Unfortunatly ?? there is no rain to be expected in Belgium any time soon. So to test this jacket I jumped into the shower.
After five minutes I was still completely dry.
Only when I pointed the shower head fully on the front zipper the water came trough.
The jacket is also a bit noisy, but that should get less in time.
I hope it will prove worth the money, because it surely is expensive.

This is intended as an all purpose jacket. However, Archteryx is geared towards alpinism/climbing. It has a drop hem for more coverage in the back and is intended to be shorter in the front incase you want to use it with a climbing harness. It makes sense to know the features and purpose of the jacket you are buying to avoid being disappointed and complaining online about your uninformed purchase. Great jacket if you know what your buying and why!

Bought it a year ago, have been skying this season paired with an Atom AR as mid layer, absolutely great. I had rain, snow, very cold weather... always performed super. Would repeat again with no doubt

Wow. And I mean wow. I bought my first arc
Ten years ago. Why it took me this long to buy mine for my wife I do not know
I finally figured it out when a friend asked about my jacket . He realized it was the Samejacket that i took on vacation nine years earlier snd it looked the same as new. WOW.

So, here is my review.
After having done many hours of research, I decided to go with the Beta AR.
I measure 6 foot 3 inches, 220 lbs, athletic build and a size Large fit perfect. It allowed for layering without feeling constrictive.
I live in Montreal and winters here tend to be very unpredictable. If its not the cold that gets you, the wind definitely will.
Here are some field tests that I did:
All test were done with a cotton base layer, an Atom LT midlayer and the Beta AR on top.
1) At -2 Celcius, with light winds, 40 mins slow paced walk:
No heat loss. My core was nice and toasty without ever feeling overheated. Wind did not stand a chance. Drop hood was not used. I could have walked another 3 hours without issues.
2) At -10 Celcius with light/medium winds, 40 mins slow paced walk:
Again, no heat loss. Nice and toasty. No wind penetration. Drop hood was not used. I felt comfortable to continue walking longer if needed.
3) At -13 Celcius with medium to heavy winds, 15 mins slow paced walk:
Minor heat loss. I found myself requiring to move just a bit more so that my core temp would go up and I would feel comfortable (meaning that I went from a slow lazy Sunday swagger to a New York I am 5 minutes late to my first job brisk walk).
This time, I used the drop hood, and let me tell you, this thing is FANTASTIC. It is very highly adjustable, which I loved. Wind stood no chance!
With my normal winter coats, winds like this would make me want to seek shelter after only being exposed to it for a minute because it would instantly rob me of heat. With the Beta AR on I felt invincible. Granted you need to move just a bit more to get your core heated, but still, this was something else !
Overall, the jacket performed amazingly well. If I had a thicker mid layer (the Atom AR for example) I believe no heat loss would have occurred.
Taking advantage of these heavy winds, I decided to fill up a full tank of gas. As I stood there for 4 mins, pumping gas into my car, the winds were howling all around me. I glanced over to the other drivers who also happened to be filling up their tanks and they were in AGONY because of the biting frost hitting their non windproof jackets.
I could not believe it. I had no issues. Arc'teryx beat Mother nature. It was an incredible experience !
TL;DR: Buy it, it is worth it.

Need help! In New Zealand for a month with 10yr old Beta AR now falling apart at bottom with next 3 wks to go being more challenging.. Able to buy duct tape today and place around bottom edge to keep drawcord in place. Brought this instead of hybrid light. Please email me if you receive this- have pictures. Bought at Salt Lake City REI autumn 2007. Wore this all over while living in Alaska.

I purchase this jacket to replace my 1997 Marmot Mountain Lightweight Jacket that was simply getting old. So far this jacket has proven itself worth the investment. It provides excellent protection from the elements, has a good hood design, and is much lighter that my previous jacket. I am currently living and trekking in Nepal and I look forward to putting this jacket through it's paces for the next few years.
My only gripe thus far is the lack of elastic in the wrist cuffs. The jacket requires loosening the velcro straps when putting it on or taking it off and I wonder how long the velcro will last. This is a minor detail and may not be an issue if the velcro holds out.

After sending in my Beta SL for warranty repairs 2 months after I got it, they suggested I get a more durable jacket so I upgraded to the Beta AR. I have no regrets! I have used it by itself and with a down sweater and it protects me from the wind and rain. I am looking forward to testing it out further!

I had this shell for 8 years and unfortunately it got stolen last week as I was ending a hiking trip in Oregon (yep). I travelled everywhere with it, from the Andes to the Arctic circle! Pouring rain, snow, wind, mud, from -30C to 30C, bring it! I really enjoyed the hood, armpit zippers and the overall quality and design.
I can tell you that it is probably the most versatile jacket ever created. I'm 5'3 and 120 lbs, wearing size Small and have enough space for a layer underneath if I'm cold. In the winter, I usually (used to) wear it with the Cerium LT down jacket and the Atom hoody jacket or the Covert fleece in the Fall. Also, Arc'teryx offers a lifetime warranty, which is amazing in you plan on keeping that jacket for a while.

