "Buttoned Up" it's kind of annoying - so great in horrible weather, a bit much when it's not so bad out.
As others notated the waterproof of this jacket does not last - you have to constantly re-coat with some sort of waterproof/repellence product. This is true with all Gore-Tex out there - The fit is excellent - I went a size up to layer winter clothing but even without the extra layers it is not bulky - vents well (pit zips) and the many adjustments on the hood are great.

I love my Beta AR coat! I had a previous version of this jacket for 10 years and just got a new one! This jacket has amazing durability with a bit of care. I love the cut of the jacket as it is a bit longer with good room to layer underneath. I usually wear an XL in most of Arc'teryx's clothing, but this one I did size down a bit to a L, as it still fits my layers underneath well. Arc'teryx gear is well worth the investment!

I wanted a waterproof shell that fit my build well, and that's exactly what I got with this jacket. Just as with every Arcteryx product, quality is top notch. The fit is excellent. I've found that many Arcteryx size small regular cut works very well for my build. Arm length and torso length/width are spot on. I've used this in straight downpours and remained completely dry.
True story, I met up with a friend for lunch. Happened to be during heavy rain. My office is only a couple of miles away so I decided to just walk. Arrived at the restaurant and was told I was nuts for walking out in the rain. Took off my jacket and then whoa you're not even slightly wet? Grabs my jacket (at this time all the water had shed off), holy cow what jacket is this? I could have sworn this was completely wet when you came in. They now own a Zeta AR. Thanks Arcteryx!
For reference I am 5'7 150lbs, 38.5inch chest, small is perfect.

This is an awesome jacket..but the labrynth colour is not as my computer shows. Was hoping for a dark teal but its distinctly green in person.

Finally a jacket that keeps me dry and is so comfortable that I don't mind wearing it. I have owned many other rain/shell jackets and not only did they not keep me dry but I just did not like wearing them so I would avoid it at all cost. I love my Beta AR jacket so much that I find myself wearing it as an outer layer even when it's not raining. I wear it with my Atom LT and it keeps me warm and comfortable in 40 degree weather. If it's around 30 degrees I would wear a warm base layer too. I did a short 3 mile hike in steady rain to test it out and I was completely dry. The water just shakes right off of it. The hood has many adjustments to make it fit just right. At first I did not like the stiff collar but now I appreciate how it keeps the wind out. I am 5'5 and 127lbs and the small fits just right. I had a hard time deciding on the color but I went with Labyrinth and I love it. I love the contrasting color on the zippers too. I can't wait to try it for snowshoeing.

I really like my Beta AR jacket. The negative is the fit....runs large. My Atom AR hoody and Atom LT hoody both fit ME perfectly in men's large.
The Beta AR Jacket runs large for me....specifically, the sleeves are longer than I am used to seeing in size large. However, the medium is too restrictive in the chest and shoulders. I am 6'0" tall, weigh between 195 to 200 pounds, 33" to 34" waste, 43" chest, 33" sleeves. The medium fits perfect in the sleeves but is too tight (restrictive) in the shoulders (won't accomdate layers).
Tweener decision: get the medium and have a limit on layering Vs get the large and just accept the long sleeves and sinch down with the velcro adjustments on the cuffs. I got the large since I must have layers for a range of conditions...sub zero heavy snow to summer rains (farenheit)
4 stars: I love everything except the long sleeves and the high price.

Back in the day, when I used to do all the fun things, I had a very well loved and used Beta AR. I needed to warranty it, but wasn't optimistic that it would be covered. However, to my wonderous surprise, ARCTERYX did warranty my jacket and sent me a new one -- super Fast!! And while I am no longer able to blaze through that chest deep pow or hike the whole of the Appalachian Trail, I can still chase my mini-me's in style and dry comfort!! Thank you ARCTERYX for making me even more grateful that I invested in your product, the Beta AR.

Great Jacket. Very durable. Use it all year. The hood is fantastic for incorporating a helmet under. Lots of pockets make for great storage.

This is.
Used for hiking, around town and mountaineering. It does all these very well in conditions where it is not too warm and where it is expected to be tough. Perfectly sized for these activities too as comfortably enough room to layer underneath.
Incredibly tough looking: I hiked the AT with this jacket and have done hundreds of miles more in the mountains and doesn't look any different. Potentially for mountaineering/ ice climbing the pockets of the alpha would be more suitable but still performs fantastically.
Looks great being worn around town too.
I would say it is overkill for most scenarios if you wanted to get a cheaper jacket that would be fine and certainly on hikes where you would expect to have it in your bag more (I.e. summer) there would be options I would take instead to be lighter and more breathable but that isn't really this jackets fault (you need more than one jacket if you want one to be perfect for every scenario) and it truly is a bomber which acts as an amazing weather protector

This is a very nice jacket - lightweight and fairly robust. It's well cut and nice looking.
If you are long waisted you are going to wish it was just a teeny bit longer.
The pockets are great when you are wearing a pack - and very awkward if you don't have a pack belt blocking the natural place to put your hands on a cold afternoon.

I have owned lots of Arc'teryx gear over the years and treated myself to a new Beta AR this year. I'm sorry to say that this jacket was a very expensive disappointment. There is one thing I expected it to do -- keep me dry -- but it absolutely failed from its very first use.
Since I have had Arc'teryx rain gear in the past and just assume it works, I didn't hesitate to pack this jacket for a Kilimanjaro climb as soon as it arrived. Bad move. We had a few days of rain on the mountain and, though it wasn't extreme or torrential, I found my inner layers consistently got wet. The arms of this jacket soaked through especially quickly, and the only part of me that wasn't wet down to the base layer after a couple hours of hiking in steady rain was the area of my back covered by my pack -- starting from its very first wear!! I so, so wish I had tested this jacket in rain before relying on it as an essential piece of gear. Because I hadn't, I was wet and cold and uncomfortable for much of my climb.
If you're going to just wear this jacket to and from the car on drizzly days, it might be fine. But if you're looking for actual rain gear that will keep you dry in the great outdoors, I'm sorry to say you'll have to look elsewhere.

From Skiing to Climbing to around town, this jacket is the superior jacket of them all. The jacket's fit and durability are a notch above the rest. I was so impressed with my first AR that I bought a second one. I cannot express how incredible this jacket is.

Absolutely love my Beta AR. It's my daily driver and fits well, looks stylish, and is perfect for the rainy climate in which I live. I pair it with a small puffy as an underlayer during the winter and just the shell for the spring/summer.
If I HAD to complain, it would be the collar that flattens after a couple of years... but honestly, it's not a big deal especially since it's been used extensively.

Great looking, great fitting, highly breathable all around wet weather performer. Suitable for the mountains, forests, and going downtown on a wet and windy day. My favorite shell.
I have owned Arc'teryx shells for 15+ years, and this is my favorite.
