I had to order these a half-size larger than I usually wear to get a comfortable length. I wish they were just slightly wider. I have high arches, so I had to readjust the laces. (I may remove the strip that holds the laces on top of the tongue.) I replaced the inner soles, which were adequate, with high-quality ones that have excellent arch support. I wear the shoes for throughout the day. They're light and comfortable. They look nice and are relatively unobtrusive since they're all black.

I bought the Escalante 1.5 and liked it although it was a bit too "stretchy" for some of the side/agility work that I do. There was either a design flaw or faulty adhesive used in the tread and the tread started coming apart after only 2months of use. Altra exchanged the shoe for the new Esalante 2. I really love the new "feel" of the 2 as it isn't as stretchy and provides the support I need for just about everything I do in them. BUT, same design flaw/faulty tread adhesive- after only one month of use, the tread is peeling loose on these shoes too. While I love the fit and feel of the Escalante 2, I'm not likely to buy this shoe again because the tread doesn't hold up like it should. I guess if they included a tube of superglue with every new pair, the problem could be solved quickly :-) If it weren't for this one problem, I would certainly recommend the shoe to anyone!

I read one review where it said it ran small, but I found it was more true to size. I ordered half size down, but had to return for my normal size. Other than that, I loved the fit and feel. First pair of Escalantes, but I've owned several Torins. I'm excited to give these another shot.

Pros:
*They are light
*fitting to foot
*with the right socks you can run like the wind
Cons:
*hug too tightly around the heel
*socks need to go over the achilles tendon so it won't create blisters
I'm not an expert when it comes to foot anatomy. above heel curve below the calf between both ankles. I believe that is the achilles and i get blisters from running 3 to 4 miles.
I am an active runner. Every day I run 3 miles to 4 miles. I have run half marathons, and the most I've run in a day is 18miles.
The shoes I ran in previously are brooks. They are comfortable but decided to try altra since I've heard how light they are. And they are very light. I like the snug fit but I have had a bother on my heels, not the bottom part but below achilles.

I've loved the Escalantes for the last several years! Including hiking trail shoes. Your newer version just doesn't stand up to the 1.5's- it's stiff and a bit wide and to fit comfortably you have to tie it too tight.... negates the beautiful comfort of this excellent shoe.... especially for those of us suffering w neuromas or orthotic needs- bring back the 1.5's!!

Great shoe, but not for me! Unfortunately, I really think that if Altra offered wide width shoes, this could be the shoe for me. The wide toe box is great, but without the corresponding midsole width, this is just too uncomfortable for me to run in. I got a HUGE blister from a short, 4 mile run. If you have anatomically flat and wide feet, this shoe is NOT for you, despite reviews saying that it is.

I usually wear a max size of 10 in athletic shoes so I was surprised that the 10 was short. If you have a Tailor's Bunion (bump on the pinkie toe side of the foot), the shape of this shoe/toe area looks perfect. I have a big bunion on the big toe side and the shoe was rather straight there. Not as comfy as I hoped for so I’ll be returning these. My podiatrist recommended this brand so I may still try a size 10.5 but I’m a little nervous it may not work out either.

I've owned 3 pairs of the Altra Lone Peak and the Escalante runs very long compared with those, at least 1/2 size too big. They are stretchy and don't offer a lot of support. I returned them.

I like the large toe box but my foot is not shaped the way the shoe is. My second and third toes are longer than my big toe so they hit the curve. I guess I’ll have to go back to the traditional shoe shape

Ouch -- waaaay too tight across the ball of the foot; I couldn't even get my foot into the shoe without removing the insole. On the plus side: toe room was good, as expected for Altra.

My foot doctor told me to try these but I did not realize they were so flat and wide so I'm not sure what I'm going to do but these just don't work.

I loved the comfort. It's like walking on air. It has a wide toe box which I need. But, the shoe is so difficult to put on .....even with a shoe horn because the heel is kind of flimsy.

Altra, I love you so much, but I'm not loving these shoes. They are just okay. I loved the Escalante 1 and 1.5. This model feels stiff and rigid, and as others have said, the tongue is too short. That said, they did loosen up a bit and feel better once I had about 50 miles on them, and I ran a marathon in them a couple weeks ago with no ill effects. But - I miss the the springiness of the previous model. Bring them back, please!!!

These shoes fit fairly well and are mostly comfortable. Unfortunately I think the toe box area arches inward more than my foot does, so they are not a good match for my particular food configuration.

