Please, please return to your basic red plaid shirts. I've worn mine out and don't wear the others I've bought, although they are just as comfortable, as much as the red plaid.

I purchased three different colors of the Scotch Plaid shirt and they arrived much quicker than expected. Sadly, although I wear an XL in other high-end shirts from different manufacturers, these flannel shirts run exactly like the L L.Bean Chamois shirts which I had also purchased at the same time; i.e., way too large.
Upon receipt and after trying them on, I had to return them for a size Large, as the XL was just much too baggy. It should be noted that just to be safe, I had also purchased three Chamois shirts in a size Large and although the Large size is also roomy (a bit baggy), the sleeve length is fine. It should also be noted that even when wearing a long sleeve thermal undershirt beneath the size XL, these Scotch Plaid Flannel shirts, as well as he Chamois shirts, still fit much too large for my liking in my 'regular'/'normal' XL size.
I know that I'll be receiving the size Large Scotch Plaid replacements quickly, as L.L.Bean has excellent customer service. I will keep the size Large in hopes that they will shrink a bit. From now on, I will be purchasing the Scotch Plaid Flannel shirts and the Chamois shirts in a size Large, as I'm sure that a size Medium will become just too small after washing...cheers.

first, thanks to bean for bringing back the Black Stewart Tartan. last offered 5 years ago or so, i'm happy to see a true classic return. i stocked up this time, just in case.
this review has 2 purposes: first, to counterbalance the recent negative review that i saw before ordering, claiming that the quality on these has gone down; the fabric isn't what it was, more pilling than usual, etc.
definitely not: the same quality as 5 years ago, when i started buying w/bean. i always wash new shirts twice immediately on receiving, precisely to test them. flying colors this time, as always. same materials, same craft. the fabric plumps & softens, extremely minimal pilling observable only if looked for hard, as will be true of the highest quality flannel fabric. i'm as pleased as ever with the quality, which is high.
and second, to mention a possible caveat: bean, i could be wrong, but it seems that the collars on these are slowly getting smaller over the years. if that's the case, we want to put the brakes on that, and get back to, and maintain, the traditional higher collar that's made these shirts special in these ever-changing times. function comes first, and 'neck snuggle', whether the collar is up Or down, is a huge part of what a flannel is about. if we've started to drift a bit, let's return the traditional fit design to just where it's traditionally been at, and keep it there. thanks.
summary: great shirts, as always, bean. thanks for bringing back the black stewart tartan, and for maintaining your tradition and your quality. i'm Very happy with my purchase.
*for reference, guys, i'm 5'10"/175 lbs, and the XL works best for me.
i like a bigger, cozy fit; no restrictions when moving. if you for whatever reason prefer a closer-to-the-body fit, you might prefer the L.
but after warm washing & normal shrinkage, i find the XL's sleeves to come down just where my wrist likes 'em, and the hem to hang low enough to effectively tuck, but not so low that it'll look weird if you don't. just right.
hope this helps.

I bought this shirt expecting it to be soft and comfortable. It is both. I have washed it a couple of dozen times and it continues to be perfect.
Comes of dryer perfect.

This Scotch plaid has a distant look and feel. Great for the "winter" in the Bay Area of San Francisco.

Great flannel, nothing beats Bean flannel. Color choices and quality are terrific. It's the kind where you get a bunch in multiple patterns. Awesome with Bean jeans and not too bulky, even with a good tuck. Tucks well, also wears well on the outside. Awesome when paired with Bean pull-overs.

Shirt sizes run large. I usually wear large with other brands, but LL Bean's medium fits perfectly. I live in So. Calif., so I probably wear flannel shirts 6 months of the year. They are heavy enough that I don't usually need a jacket during our cooler season, yet they are not so heavy that they are too warm to wear indoors. I usually don't tuck in so I wish they made a version that was flat bottom for untucked wear. I have at least 6 of these shirts in different colors.

This shirt has so many positive things about it. It is comfortable, warm, fits great, goes with a variety of items (pants, jackets, etc), and has a great price. It is a terrific value and I expect for it to last a long time given my history of other purchases from LL Bean. I would highly recommend it and easily trust that others would like this shirt as much as I do.

Bought several different plaids for my husband. The quality is evident and they're all very good looking, as well as being warm without bulk. They launder well other than a bit of curling at the bottom hem upon drying, but fortunately hubby doesn't mind doing a bit of touch-up ironing. He says the traditional fit provides a bit more room around the middle for his elderly self, and is not overly baggy as he'd feared. The tall size is a bit longer than he's used to but not offensively so. His only complaint is that he wishes the collars were not button-down, as he finds that feature annoying and unnecessary in a sport shirt.

A very nice flannel shirt that is generous in size.
A little bit larger than the size selected, but not too excessively.
Softest flannel I've ever owned.
If you're looking for cotton flannel and not wool, this is the one you want.

My husband loves it - so pretty, soft and comfortable. Size of Large Tall fits perfect. It's not been in the laundry yet, but I have no worries.

I have a bunch of these in Lg Tall. They wear like iron and are most definitely worth the money. Not sure the surcharge for Tall is justified, but at least they have them in Tall. Nice selection of colors also.

These flannel shirts are the best! Great styling, easy fit, super soft and comfortable. My husband looks so handsome in this shirt! Also when washed, I usually hang it to dry and the wrinkles are at a minimum. This is one of many LLB flannel shirts that he has, and they never show any wear even after 15 years. A quality product!