I use this jacket for backpacking and everyday rainwear. The jacket is very abrasion resistant and stands up to repeated use. I love the extra space in the shoulders that prevent the arms from sliding up when worn with a pack.

From the first time I put the jacket on I knew it would be a great jacket. It fits perfectly. I got it big enough to put a heavy sweater or light weight down jacket under it. But it isn't too big when I wear it over a T-Shirt. I love it.

Great piece of kit. This jacket goes with me everywhere, from the Rockies in winter to tropical storms in Africa. Layers nicely over a puffy or sweater. Breathes and vents very well. Rolls up small for the pack.

Just worn it for a whole day in Northern British Columbia watching bears and whales. Supremely comfortable, I wouldn't have known I was wearing it, and the air temperature varied from below freezing to above 14 degrees.

This is one great Jacket! Great fit, not too big, not too snug and I'm 5'11 180Lbs. Ample freedom of movement and with a base layers and unabashedly fends off whatever the elements throw at you. I usually wear a Ghost whisperer thin down jacket under it on most ski days and no matter how low the temp or wind speed, I'm always at the right temperature. This is the one jacket that goes everywhere with me! I'm thinking seriously about getting one for my wife this Christmas, what's the old saying? "If you buy quality, you only cry once!"

My experience with Arcteryx goes all the way back to December 2000, when I took a chance on a hitherto unknown brand and pulled the trigger on an unusually short Kappa SP shell (which is still very much in use - even the waterproofing is still going strong). After just a few times out with this marvel of textile engineering, I never even considered looking at any other brands.
Since then, I've added a couple Beta ARs and a Beta FL to the list, wearing the first AR down from years of heavy use (still wearable, just not as waterproof) and the current AR and FL still serving me well.
The fit of the AR is just about as perfect as a jacket can be - there's enough room to layer properly without feeling squeezed, but it can also be worn straight up without feeling like you're wearing a tarp. The sleeves will not hike up when raising your arms and the hem length provides constant coverage no matter how far you bend down.
Even the hood works like a hood should, and this coming from an avowed anti-hood-wearer (childhood thing - bad hoody from mom). It sits properly and snugly on your head and follows its movements easily, even without a helmet.
Beyond this, it's a relatively low-profile jacket, without a lot of extra frills - just the way a jacket should be. It has enough pockets to serve that purpose, but is otherwise economical in materials and weight. The material itself is initially a bit crinkly, but that soon disappears with use. Naturally, the waterproofing and breathability are spot on.
All in all, you won't go wrong with this one.

This was my first Arc shell and I have nothing but great things to say. I've put some high mileage on this shell in pouring rain, blizzards you name it. I've bushwhacked for miles in it. This gore pro jacket is strong and will last you forever. I love the pit zips, I've had them open in light rain and still stayed dry inside the shell. Great jacket for backpacking and many other activities. I am currently trying to cut ounces for some thru and partial hikes and would love to try a lighter shell such as the alpha fl ;). My AR is a size large and slightly big on me but you want layer room. I'm 6' and 185 lbs and could probably downsize to a medium and still have a base and mid on.

Loved this jacket when I first laid eyes on it. Its the cajun red. It's a tank on its own. I wore this in sub zero with over 100 mph winds on Mt. Washington in February and I was snug as a bug. No complaints, no wishes. Just high quality product.

I have taken this jacket to several hiking/camping trips to Alaska with me in some austere conditions that include cold and hard winds. I am also a Federal Emergency Responder who prepositioned for Hurricane Harvey in Texas and participated in the events of Irma and Maria in St Thomas and Puerto Rico. My Beta AR withstand the harsh wind conditions with good ventilation and the brite RED color of the jacket gave me the confidence to know that I was visible. This is a great product that I will take with me on all my outdoor adventures and when called to respond to future events.

Great jacket for layering. I got it for my hike up Kilimanjaro last October, and have used it a ton since. Very durable, and versatile. I'm happy with how many layers I can fit underneath, and how it also fits just on it's own. Just wish the pockets were a little more user friendly :)

amazing jacket for any activity in somewhat chill weather. Fits great over a fleece/hoody/midlayer. Very durable, waterproof, windproof. real goretex pro. I have a lean body, 5.7" height, XS size runs bit bulky for me over just a t-shirt (without midlayer), so for hiking in warm weather I'd prefer Beta SL or LT (probably becase AR is a regular fit, not trim)

Love this jacket! True to it's name, its an all-round great piece. From hiking to snowboarding to general day use this jacket is perfect for them all. Nice length, great hood, and of course super waterproof! I bought an xl so its roomy enough for layers but it's not too baggy to be worn on its own. Best of all, doesn't feel like a sticky garbage bag when you get your sweat on : )
