So Heads up Altra fans... I'm REALLY disappointed in these boots. When I just tried them on they felt fine ...but the first time (yesterday morning) I wore them out for an actual hike they killed my ankles. After just a couple miles out they started to poke or fold into my ankles very painfully and no amount of adjusting seemed to fix it. I have worn several pair of altra -both low and med high boot--and always can wear on long hikes right out of box...not these apparently. Can't return to Zappos b/c I've worn them (really good reason to buy hiking boots from REI instead in the future) They are otherwise brand new. So advise if you buy these higher tops from here...be SURE to wear them around house w tags on A LOT b/f you venture out. So So disappointed..These boots wear completely differently from other altras.

I really wanted these boots to fit. I have been looking for a trail walking shoe/low boot to wear in cooler weather for some time. I wear my Altra Olympus or Lone Peaks during the warmer months, but the mesh tops on those isn't warm enough for me in cooler weather. I ordered the same Women's 12 that I wear in my other Altra shoes and chose the Taupe color. I found the length in this boot to run like all my other Altra shoes - at least one full size smaller than any other brand I wear. The midfoot and toe box in these boots was a good fit for my foot, although I found the boot slightly difficult to get my foot into. The tongue is stitched to the uppers all the way up to the small aqua color flash - just where the lacing switches from sewn in loops to the speed lacing hooks. I have a high arch and a high volume foot, so this may not affect others the same way. Once I got my foot into the boot there was enough room in the midfoot for comfort. My problem came with the way the boot upper pressed on my ankle bone. The boot upper is padded and I was wearing nice cushy wool socks, but the pressure was just at the wrong point for my ankle bones. Alternate lacing methods helped slightly, but in the end I concluded that this boot was not for me and I am returning them. If Altra ever offers a low version of the Tushar, I would happily try it since the foot part of this boot felt good to my feet.

I really like the wide toe box and natural foot positioning provided by these boots. The ankle support is just what I need (lots of support esp. laterally) without being heavy. I purchased these as wet boots for canoe tripping. The rubber around toe is sturdy enough to protect my feet from accidental bumps, while the durable fabric uppers will help my feet stay cool. The sides are stiff and will need some breaking in, but feel sturdy. The soles seem grippy enough for stability on wet and muddy trails. Usually a 10 is more than roomy enough for me to wear hiking socks, but this style seems to run very small. I do have wide feet, and this style with the wide toe box is just right. The boot cupped my heel and squeezed my foot so tightly that I wouldn't even consider keeping them in this size, although the width was good. I like them so much that I will get another pair, but going up a full size.

These are a very solid boot. I love the wide toe box that allows my toes to spread. They have good ankle support and great grippy lugs on the soles.

This boot is so comfortable! It really does feel like a sneaker or slipper. I especially liked the way I could lace them snugly around my skinny ankle. Most boots are so stiff that I usually have a gape around my ankle. Altra amazing foot shape is great for toe splay, which is essential for balance.
In the end though, I must return. I had ankle fusion surgery, hence the negative heel is bad. I tried a heel lift but that was really uncomfortable.
Thank you, Zappos for allowing those of us with ankle/foot issues to keep searching for the perfect shoes.

These boots are so ugly but so comfy. I had to order a half size up since they run small and I use orthodics. I have the running shoes in the same brand and they run true to size. I feel like a clown in them but figured it doesn't matter when you're on the trail.

I generally wear woman's 11 M, with a midweight sock and custom orthotic, but an 11.5 would be ideal, if I could find that. At the time I ordered, they were out of 11, so I ordered size 12. I also tried on the Teva Montera, the Teva Sugarpine, the Teva Grandview GTX, and the Hi-Tec Bandera. Because of the orthotic, I removed the insoles from all boots I tried. The Grandview and Bandera were out because they were too small with my orthotics. The other Teva's (size 11) fit well and I ultimately chose the Teva Sugarpine because it was half the weight of the Tushar and the Tushar was very hot after only a few minutes of wear in the house. The Tushar was a close second, though, largely because the fit was absolutely perfect. I was skeptical about the fit before I put it on, because the toe box is massive.. think bozo the clown shoes. But the midfoot and heel fit snugly with absolutely no slippage, even though I got them a full size up from what I usually wear. They were somewhat difficult to get on because of the snug mid-foot area, but they really lost out because they were twice as heavy as the Sugarpines, and they were much hotter after wearing for a few minutes inside on a 60 degree day. The fact that the clownish appearance did not deter me from strongly considering them tells you how impressed I was with the fit.

I’ve been searching for a new hiking boot for a long time and always struggled to find a toe box that could accommodate my wide feet. These totally fit the bill and are super comfortable for long backpacking trips (10-20 miles per day - no blisters!). I normally wear a 9 in everything, but took the advice of reviewers and went with a 9.5. Size turned out perfect. They’re not the cutest style ever, but worth it for the fit.

I have been an Altra consumer for years! While I love the running and trail shoes, I have long waited for higher hiking shoes. It took about a week to break these in around the ankles, but once broken in I cannot get enough of them. My foot problems from having metal joints in two toes are gone when wearing these, which I can't say is true for my other pairs of Altra shoes. The stability and support are incredible!!!

