The toe box is smaller and the shoe fells narrow compared to previous models. These seems to be true for all of the new models of Altra shoes. They used to be my go to brand, but it appears that I can no longer wear them. Will be returning.

I have always liked Altra, especially the Provision line but version 4 is vastly different than previous versions.
What's good - It is far more comfortable, softer platform for the foot and it feels heavenly. Sleeker look, nice response. It has a plusher feel similar to the Torin.
What's bad - Little to no arch support They kept the guide rail and added a wrap-around tongue that is supposed to tighten as your arch needs it but I don't feel it. It never seems to engage the way I think they meant it to. In replace of this 'wrap-around tongue thingy,' they have removed the majority of stability support at the arch. It's a good walking shoe but if you're wanting to run in these and you overpronate, I would be cautious. You don't want to end up with a posterior tibial sprain.
I'd also recommend:
New Balance, Hoka

I love the idea of these shoes with the guide rails. They definitely provide support when needed and the cushion in these shoes is really nice! I couldn't get used to the guide rails pressing in on my heels. It became more uncomfortable the longer I wore them. I also noticed no matter how loose the laces were it always felt as though there was pressure on top of my foot. I think the "fingers" the laces go through also started to hurt the arches of my feet. I felt hot spots on both my arches.

I’ve owned the previous two generations of this shoe. They were great. This one on the other hand is too narrow. I’ll be returning it.

Disappointing, not as good as the 4.0!

I'm not sure why this shoe gets so much hate. I had earlier provisions and for me this is the best one yet. I love the lacing system. It really clamps down on my feet, without being uncomfortable. Super easy to make micro-adjustments to find the right feel. My feet don't move around, and I haven't had any problems with black toenails, as happens with some other shoes. I also have wide feet, and this fit just right. The cushioning feels really nice toovery responsive. Perhaps it does wear out a bit faster than some other soles. But I bought a second one so that I can keep wearing this shoe longer. Also, it looks good!

I have to say - I don't always trust reviews. Who are they? What connection do they have to the seller/provider/etc.? But I can tell you this. I am none of those. I absolutely made the best investment ever with these shoes. I have always been a loyal New Balance for these 2 reasons: One I can get super wide for my toes and two they are made in America. However, a friend turned me on to these and may I say, I am absolutely in love with this model. I tried several of their models but for ME (remember - this is why I don't like reviews - all based on personaility, opinion, and sizes and shapes. We are all so different it is too difficult to tell unless your foot is exactly like mine) anyway for ME - these are - hands down - my favorite sneaker ever in my entire long life! Please don't change the model. As I said - I tried many other models in this brand, this was the best.

Provision 4 gives me the support and cushion to walk 10,000-13,000 steps a day with plantar fasciitis. The GuideRails and InnovArch work for me. I also own a pair of Hoka Bondi but rarely wear them. I'll buy another pair of 4s soon and look for 5s in the future.

I love this particular shoe as it is designed for large runners like myself. It offer great support and it is relatively lightweight. The only thing I don't like is that I am a heel striker and they tend to wear down after 200 miles.

I've been running in Provisions since the 2.5 model. For me, this is the best Provision that you have manufactured and I have no complaints.

I have been looking for a mid stability shoe since the Hoka Vanquish 2 has vanished. This shoe fits great. It is snug around my foot but not tight and I am a size 13. Comparing to the the Paradigm 4.5 where there is a lot more room especially .5-1 inch from my big toe to the tip of the shoe. I have about 175 miles on them with no signs of holes or the shoe about to need to be retired. My only gripe with the shoe is the tongue movement but that isn't enough for me to knock it a star because you don't notice it when running (weird I know).

Best running shoes I’ve ever had! Fit like a glove the first time I put them on. I usually run in New Balance but these are better.

I've ran 50 miles in these so far and I absolutely love them. First time running in Altras, switched because I had form issues, and these shoes have helped and totally eliminated the knee pain I was getting. Other reviews are bashing the tongue and lacing system and the width. The lacing system does look kinda weird, but I actually like the straps around the arch for some additional support. I haven't had any problems with it yet. I don't have the widest feet ever, but I wear the Correct Toes in when I run and I don't feel wanting more toe room after my runs. I will say the tongue is pretty short, and the laces are way too long, they flop around for me, but that's minor. Granted I haven't run in any other Altra models, but I would definitely buy these again.

