I own Montana gloves and mitts that are now 10 years old. I loved them so much that, now that they are worn down and ready to be replaced, I knew exactly what to get. After trying 3 different sizes of the new Montana gloves AND mitts, I'm just disappointed in TNF. These might still be great for clearing out after a snowstorm, or even watching an outdoor sporting event in a really cold climate, or whatever. They're very warm and the physical quality is still very good.
For skiing, they're garbage. There's no internal liner for your fingers, so your hand is pretty much free to do whatever it wants inside the mitten. No matter what size I tried, gripping a ski pole (or anything else, really) with these is just a waste of time. There needs to be a liner for your fingers inside any pair of mittens intended for winter sports. I can make a full fist inside and the mittens will stay in their normal shape, as if my fingers were still extended and my hand flat.
Additionally, they ditched the amazing goggle wipe that was previously on the thumb. There is also no longer a zippered pouch for hand warmers either. I would order a "nicer" pair but TNF doesn't seem to offer any mittens with any of these features anymore. Really disappointing.

Seemed decent but sizing was too small and had to return.

I am a 5'10" woman, and bought the Men's medium. The compartment for the fingers feels just right for my hand. The thumb compartment feels a bit restricted and compressive. I don't know if this is due to a irregular item that arrived, or if this is the typical fitting. I might try to size up to the Men's Large for a comparison. I bought these to wear on our cold morning walks in the Texas winter months. So when walking four miles, and my hands hung by my side, the thumb may increase in diameter just from that dependent position and therefore feel more restrictive. I can move the thumb over to the compartment of the fingers to be less restrictive on the thumb, however then these are not useful if I were to hold a flashlight, for example. The quality of the mittens is very good.

Mittens are very warm and used for skiing. 2/5 stars because the strap to keep them around your write broke the first time I used them.

Not warm at all, in particular the thumb area. Unable to maintain heat. Very disappointed.

Despite all the claims of being heavy duty, these mittens cannot even withstand typical -10 C (~14 F) Canadian weather for a few minutes before your fingers become unbearably cold.
Really disappointing performance for something that costs almost $100. I will be reconsidering choosing The North Face as a brand I can count on in the future.

Maybe if you wore these in the summer they would keep your hands warm

I have a long list of TNF products. More than I should admit. However these were sent back as could not keep in any warmth.
