ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 vs. ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20

The Nimbus series is known for its plush underfoot feel. The 20th iteration utilizes the same midsole technologies which were present in its predecessor. However, ASICS has done small enhancements to the shoes cushioning system to deliver a more responsive underfoot experience.

Compared to the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 offers a more breathable coverage with its new gradient mesh material. The flexible upper material also provides the foot with a more personalized, glove-like fit.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 continues to deliver a durable construction from the upper to the sole unit. It also provides a reliable outsole grip, an impressive ground feel, and a secure foot lockdown.

Upper

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 features a new lightweight gradient mesh upper. It provides the foot with an open coverage for a well-ventilated running experience. Coupled with the ASICS FluidFit technology, the upper of the shoe also grants a more comfortable, dialed-in fit.

The tongue and collar of the shoe are moderately padded for added comfort and a secure foot lockdown. ASICS also did a small tweak in the lacing system of the shoe. The new lacing design and the discrete eyelets aim to reduce squeezing and irritation without affecting midfoot security.

Lastly, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 features an enhanced heel counter that is specifically designed to support and secure the rear section of the foot.

Midsole

The midsole of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 is made using FLYTEFOAM technology. It is made from organic fiber that provides light and soft underfoot cushioning. It efficiently absorbs shock and delivers high energy return for a more responsive ride.

The GEL-Nimbus 20 uses the FluidRide technology for a satisfying bounce-back and added cushioning. It works impressively well with the notable ASICS Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL Cushioning System. The GEL Cushioning reduces impact shock and delivers a smooth heel-to-toe transition.

The shoe also utilizes the OrthoLite X-40 sock liner that features high-rebound properties. It provides added comfort and an enhanced fit. It also has a moisture-wicking characteristic that keeps the foot dry and odor-free.

Outsole

The outsole of the GEL-Nimbus 20 uses the ASICS High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) material. This material is placed in the high-wear areas of the shoe for durability. This tough rubber material is a good compliment to the DuraSponge technology, which is a durable blown rubber compound that is strategically placed in the forefoot section for durability and cushioning.

The Guidance Line technology is also present in the sole unit of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20. It is a vertical flex groove that runs from the heel to the forefoot. Its purpose is to deliver enhanced gait efficiency.

Ride Quality

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 has a heel-to-toe drop of 10mm for the men’s version and 13mm for the women’s version, which are just the right heel drops for neutral runners.

The shoe is packed with the technologies necessary for a responsive and luxurious running experience. The FylteFoam, FluidRIDE, and GEL Cushioning technologies efficiently absorb shock and promote an efficient gait cycle. The bounce-back and flexibility make the ride quality of the shoe truly impressive.

Comfort and Breathability

The breathability of the shoe is unquestionable. The mesh upper provides adequate ventilation so that feet can breathe well while running, the interior lining provides a smooth, comfortable in-shoe feel, and the seamless construction efficiently reduces irritation.

While the breathability of the shoe is a plus, the tongue of the shoe causes slight discomfort. The tongue of the shoe is too short and it slides off when running. Even if the laces are tightened, the tongue fails to stay in place.

Fit

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 had some fit issues with a narrow forefoot and a tight toe box. However, ASICS has successfully addressed these issues in the new ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20. The forefoot section of this new iteration now provides a snug and comfortable fit. Additionally, the toe box of the shoe is not as tight as that of the older version, and it is spacious enough to free the toes while walking or running.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 running shoe also has an updated heel counter that works incredibly well with the padded collar. It stabilizes and secures the heel comfortably.

Durability

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 is touted to feature high-quality materials and a sturdy construction that lasts for miles. While the shoe is durable, the new version of this running shoe not as superb as that of its predecessor’s.

The upper is carefully attached, and the outsole is well-protected from early wear and tear. However, the minor durability issue can be seen on the shoes new lacing system. The foam underneath is too thin and it is poorly attached to the upper material.

Traction

The traction of the shoe is another positive feature that the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 offers. The outsole configuration delivers an above-average performance while the rubber material supplies durable grip on roads and tracks. Even on slightly wet surfaces, the shoe gives no trouble.
