Honestly altra should just remake, exactly, the original Escalante. It was great for road/track ultras. Everything after the first version has had a sole that is too stiff. Quit trying to pander to marathoners.

Best Escalante shoe I've owned thus far! I've had the 2, 2.5 & 3. The 2 & 2.5 were great shoes but were a little too plush for my liking & the toe box was very wide (Great shoes is you have super wide feet). The 3's were too narrow (Great shoe if you have narrow feet). These 4's are a very good sweet spot between the 2.5 & 3. It's gives you a lot of room in the mid foot & toe box but not too much like the 2.5's. Not narrow like the 3's. These are just right! As far as the experience running in this shoe it feels a lot like the 3. More responsive than the 2.5 & SLIGHTLY more firm. They are also more breathable than the 3, comparable to the 2.5's in terms of breathability. Secure & comfortable lock down in the heel/ankle & mid foot. These feel amazing on feet. I ended up buying 2 more pairs of this shoe! Great job Altra for making those well needed adjustments!
I posted a picture of the 2.5's & 4's side by side to show the width difference in the shoe. Unless you have extremely wide feet these 4's will feel amazing for you. I'm usually a 2E/4E in running shoes & these 4's were amazing for me, the 2.5's were a bit too wide in the toe box for me. The 4's have a bit more structure to them than the 2.5's which was a plus for me!
Side Note: I've tried on the Escalante Racer 2 those felt pretty good but was too firm for my liking.

Ultimate flexibility, perfect toe box for independent forefoot mechanics, neutral, a little cushion with maintaining minimalism. Older Lone Peaks, older Escalantes, and Alpine LPs are the only Altras that have worked well for me. The Escalante 4 has been the best followed by Alpine LPs a close second. Never thought the Alpine LP could be beat. Obviously, different uses, but for the purpose of walking........regardless of terrain, the Escalante 4s are the best for me. I'm also hyper-sensitive. 99.9% of shoes will immediately create biomechanical dysfunction somewhere between the foot all the up to the pelvis and in between the pelvis/lower extremity joints. I can where name a shoe including most Altras and they will usually shutdown neuromuscular function in the foot/ankle/knew/hip/trunk/spine. Not the Escalante 4. If you have had good experiences with other Escalantes and the Apline LP, your body will most likely be compatible with these.

I wasn't thrilled with any of the women's models/colors in wide width, so I decided to purchase the Men's Escalante 4 (mens regular is equivalent to womens wide width) instead.
I wear a 10-10.5 wide in womens and went with the mens size 9 in black/white - perfect fit. Of course I wish the color was a bit more feminine, but at least there was a neutral option!
I'm new to the wide toe box, zero drop but I'm absolutely in love with this shoe & hope I never have to go back to traditional tennis shoes. Zero-drop requires some adjustment time - my calves have been BURNING on walks, so I've had to slow it down.
FYI I tried Flux footwear first, but they are ridiculously narrow, so I had to return (also beware their return policy). I wear my new altras for walking and strength training primarily, and I plan to wear them when I visit London for 10 days in October.
So happy with my purchase overall. One critique is I'd like to see more wide-width options for women.

Clunky. Lack style. Don't like the soles. Preferred the 2.5. Seems like the company has lost it's way.

I have wide feet and this is a great shoe for that. I can be a little tight on the top of my feet, but I think that depends on the socks and they're still quite new so I think that will work itself out.

After two foot surgeries I was struggling with finding a proper Gym/Squat shoe so I gave these a shot because they are wide box, zero drop, and tight to the ground. They're the perfect option for me

Great shoe, just watch the stitching. My pair had some stitching come loose and I had to use the warranty.

Zero drop Low cushion is the best choice in my opinion. These shoes feel the same underfoot as my Lone Peaks.
The low cushioning that Altra puts out feels like it mimics natural running which I prefer.

These shoes are so comfortable I have told several of my friends about them. Two of my friends have already ordered a pair! I have to say that I will definitely purchase again. The wide toe box is the seller for me! I'm no spring chicken and I needed that wide part of the shoe!

This is my first pair of road shoes from Altra (have had Altra trail shoes for years) and they seem to hit the sweet spot for what I prefer in a road shoe. Not too much cushion and stack height, but still comfortable for mid distance runs.

Bought these shoes for a minimally cushioned, zero heel to toe, wide toe box, running shoe and that's exactly what I got. Ran the houston half in these and still using them. Lightweight too!.

I absolutely LOVE these shoes! I have looked at scores of different brands of shoes and never found a pair that didn't make my feet hurt until now! My podiatrist recommended these shoes. I had never heard of them. I was reluctant to spend so much money on them but decided I was desperate. My toes were beginning to wrap around each other and I was relegated to sandals so my toes would be free. I was shocked at how good my feet felt in these shoes; so shocked I bought another pair. Please do your feet a favor and try these shoes. They have made all the difference to me. If you had more colors I would buy another pair. How about a navy blue with an accent color in men's 14?

I couldn't wear the Escalante 3 (it gave me ankle pain) but this works great for me. I also like how the footbed feels more flat so my toes aren't pushed into each other. Great level of cushioning without being too much. They also feel more flexible than the Racer 2s. I hope they continue to make the Escalante in this style.

I started wearing altra shoes 8 years ago. Since then my feet have adapted to the extra width and there is no going back. These Escalante's fit perfectly and feel great when walking and running. I'm not a big fan of a lot of cushion so these are perfect for me.

I really like the way these shoes fit. They perform great in the gym and on the track. Also look and feel pretty nice out and about. I’m definitely going to get another color. Definitely 10 out of 10

I own this hose in a couple color ways. It's become my go to everything shoe in the summer from light runs to weekly errands. My only complaint is that the black/white color is 100% blue. I don't mind the blue, but would have been nice to know before buying.

This is a great shoe. I've had shoes from all of the major shoe brands but was getting tired of leg pain from running and finally woke up to the "foam arms race" that is so prevalent. More foam does not equal better shoe and drop height is a huge factor. This is a great "zero drop" shoe and I have had no pain since beginning to run in these shoes several months ago. Keep up the good work Altra!

Ran 630 miles before I realized I needed to buy new shoes. Still walk in them now and then and ordered another pair to continue training. Comfiest running shoe I've ever had. Altra for life!

After trying Astral's wide-toed shoes last year, I became hooked and wanted to find an option with some cushioning. I tried numerous Altras, which I think all look really great. And these Escalantes ended up being what I was looking for: something lightweight and simple with adequate cushioning and a wide toe box. I would say they run slightly large, but maybe that's because the toe box is wide and you don't need to size up like you would for a shoe that has a narrow toe box. So while I'm an 11.5 in brands like Nike and New Balance, I am an 11 for Altra.

This is my favorite shoe to use for both running and walking. The toe box width is very generous and allows me to wear my Correct Toes in the shoe while exercising. I have grown to prefer the original foot shape fit as well, and these give me that. I really hope Altra commits to this general style/framework for the Escalante for the foreseeable future.
