They are noticeably more stable than most. They have very little arch support.

Great shoe for stability and helping with over pronation but not enough cushion

After 2 weeks of wearing them not every day, part of the sole on the bottom is starting to peel off.

On the recommendation of a friend I decided to try Hoka shoes. First the bad news: These shoes tend to run n VERY SMALL. I normally take a 10.5 Wide, but I recently had to go to a size 11 Wide of another brand for my work boots. So, I ordered a size 11 Wide Hoka shoes. I couldn't even get my feet into them! I sent them back and exchanged them for a size 12 Wide. That's a FULL SIZE LARGER than my work boots and a size-and-a-half larger than my older shoes. (I had been wearing Skechers size 10.5 Wife.) Even after I got the larger Hoka shoes, they were a little snug. The good news is, they started fitting better after a couple of days break-in time. Now, they're very comfortable, and make great walking shoes. I would have rated them five stars except for the fit discrepancy. Their size chart was very confusing and provided no help whatsoever. Their measuring instructions were completely contradictory and useless. My conclusion: Wonderful shoes, but the ability to get the right size, horrible. I recommend going to a store and trying some on, because they run very small, compared to standard American sizes. Good luck!

Updating my previous 3 star review. I had previously ordered 11.5 which I wear in almost all my shoes from various companies including Hoka. I currently have 2 Clifton 8s, 3 Arahis (two 5s & one 6), and 1 Bondi 7. The Gaviota is immediately noticeable as narrower and shorter than all of those in the same sizes. For me the Arahi is the pinnacle of Hoka shoes but I wanted to try something different. I returned the 11.5 and got a 12 to replace them. I am still debating whether to keep them but at this price odds are I'll return them for another pair of Arahis. I've only been able to find the Gaviota and Arahi to be shown as stability shoes and even though it may be a gimmick I can tell the difference compared to my other Hokas. I'm primarily a walker. My measured foot size is a solid medium D width but Hokas are too narrow in the standard width, especially the Gaviota, which is why I always order the 2EE wide version. But the Gaviota is also shorter than the others which you will immediately see if you hold them next to any other Hokas you might have. So I would only recommend these for those who may have tried an Arahi and found them too wide. They have a very similar under foot feel but for those with medium to wide foot widths the Arahi is a better choice. I often wonder if most of Hoka's customers have narrow feet. The only shoe company I never have to be concerned about width is Altra, their shoes are actually shaped like human feet. But I really prefer the overall feel and cushioning on Hokas. For the right person with narrow feet the Gaviota would be a great choice but go up a half size, they are short compared to all my other ones.

I've heard a lot about the sneakers but for some reason they don't feel comfortable to me. The front of my sneaker is also already ripped and I've only been using them for 3 weeks. I am a mail carrier and walk a lot but that seems like a little to soon for the sneakers to break down. I gave them a try but wasn't impressed. I'll be going back to adidas ultraboosts.

I have owned numerous Hoka shoes over the years. I always get the Wide as my toe box gets squeezed in a regular. The latest Gaviato 4 I received is different. The Wide size is more narrow, and the 'plush' sole is pretty stiff. In the past when putting on the shoes you could feel an immediate cushion. Not with these

The shoes fit well and felt great. Relieved my foot pain, but the bottom sole fell apart in 20 days. i had to order a new pair and wait another 2 weeks. I thought it appropriate to receive a free pair if something like that happened so fast. But I had to return them and pay full price for another pair.

Great shoe with adequate cushioning. I have numerous foot problems and had serious surgery on one foot. These provide the support and comfort I need. I was disappointed when the fabric on the inside of the shoe near the heel tore in less than six months of wearing. This occured in both L and R shoe. I have never had this problem before in any show I have purchased.

Shoe fits nicely and is comfy. But the rubber tread started to separate from the foam sole in less that 2 weeks. I use these at work where I walk a couple miles a day at most.

Do not buy the Gaviota if you have moderate to severe overpronation. I followed the Hoka online shoe finder and was recommended the Gaviota. Hoka and many other websites tout the Gaviota as one of the best running shoes for runners who overpronate. But the J-frame just doesn't live up to the hype.

I don't know if I bought a defective pair, but the bottom of both soles are lifting. The shoe is very comfortable but I don't know about that issue.

My Gaviota shoes are used for walking. I do not use them for hiking in the hills. I like the fact that they are light in weight, and generally comfortable. One issue, my big toe has worn a hole in the tip of the shoe. I wonder if there are protection pads of some kind that could be inserted into the shoe's tip to prevent this type of accelerated wearing.

I had a pair of the Gaviota 3s that I loved. When it came time to replace them, I got the Gaviota 4. First impressions were they were just as comfortable, but within a few weeks, the pull tab on one shoe ripped off when I used it as it was meant to. Soon after that, some of the black traction on the outsole started peeling off...disappointing.

I absolutely loved the fit and comfort of this shoe. However, after not quite a month of light use (daily wear for work and errands), the tread started to separate. Looking at the other reviews, I found at least 9 other people who wrote about this problem. It must be a manufacturing problem with a particular batch run. Sadly, I returned them under the warranty. This was my first pair of Hokas, and now I am wary about getting another.

I am not at all happy with my Hoka or with Zappos. When you send this kind of money on a pair of shoes they should last more than 2 1/2 months. Zappos doesn’t back up their purchase that you make. Also Hoka is a pain to work with. So all said and done I am finished with both companies.
I'd also recommend:
Zappos don’t back up their products they sell

I owned a few hokas. Not a fan this one feels strange to walk and only wore a few times and the bottom sole is coming off. I never ran in these. Just a few walks. Only wore them maybe 20 times. Not sure if I will buy HOKA's again. For sure not this style/fit.

I bought a pair near the end of last October from TradeHome Shoes. The foam in the heel of shoe started coming apart and falling out by January. I took them back to the store and they let me trade them out for a new pair in February. That new pair was falling apart in April. TradeHome said they would only switch out the shoes once. I am not that hard on shoes. They were only worn 3 days a week for work. Needless to say I was very perturbed that a pair of shoes that cost nearly $200 couldn't make it half a year. The only reason they get the one star is because they were comfortable while the lasted.

These were not cushiony at all. Returning both pairs. One was for my husband and other was mine. Def. worth getting the Bondi and paying more instead of getting these on sale.