This shoe has some pretty sweet tech! Loving the new floating arch system built in. Gives me the support under the arch i haven't experienced before with Altra! This is definitely a strong competitor to my old Brooks Adrenalines.. in fact these are better since my toes actually have room to breathe! Not too sloppy, nice and secure fit without compromising the footshape toebox. I'll mention the tongue slips to the side, but seriously that has never bothered me.

I'm a casual late-50's runner, running on streets and sidewalks about 3-4 miles three times a week. Sometimes I'll kick it up and run 5-6 miles on the weekend, and hope to run in a half-marathon soon. I've been running for years, but never could find "the perfect shoe." I've had relatively good success with Brooks, New Balance, Sketchers, and Asics, but my running buddy had been touting his Altras.
Thinking I wanted to be gentle on my knees, I decided to try the Altra Paradigms. It was a mixed experience, as they seemed a little too klunky and my legs had to adjust to the zero drop. I endured some initial pain, but got into my stride and eventually wore them out.
I decided to stick with zero drop Altras, but for my next pair go with a bit less padding. Then I actually bought two pairs -- some Torin Plushes and the Provision 4's. I found the Torin Plush to be a very comfy shoe to wear walking and around the house, and the running was good, too. BUT the Provision 4's!!! What an amazing shoe!!!
The lacing system on my Provision 4's allows me to tighten the laces just right to keep my foot snug. The padding is perfect for concrete and asphalt. They have good ventilation, which helps in hot Texas summers. Best of all, though, my foot is supported from heel to toe with no arch discomfort. I felt the Paradigms had a bit too much arch support for my needs, even though I'm a little flat-footed, so the Provisions solved that issue. There is seriously NOTHING I can say I don't like about these shoes outside of the tongue needing to be repositioned after putting them on.
I will say one more thing -- I used to have lower back pain after running, but Altras have ended that. I'm now more aware of my toes and how they affect both my running and walking. I feel like I use them more; they have been set free! My next pair is going to be another experiment in even less padding. I don't know if it can get any better, but I'm willing to try improving on perfection.

My feet feel spoiled with comfort in these shoes. It’s like walking on clouds. When stationary, there is a little bit of lace bite, but this can be alleviated by loosening, and tying up when the arch is flexed. I didn’t realize how badly my old Altra superiors were worn out until I bought these.

I just got this shoe and it's very comfortable. It's like a slimmed down version of the paradigm 4.5. I haven't worn them much but so far, they're great.

I have used Altra shoes for quite a long time since my first pair of Torins sooo many years ago. I have mostly stayed with the stability offerings since I am a pronator and they have worked for the most part. I have never had to wear my orthotic with Altra shoes which is another plus for me. I was a little skeptical with the new lacing system on this shoe but it is absolutely working for me and that makes me extremly happy.

I love Altra shoes. From my first Altra shoe the Torin so many years ago I have many more successes than failures with them. I am a overpronator so I have mostly stayed with the stability shoes that were offered. I liked the previous Provisions and when they were discontinuing the previous model I thought they were getting away from stability. But with this new version I was a bit skeptical especially with the new lacing system, but I couldn't be happier with them. Another bonus with Altra shoes is that
I do not have to wear my orthotics. I call that a win.

First time running in Altra running shoes, and all I can say is "WOW!" I love it. I have knee issues to include a partial replaced knee, plantar fasciitis and took them for my first run today. No issues at all, and love the way it felt. My knees, legs, foot feel a lot better compared to running with my Hoka One One Gaviota 2. Definitely going to stick with this brand as I love just the way it feels. Thanks Altra!

These are really great shoes. I have historically struggled with soreness in the balls of my feet and excess moisture. These shoes with the mesh uppers and innovative foot bed design are perfect. They are very comfortable, fit perfectly (I have size 14 narrow feet) and have the right amount of cushioning. I can be on my feet all day, even on hard surfaces. I mostly walk aggressively for exercise but mix in some running and balance drills. I totally recommend these shoes. I have a couple of other pairs of Altra shoes and have become a real believer.

Very pleased with them so far. Have about 100 miles on them. Will be my go to for half marathon distances and up. Comfortable and seem durable. Certainly not a light shoe though, as my size 13s are about 12.5ozs each. The guiderail feature seems to help alot with stability in keeping ankles and hips pain free.
