I read a review that said that the shoes had real laces and made it seem that the velcro strap were to help control the laces and provide extra security for the shoe. Perfect for a budding trail runner I thought. I do not believe that was in the description from Zappos though. The shoes do appears to have laces, but they are simply weak elastic strips / faux laces on the surface of the fabric. They provide zero control and zero adjustability for stability and fit. The shoes are basically an oversized toddler shoe. They severely lacking in function for real trail use and honestly I do not know of any preteen wearing my son's size "big kid" that would feel comfortable wearing shoes that look like they were borrowed from their baby brother.