This is a well made, lightweight, but sturdy boot. Long thick laces with many hooks to adjust as needed. I've worn maybe 10 times and so far so good.

Big kudos to Altra for coming out with a hiking boot with zero drop and natural-shaped toe box. I have a neuroma in my right forefoot and both these features are essential for me. The toe box volume is good. The sole does not have a lot of cushion the way the Hoka plush boots do, but it does have very good shock absorption. I like the lacing to the sides of the ankle to lock in the forefoot, but the folds of the tongue can press on my ankle tendons so that I need to put a bunion pad between me and the tongue to alleviate the discomfort. This may ease up with more wear. One main issue is the flex in the sole of the boot. I understand that Altra purposefully designed the "Inner Flex", however, for me it is too flexible and puts too much stress on the metatarsal heads of each foot. If the sole were stiffer I would give this a five star rating.

I liked the look, the color and that the size was right. I returned them because they weren't as comfy as the Altra shoes I've purchased. They weren't bad but my ankles can't handle the high tops long enough to break them in. Frankly, it was more me (sensitive ankles) than the boots. I wish I wasn't so sensitive because I really wanted them to work. I can't handle the constrictive toe box of any footwear since I found Altras. I hope they make more boots in other styles. I will definitely try them if they do.

Close but no potatoe! I am a somewaht overweight 55 year old with age and exertion related "itis" issues but still moving albiet not very gracefully! The conformation of my feet and ankles is extremely normal! Suffering from bruised toes on moderate hikes I have begun the aged 55 hunt for hiking shoes (as opposed to age 50, 45, 40 and all). These boots are so close! Pros. Plenty of room in the toe box for my longer toes and anathema of pressure around my forefoot. Excellent lacing including a speed hook that nicely straps the heel down eliminating the need for any fancy lacing. This same speed hook Beautifully secures the heel without the need to lace the heel in oppressively tight which is another pressure anathema to my feet. A third hurrah for that effortless snug heel, feels like the bruised toe issue would be resolved. Other pros include a comfortable footbed and not too stiff nor too soft sole. Cons. One con, it's fatal and another reviewer returned their Tushars for the same reason I am going to return my pair. At the leading edge of where the tongue folds, a bump is created by the folds plus sewing. This bump rubs against my ankle bone severely enough, even with adequate hiking socks that I'm not even going to try the Zappos 30 day "Runlimited" trial. While a different shaped lower leg and foot might not have this issue, it's a deal breaker for me. Darn, darn, darn! Altra, take note! You are on to something here. A couple of tweaks and I'm a buyer!

Le sigh. I really wanted to like these boots. I have been an Altra customer for years and wear size 7 in alllllll my Altra sneakers. I ordered these in size 7 and within the first half mile of a 6-mile hike, started having hot spots on my heels. By the top they were full blisters. I then returned these and ordered them in 6.5's... same problem!! These must be cut differently from other Altras because I had hot spots turned to blisters in the 6.5's as well. The rest of the fit felt pretty good but the fit isn't right if they're causing heel blisters.

I've been wearing Altra Lone Peaks, great for toe room and bunion, but not a lot of cushioning and after 1 year, treads are worn and the fabric is tearing. I had high hopes for the Tushar boot, as a more durable version of the Lone Peak. What a disappointment. Altra took a lightweight although somewhat clunky shoe and made it super heavy and clunkier. The ankle comes up very high, uncomfortably so. And the shoe width+heavy sole make it hard to imagine feeling the trail, let alone being able to maneuver in tight spaces. And the style--normally I don't care too much, but these are just ugly. Ugh. Hopefully they get it right next time.

I hike big miles in the Adirondack high peaks so I like a shoe with good support. I also have a neuroma and require a wide toe box. I was so excited to find these. They felt great. The grip on rock slides was amazing. They seemed waterproof to me. Well, in about a month and well under 100 miles, both boots have holes where the rubber meets the fabric and the rubber is peeling on one toe already.

DO NOT BUY THIS SHOE, DO NOT BUY THIS SHOE. IT IS WAY OVERPRICED AND IT IS NOT WATERPROOF. IT IS NOT WATERPROOF! i HAD TO HIKE IN 25 DEGREE WEATHER WITH WET FEET!!!!!! I HAVE LOVED ALTRA SHOES FROM THE BEGINNG AND HAVE A CLOSET FULL. WHEN THEY CHANGED OWNERS, ALL PRODUCTS WENT DOWN HILL IN QUALITY AND THE PRICES ZOOMED OUT OF SITE. I SOOOO NEEDED A WIDE TOEBOX HIKING BOOT, I AM DONE WITH ALTRA UNLESS THEY GET BETTER QUALITY AND NEW OWNERS THAT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AND QUALITY PRODUCTS!!!!!! I HIKE 3 OR 4 TIMES A WEEK IN THE SMOKIES AND HAVE SENT TONS OF CUSTOMERS TO ALTRA, AS HIKERS ARE ALWAYS ASKING WHAT SHOES I WEAR. AND I HAVE MET THEM AGAIN ON THE TRAIL SHOWING ME THE ALTRA'S THEY PURCHASE AND HOW THEY LOVED THEM! . I WILL NOT BE SENDING HIKERS TO ALTRA COMPANY AGAIN!