While I ultimately returned these, I would still recommend that you try them if you are looking for a zero drop shoe, plenty of room in the toe box, and some cushion.
I get tired of saying, "Why aren't shoes shaped like feet?" These shoes are definitely shaped like feet, albeit it in a little bit of an exaggerated way, as another reviewer mentions. They definitely curve in too much to the inside. My big toe was sitting in the middle of the shoe. A nice change from being squished into a narrow toe box, but I think Altra can take it a liiiittle easier on the curved foot shape.
These were firmer than the original Escalante, which made me feel like I was unstable (and walking on a marshmallow). The Escalante 2 did not give me that unstable feeling, but it still offers a nice amount of cushion if you need it. The white is super cute, but the overly shaped toe box makes it look a little goofy.
For reference, I wear a 7.5M in Altra and Merrell, and an 8.0 in most other brands of running shoes. I wear a 38N in Birkenstock. I tried a 7.5M in the Escalante 2 and it fit as expected.
I'd also recommend:

The heel box on these is really stiff- these shoes gave me blisters on my ankle bone and back of ankle. I ran about 10 miles in them and also got blisters on the ball of my foot from them sliding. I've run in the Escalante runner and solstice most recently (Ones and Superior as well). I've been struggling to find a good shoe from altra lately tho.

I broke an ankle and now have hardware in that same ankle. The original shoe I purchased roughly 2 maybe 3 years ago was "perfect" - the 'collar' of the shoe didn't bother the ankle - but the new design is too stiff and high; makes the ankle ache/hurt. I agree with other reviewers - why did you disturb or mess with perfection. So many shoe designs are either too high OR too stiff/hard for me to wear walking/running shoes comfortably.

I fell head over heels for the 1.5, ditching a shoe I had been running in for 10 plus years. The 1.5 wore out and I ordered a 2.0.... such a letdown! Stiffer upper and my foot hurt after only a mile. I immediately went to my local running store and bought out the remaining 1.5s. Please bring them back!

Awful. The last model of these were awesome and I was looking for all black so I could wear them to work (that's the 2 stars). Luckily the Escalante came in all black, but these are not like the last model. They are too stiff, the back of the shoe digs in my ankle and creates blisters.

I was initially concerned that these felt narrower than the Escalante 1.5, and I was right should have sent them back within the 30 days. But what I appreciated so much when I switched from Brooks to Altra in the 1.5's is lacking in the 2. With the 1.5's, my neuroma was unbothered and my calluses disappeared. Both of these issues have resurfaced with the 2's. Very disappointed and hoping that switching to another Altra road shoe will give me back my foot comfort. PLEASE WIDEN THE TOE BOX AGAIN with the next model!

This is my 4th pair of Escalantes (and 8th pair of Altras) and the first time I've been disappointed. I am accustomed to putting a pair on and being able to run 10+ miles with zero discomfort out of the box, but not now! The upper, especially around the tongue of the shoe caused notable pain. I was able to correct this with some creative lacing. The change in the overall stiffness of the shoe caused some numbness in my toes. I sincerely hope Altra reads these reviews, makes corrections and releases a better 2.5 model soon.

I went through 3 pairs of the 1 they were my go to shoe. Was excited to try the 2 and was so disappointed. Not one comfortable run. They were so hard and no spring at all.

I ordered these shoes because I have a pair of Altra boots and love them. I use Superfeet inserts in all of my shoes so the "barefoot" effect of Altra shoes is offset somewhat due to the fact that I use those inserts. I also have a bone spur on the top of one of my feet and in most shoes with an open toe box (no seams) my feet do fine. But this shoe has a seam that was right on top of the bone spur and while I might have been able to live with that, after a day of wearing them indoors, my knee was killing me which was not true in the moring when I put them on. So I returned them. They might do fine for someone else.
I'd also recommend:
Anything with a large toe box, but Zappos doesn't provide a search for that!

I own these shoes in a different color so I assumed these would be the same, since it's the same model, same size. I wore them for a day or two and realize the are too snug. The first pair, from Oct 2019 were made in China, these, Jan 2020 were made in Vietnam. Clearly a quality control problem. And I tossed all the packaging as I assumed they'd be the same!

I cannot wear these shoes. I don’t know what has changed, but they are far too stiff in the upper. Maybe the tape that the laces run under? Unfortunate change; I love Altra shoes and this would have been my second pair of Escalantes. They are just too shallow; and I do not have a particularly high instep. Even with the laces loosened as much as they could be (and the shoes still tie) after ten minutes I was seriously uncomfortable. Back they will go.
Too bad, I liked the look of them.
Interestingly, my new Lone Peaks are *fine*. Just got back from a four mile hike.
Do better, Altra!
