This is by far the best coat L.L. Bean has in my opinion. I used to own the older model with the two huge outside breast pockets and I honestly like this new version better. This new parka still has the two outside pockets down by the waist, which are plenty big enough for gloves or mittens. It also has just one outside breast pocket, which is big enough for car keys and maybe a mens wallet, but that's about it. There is a pocket for your cell phone on the inside, as well as a pocket for sunglasses or ski goggles. There is also a pocket by the waist inside which is perfect for holding a hat.The shell is a rugged waterproof/windproof material, that's "slippery" (for lack of a better word) enough to slide a backpack on and off. The insulation is lighter and less bulky than the previous model, yet just as warm. I have a very large head and the hood is plenty big enough for me. I'm a big man, but there is still plenty of room for my L.L. Bean insulated flannel to go on underneath (another product I highly recommend). The zippers are pretty cheesy, but they do their job, so they're good enough. Overall, I love this parka, it's worth the $200 price tag all day, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: 1. Very Comfortable & Cozy feeling 2. Roomy enough without being bulky 3. Love the inside of the sleeves 4. Great hood 5. Warm without being heavy 6. Looks great (I have the navy blue) 7. Love the goggles pouch (use it for my cell phone) 8. Keeps the moisture and wind out 9. Great bang for the buck on sale Cons: 1. While the overall quality of the parka is great, the zippers are terrible and cheap. It's ridiculous that LL Bean would sell such a quality parka and then skimp on the zippers. They are cheap plastic and don't zip easily and they actually feel like they could easily strip or even break. The Velcro isn't great either. Would rather have buttons or something that won't degrade like Velcro does. 2. Would love a few extra pockets. Maybe an inside pocket for money, credit cards and ID.

This Rugged Ridge parka replaces one I purchased seven years ago. That one served me well in the nasty winter of 2013. This one is much lighter but as warm as my old one. The "old farmers almanac " predicts another cold blustery winter. And now I am prepared.

I have lived in both Colorado and Illinois and had a few different heavy winter coats by other brands. The LL Bean Rugged Ridge Parka is by far the warmest. I am 5'6" and weigh 155; I have a stocky build for my height and a small still fits perfect. I would highly recommend this coat!

My son is a coach at the Winnipeg Bluebombers in the CFL. Sitting in the cold winter watching a game in the great white north I was warm and comfortable. It covers your butt on the cold metal seats. I looked like a LL Bean model, boots, gloves and coat. Couldn't be happier and warmer.

The coat is very warm, lots of freedom of movement, a little boxy; seems well made. A minor disappointment is the hand pockets are lower then the older version of the coat---which seemed modeled after the [classic?] pea-coat: where the hand warmer pockets are closer to the chest.

I bought this coat for my husband and he loves it. It is true to size, and very very warm. The length fits nice and the amount of pockets is super helpful. Great purchase.

I sat during a Winnipeg Blue Bombers game in the CFL. This coat was great. It was warm and not bulky. Great in cold wet weather. Hood a little large needs to adjust to fit has some stiffness. The pockets are large and has nice inside pockets for electronics and gloves and glasses.

After returning a coat I purchased from a major brand( the coat didn't fit properly), I decided to buy this coat. Glad I did. Thanks LLBean. It's perfect.

Happy husband! Things he likes.... waterproof, fleece lining on neck, collar with snaps to bundle up, detachable and adjustable hood, zip pockets. Roomy enough to wear comfortably over a sweater, but not too big to wear with a light shirt. Subtle labeling!! Thank you, LLB. The navy jacket has navy embroidery on the chest (not white or gray as pictured). It is barely visible which is second only to no labeling at all. Great purchase.

Great warm, but surprisingly light jacket! Would be nice if LLBean had some more solid and better colors in solids to choose from. It would also be great if they added a faux fur to the hood that can be removed as well... not going to not give it 5 stars because of personal preference, but I would like LLbean to use my suggestions, as I feel other customers would agree:)

I'm a female that has worn a men's small coat for years to get added height through the torso. I wear a ladies medium coat, but this small men's is a great fit. Roomy enough for layers. Waist cord is at my waist! Yay! Three interior pockets. Yay! Bottom draw cord too. Yay! And plenty long to keep my bottom warm too. Yay! Very warm and amazingly lightweight. Yay! Hood if I want it or can remove it, if not. Yay! I am VERY happy with this purchase. Thanks LL Bean! P.S. Cool morning in SC, today. High 30s, with real feel of 23. Parka kept me snuggy warm, for a.m. dog walk.

