I've spent the past few years trying to find "my" sneaker a model I can simply purchase and rebuy as needed, that consistently fits/looks/feels the same. In that time, I've been through many Altras and Topos never quite finding the "one."
In any event, I was excited to see that the Escalante had returned to the original footbed the last time I comfortably wore a pair was via the 2.5 era and very happy, in turn, with the updated fit, which does (for me) comfortably accommodate a more narrow heel and splayed set of toes. I also like that it's not over cushioned, and doesn't have any unnecessary bells and whistles: it's just a good, solid shoe (I wear mine for long walks).
I'm on my second pair as of this week, and do have two small complaints (though I'm giving this a 5-star rating): one, there is a noticeable ridge/stiffness in the footbed that I can feel even through the cushioning. It's actually why I *almost* returned my first pair, but after a few days of wearing them in, it goes away. I tried on the 'Form' shoe with my last order, and almost wish there was a way to combine the two into a style that gives a bit more spring but with the roomier toe box, though the Escalante overall fits better, especially with a lower volume foot. Two, I got a solid five months out of my first pair of Escalantes, but really wish there were a way to either revive the soles or change out some other component versus having to buy an entirely new pair of shoes. It just seems like such a short runway for a relatively expensive piece of equipment, but I'd also rather not risk injury by wearing something worn out.
TL, DR: if you're particular about toe splay, want something simple yet functional and miss the 'old' Altras, this is the one sneak for you!

I loved Escalante 1. 2nd & 3rd generations of Escalante had "improvements". Escalante 4 is back to being great! New colors are always fun, but rest on your laurels. This shoe is great

THANK YOU for bringing back the features that made early versions superb! I couldn't wear the 3 version but these are the best ever. Love the gray, already bought 2 pairs (since I'm afraid it will become unavailable) and plan to buy more!

Took these out today for run. Wasn't sure how long I would go but the shoes were amazing. Ended up running a half marathon first time in these. These shoes are back to what Altra is supposed to be. Best edition ever of the escalnates

I am so happy they finally went back to a more original design with the Escalante! My feet are so much happier!
Thank you for listening Altra!

I own three pairs, please never discontinue! I have extremely wide feet at the toes, "wide" width shoes from other brands rarely fit me because the heels are also way too wide and my foot bounces around inside the shoe, getting blisters. These shoes are the perfect shape for my weird feet. Please make more options in this "original" foot shape, or more colors of the escalante, I'll buy them! I appreciate that they're simple, solid color designs so that they can be worn as a daily sneaker. Maybe a dark blue, cranberry, and dark green option would be nice additions. Thank you!

I am someone who has been on a barefoot shoe journey but it's not great for slamming on the pavement, so I ordered these. These have been exactly what I'd hoped for. My mom then also got a pair!

Sizing up half a size is the way to go. I originally bought these as gym shoes, but they are so comfortable I wear them all the time now. The all white is stylish.

The toe bed on these shoes is perfect for people with wide feet! These are super roomy so my toes can splay naturally and I don't feel like they are scrunched up at all. For reference, I normally have to buy wide-width shoes, but these were just regular width. They're also super lightweight and have good flex. I also love the zero drop. I did end up with a blister from how high the back of the shoe goes up on the ankle, but taped up after that it was okay. That will likely get better as they get worn in. The shoestrings were a little shorter than I prefer them to be. Overall, I loved these shoes, and plan to replace my older shoes with them.

These are legit amazing sneakers. I have plantar fasciitis and have been struggling to get back into running again. I started lifting with barefoot shoes, but needed something with a little more cushion for runs. If they're too padded or have too large of a drop, my pain flares up again. I was magically sent a pair of these to review for free and the stars aligned - I freaking love them! No foot pain, they look great, and they don't feel clunky. I'm definitely going to purchase more pairs in different colors. I'd recommend these to anyone. I purchased them in my usual running shoe size.

Had multiple pairs now, trained for marathons and wore these exclusively. They're great. However, the 4 is noticeably narrower than the 3 and rubs more now, and they wear out by 500km every time.

I have had about 7 pairs of Escalantes in the last two years. I'm a nurse in a big city. I walk 1-3 miles each day to work, and then stand on my feet all day. I LOVE the super wide toe box (although I wish it were even wider, my toes touch on both sides.) Altra is one of the few mainstream brands I can fit my pizza shaped feet into. I don't love how fast they wear out. I get about 3 mos of daily wear before they feel spent. All the cushion and comfort is gone. (I also have Torins and olympias, and they do the same thing, so it's not just that these are low cushion shoes.) I tend to rotate and match with my scrubs, so I usually have 3-4 pairs in rotation. I wish Altra had more pairs in the original fit, and I would love them to even add 2-3mm more in toe width. My pinkies are a bit squished. My feet are 25.2x10.2 and I wear a 40.5. I also wish they lasted longer. But, my feet are pretty happy in them, and they seem like the best fit for now.

It amazes me that they continue to assume we want Barbie or neon and the guys get way better color choices. Yuck!

I was very excited about these shoes - zero drop, wide-toe-boxed, with more cushion than the truly minimal Xero zero drop running shoes. But I'm disappointed with how narrow these shoes are. Granted there was no wide for this model, these shoes are narrower than my regular Hokas. There's not enough space for real toe-splay. Altra should make a wide for their non-maximalist running shoes.

After years of Altra Escalante fandom, the new Escalante 4 design gives me terrible foot pain. They are unwearable. I didn't bother trying them on within the 30 day trial period and now I can't return them or wear them.

Shoes feel great! Light weight but supportive, comfortable enough for my entire 12hr shift. Feels similar to Nike Free runs. Wide toe box was initially a little funny looking but very cute style shoe.

Love having a shoe that I can do a fast paced, weight training, agility workout and then go for a run and these shoes do well at both!! Thanks Altra for continuing to offer a low profile shoe... and one that performs so well. I will definitely buy this shoe again.

The sizing is a little tricky. Most Altra shoes run small. I wear a 7 in Altra, but 6 or 6.5 in other brands like Topo. I really like the Escalante 4. The only real issue is the silly laces. They are slippery and come untied often. Fortunately, I keep old laces, so I have a stash of better laces on hand.
The Escalante 4 is a light shoe, nice and flexible, with good width across the toes. I tried the Provision 8, but found them too stiff, so I'm back to Esclante.
