After buying a pair of the Solstice Trainers for the gym, I was excited to try out these shoes for my trail running. I was disappointed immediately when the black and white shoe I ordered was actually black and faint pink (definitely not white). On top of that, the fit was not consistent with the solstice. I wear a Mens 9.5 in all of my shoes. I found that these fit maybe a half size to a full size too small. Disappointed that I have to return

I normally require a wide width shoe, so it was likely these would not work for me. The wide toe box was my main reason for trying them out. And, while it is wide, it is also narrow top to bottom. My toes were visible as I moved them around inside the shoe, and were being compressed (very uncomfortable). As I expected, the width was a problem towards the heel, so the combination of these two fit issues caused me to return.

The positive first: this shoe looks great aesthetically. The red gray and black is classy and sharp and there is a minimalist aspect of the shoe that keeps it from looking huge and clunky. I was looking for a zero-drop shoe with padding as my barefoot shoes are taking a bit of time to get used to (I have had to adjust my stride and gait in order to keep my heel from striking the pavement so hard). Sadly, these shoes have very little stability and when you're perching someone on top of a foot cushion for a good portion of the day or sending them to run in the forest over branches, rocks and uneven terrain. it seems like the rest of the shoe should keep the foot in place to some degree. As a personal trainer, I will have client stand on a cushion to challenge their balance and recruit muscle that may be inactive. But I will not do it for a few hours in a row while running. This is what this sho feels like to me. But like I said, I like the look so I am going to try to wear today for an hour or two and see if my body can adapt. But when I wore the first 2-3 days I had it, I developed hip pain which I am certain came form the instability of my ankle atop the shoe.

First of all, I love Altra and have been wearing them since their Lone Peak 2.5 release (10ish years ago). This is my 2nd pair of Superior 5 and I loved the first ones so I decided to go with a more flashy color. I love the look of the Deep Teal with yellow laces as they remind me of my old Superior 2's. There is definitely a flaw with the right shoe as my toes are rising up through the stretchy upper and hitting the tip of the shoe in an uncomfortable way. I'm disappointed for sure. Perhaps I got a Lemon?!?

These run VERY small. I wear 10.5 in all of my shoes and these were extremely small. I returned them and went to a local running store (because I needed them that day) They custom fit my feet and I ended up getting a 11.5 in this brand.

The shoes are generally solid and Altra provides style for widefeet that other companies don't.
Because I need my laces tight, this seems to have worn out the lace holes and a couple of them broke after only 2 months of wear.

The tongue, or half tongue? It's not really a tongue at all. More like an extension of the inside upper of the shoe. I have a high instep so this did not work at all for me. Once I tried them on the tongue-like flap was riding pretty high along the outside of the shoe and my wife actually started laughing when she saw them on me. A shame really as they were super comfortable and I love the wide toe-box. I overpronate and these kept me nice and stable for the few steps I took around my kitchen. Returning.

All in all, these shoes are of great quality, they are good for less technical terrain, but they run quite narrow. After about thirty miles of wear, I developed pain in my inner midfoot; it was initially tolerable, but became unbearable. As soon as I switched back to my old shoes, the pain subsided. I do have big feet (size 14), so perhaps these shoes need to have a wider option for us Sasquatch folks.
I would recommended to people with "normal" feet.

I had an older pair of the superior, liked them and decided to buy again. The traction is better than the older version, particularly on slippery surfaces. Unfortunately, the lightweight fabric tore right a the connection to the midsole at the ball of the foot after just about a month of occasional use on gravel roads. It seems like the fabric is just too fragile, particularly for a trail shoe.

I've owned multiple pairs of Altra shoes. All have fit great, except for this model. Usually wear a 14, now going to exchange up for a 15 and see if the fit is better. I'll report back.

I have run in the Superior since it was first released many years ago and it is my all-time favorite shoe. Both the Superior 4 and 5 have lacing issues that make it tough to tighten the shoe at the front of the foot. It is fine when hiking or running straight but it is sloppy when running on technical terrain. My forefoot slides around especially when cutting side to side through rocks or down hill. PLEASE fix the lacing to allow the front of the foot to be locked down more, similar to previous models which were awesome. I am struggling to find another that works as well as previous Superiors. Help!

Great idea for the fit, but the fore foot feels floppy on difficult terrain. Laces are also becoming a thing of the past. I think that if yout made a tighter above the toes (not decreasing the width of the toe box), and eliminated the upper laces, you'd have a great product. Make it fit like a sock, and hit the niche market for minimalist runners. Tight but wide.

Loved the 4.0. To me they were the perfect shoe for me. Have 3 pairs of them. When I ordered the 4.5, wasn't expecting and real changes. I was wrong!!! They changed the fabric on the sides of the shoes and made them more narrow. After breaking them in, they did loosen up but have to wear thin socks. Ordered the 5's just hoping they were going to be better. I was wrong!!! Feel even more narrow than the 4.5. If your goal is to make normal shoes at least make a wide version to keep your core buyers happy. Might have to stock up on some 4.5 before they are all gone.

My toenails catch on the seam where the reinforced toe guard meets the upper fabric. For this reason I returned them. I tried the shoe in a half size larger however the shoe is then sloppy and too large. So there is no way around this issue for me.

Tried the Superior 5 for trail running after the King MT was discontinued. Very comfortable shoe but did not perform on slippery or steep terrain for trail running. Fine for dry and less technical trails, but please bring back the King MT for the gnarly stuff.

The Lone Peak 5 size 12 was a perfect fit. Made in China. My new Men's Superior 5 size 12 is a half size too small. Made in Taiwan. I would like to exchange them for a size 12.5. Please process this.

Altras used to be the best shoes for formerly minimal runners out there. They were wide, flexible, and zero drop. Now they're still the latter but otherwise generic running shoes, which many other brands do far better. They're too stiff, too narrow generally, and especially too narrow in the toe box.
I hate every run in these and I feel like I've been conned into buying them.

I had the superior 3, which I loved. This one has the upper inner tongue is stitched---you cannot move it. Made that area of my feet hurt. Also cheaply made

The delamination inside the shoes (upper front) starts within 3 miles of normal walk. I thought it's isolated issue so I ordered another one from different authorized retailer and I had the same exact issue on very 2nd mile of my run. It rubs against the top of my toes and it's un-wearable. This was my 4th pair. I tried 2 different styles from last 1 year. Every shoes had build quality and reliability issue. I met people who felt the same for Altra and it's true. Great comfort but Very Poor quality. I think it's time to say BYE to Altra brand.

1st Altras. Bought because fit is excellent 6 weeks of light/moderate hiking they are tearing on the sides. 10 weeks and they are falling apart. Will never buy Altra shoes again. Trash quality.

Bought these in a 15 for my son. He tried them on and the sneaker is way to short for a 15 so ordering now a different pair in the only two choices for a 16. We love your sneakers/shoes can you please carry more choices in larger sizes. 15's 16's , etc. Love to have more of a choice. He bought me a pair in woman's 9. I love my new sneakers.

I'm now on my third pair. I really like the fit and feel of this shoe. First pair was great to 400+ miles. Two pairs now have de-laminated on the inside where the upper meets the toe cap in less than 30 miles. A shame since I really do like the shoe but it's un-wearable once the delamination starts and it runs against the top of my toes.

The shoes have excellent traction and waterproof capabilities. After a month and a half of wearing them, they had scuffs in the toe area, not like any shoes I've worn in my life. If toe gets reinforced, the shoes get a 5 stars despite having to go a size up. At the moment, avoid this shoe.

The shoes slip on too many surfaces and it’s bad enough that I’m buying a different pair of shoes and in the garbage these go!