This is another review from the first one that I gave a one star.I live in Macon,Ga and gave the coat a very poor review back in December 2017.I stated that with clothing on under this coat I was still cold and I was.By chance I was talking to my Doctor about staying cold even with this Rugged Ridge jacket which he has one and loves it.I had a serious medical condition that was causing many problems. Now that im off chemo and doing well I have found this beautiful coat is to warm for middle Georgia.Even on very cold days in the high twenty,s just throw this coat on over a shirt and im good to go and I get cold easy.Water proof, looks and feels great will be buying one next season in a smaller size.Hope this corrects the mistake I made about a very nice coat.

Over the course of a couple of winters, this coat has capably kept me warm and dry in that niche of weather where it is near freezing and precipitation comes as a cold rain or wet snow that melts as it lands on you. I prefer down in general, but there are circumstances and climates when synthetic insulation is the most reliable means of protection against the elements. This coat is a great example of the enormous improvement in warmth to weight ratio, packability, and effectiveness over the past 40 years or so. The waterproof layers have shed the moderate showers and wet snows I have encountered, much better than models from years back, though I have not put it through extreme conditions to find its limits. It has been durable in use and remains attractive and easy to clean up. Plenty of useful and secured pockets, it zips up tight to hold out the worst of weather, and fits well over moderate layering. For the price, this a tremendous value for the scale of my outdoor adventures.

Got it for my husband's Christmas present, in green. He is particular about choosing his own stuff, but a gift is a gift! I'm very pleased that he chooses to wear it, and seems very happy about it. The fit is nice and it kept him warm during the brutal winter we experienced (along with the rest of the U.S.) here in NE Wisconsin.

Perfect for watching an outdoor sporting event in the middle of a NJ winter. Keeps you warm and dry for hours, yet still breaths well. Excellent quality.

Exactly what I was looking for. It is extremely comfortable and light weight for its size. Keeps you nice and warm and is great for shoveling snow in.

This coat is easily one the best coats I have ever owned. I am a skier and love winter and doing anything outdoors in cold weather, so the right gear is important to me. I bought my first LL Bean winter coat 20 to 25 years ago. I still have that coat but it shows some wear so it has been my coat for snow blowing, working in the yard and fishing in cold weather. I've had several other winter coats over this same period by other manufacturers but they never seemed to feel that warm. I walk 2 miles every day during my commute, no matter the weather. This coat has kept me warn and dry walking in sub zero temps, snow, wind rain, you name it. I am always toasty warm in this coat. It's not too bulky so works great for skiing as well although it is slightly longer than I prefer but I guess that is why its called a parka. I highly recommend this coat.

I have received a number of compliments on this parka, which I purchased in the "kelp green" color palette. The pockets on the sides, the interior left chest zip pocket, and the two mesh pockets (interior right, the top one designed to accommodate ski glasses or small goggles -- attached lens wiper) are roomy without being floppy. The front chest exterior zip pocket, though, is a little tight and small, but is adequate for a thin card case, some extra greenbacks or other folded paper. The side pockets' zippers can be a bit scratchy on bare hands, and the Velcro on the cuffs can be a little annoying, occasionally getting caught on the zipper-side Velcro when the parka is unzipped, but that's a minor irritation. The only other quibble is the hood can be a little tricky to detach and re-attach, as compared to some snaps-only or zipper-only brands and models, but it's not a total headache or anything. The fit (on this barrel-chested lad, even) is perfect and smart.

I bought this jacket as a replacement for another Bean jacket that had a zipper failure. I thought i was buying an exact replacement, which I hoped, had a better zipper. It has a much better zipper. The construction of the entire jacket was superior to the previous model. I found the jacket to be much warmer then the previous model. I work as a dog walker in the northeast so I'm out in all kinds of weather. The jacket has done an excellent job for me this winter.

We now have two, one for me (65 years old) and one for my adult son. They fit great, have very useful pockets, zip up and velcro shut to prevent any cold air from getting in, especially if you put the hood up. No need to ever get another type of parka (if these even wear out). I had an earlier version of this parka a few decades ago, wore it for a dozen years, got tired of the color and got a new one, then gave the old one to my son in high school who wore it for another few years until he grew out of it. As an aside, my wife and I are such huge LL Bean fans that we went on our honeymoon in the eighties just a few miles away from the Freeport store. Shopped every day!

Bought this for skiing and it's a perfect fit functionally and otherwise. Inside left pocket is roomy and a great place to keep a couple energy bars. Outside chest-high pocket great for heat packs, credit card, etc. When it came I was surprised at how light it was, thought "no way!" It would be warm enough. Clearly insulation technology has improved since the day my previous NF jacket was made; it's toasty. Great high collar - with the main zipper I can turn the fleece-lined collar up snd the main zipper zips all the way up with my chin completely - and COMFORTABLY - covered. Can't say enough good about this jacket - honestly: a very quality I'm very pleased

This might be the best winter parka I've ever owned. It replaced a 20 year old LL Bean Penobscot parka. It's lighter and much warmer.
