Fit and comfort were excellent. The description says that the upper is Goretex and waterproof, and that is why I bought them. My pair were NOT waterproof. After walking through 6" high grass wet with dew, both my feet were soaked. I think the description that these Alverstone 2's are waterproof is a mistake OR I received a defective pair of shoes. Thankfully, Zappos' excellent customer service approved the return.

Fit and size was accurate. This style is a cost efficient facsimile of the what Merrell offers in their low top hiking line. For half the cost of moab low tops, you have a rugged, purpose built hiking shoe for walking dogs in the wild landscape of outer ring suburbia. Works for me. Plus I can wear these in the office as today the dress code is out the window.

On-line catalog shows the "Waterproof" designation just below the company insignia, but mine came without that, and after reading an earlier review that they were NOT waterproof, I am retuning. The web site needs to remove them from the waterproof category!

Solid hiking shoe. Have not had the chances to do a lot of hiking, but when I have they are very good!`

The perfect shoe for all day adventures

Fit more like a cushy house shoe than a glove. Was very comfortable but maybe best as a neighborhood walking shoe instead of for hiking. I considered keeping the shoe just for that purpose.

I normally order size 13w (or 12.5w if available) - this size 12w fits me great.

The shoes are supportive on the sides and the arches. My feet feel firmly entrenched inside. They are really easy to slip into, also. These are men's size 10. My feet have grown a bit, and my women's size 11 were too tight. These new shoes are just right.

Very comfortable and fits well. Had for 8 months worn only to work(office job) and one of the lace eyelets/loops broke! Basically useless shoe after that. I don’t particularly tie my shoes tight so not sure what the deal is…maybe just a fluke but returning and probably won’t buy again.

In less than two months of moderate use, one of the eyelets has torn. I’m careful about tightening the laces from the toe up but it still failed.

The Merrill Alverstone appears to run much larger than the same size marked Moab.

My foot is too narrow for this shoe. I tried! I will for a narrow size shoe.

The description on Zappos for this shoe says it has a Goretex waterproof liner. Like others who purchased this shoe, it is not waterproof, so I had to return it. If you go onto Merrell's website this shoe is not listed as a waterproof shoe. Zappos needs to update the description. To confirm, look at the photographs. All shoe companies will have something (a tag or printing on the sole) on the shoe that says it's waterproof, this one does not.
