These are technically sized correctly but the much more restrictive top material really squishes your feet and makes it feel too small. This was noticeable when stationary but wasn't much of an issue when on the move. The new top gives a much more secure feel while still breathable. These would be great as running shoes but don't plan on using it as a daily 24/7 shoe. You may not notice that it is restricting your feet at first but after half an hour or longer, you'll want to take them off to let your feet spay out. This feels more like a normal shoe with zero drop rather than the large open toe box of Altra. I have fairly narrow feet also, which makes me think it would be even worse for most people. Sizing up half a size may fix this but may also cause other issues such as heel slippage. The heel in the back does go up higher. This will probably give more secure fit but it also rubs a bit more than the 1.5 did. The midsole is a little more firm, which I actually preferred. It won't have as soft on initial feel but I think it provides better comfort/support beyond the initial 15 mins. The bottom has more foam removed for areas that would bend to give it more flexibility but the rubber sole has basically no threads. It is very slippery on wet and smooth surfaces. My year olf 1.5s had better grip than these 2.0 brand new. Overall, I am disappointed with the revision. On initial try, I thought this would be my new favorite shoe as it felt much more secure than the 1.5 did. The restrictive top material on the toebox was the deal breaker for me. These no longer feel like Altras as my toes felt squished together.

Old-ish low volume runner with high arches & wide forefoot. The Escalante is just about perfect for me. This is my third pair. I like the new material in the uppers better than the open mesh of the earlier models -- sand pours in through the older mesh at the beach. If the new upper is a bit heavier for that, I can accept the trade-off. I also like the low cushion in this model because I like to feel the ground as I run. I do anticipate that the smoother tread pattern (vs. earlier model) will make it more difficult to see 'tread wear' patterns for analyzing gait symmetry, braking, and landing zones. But it is less likely to pick up mud and grit that might get tracked into the house. See photo for both tread pattern and typical grit. Always trade offs.

I've got two pairs of Altra Lone Peaks and love the fit and feel. I hoped the Escalante would be a good road option but the fit and feel don't work for me. Even at a half size larger, the toe box feels tighter than the Lone Peaks. And the material in the tongue and lacing support is very restrictive - to the point that they became uncomfortable just trying them out around the house. Thank you Zappos for your generous return policy.

Love my 1.5's ... Only tried on the 2.0's in a store... Everything about the 2.0 was as good as the 1.5,,,not really any better overall ... BUT the new bottom sole I do not like... may be great for running? ... but felt 'hard like plastic' for walking... no longer that nice soft squishy sole I personally love in the 1.5.s ... So strange I removed the insole to see if they maybe added a plastic rock plate or something... but I did not see any...

Trained in and raced half marathons in both the original escalante and esclante 1.5 without any problems. Seems like the escalante 2 not only changed their upper for a more structured fabric but the volume shrunk a good amount. Most notably, the midfoot area is very tight and you can feel the pressure on both the sides and tops of your feet. If you've always thought of the escalante line as too wide for you, this version might be the one you need.

These are great all around running shoes and my first time trying an Altra shoe. The perfect amount of cushion while still being responsive and lightweight. I'm in love with the extra roomy toe box. These are perfect for my wider feet without actually being a wide sole. I'll definitely check out more from Altra in the future.

This style was a new one for my husband but the fit and comfort of walking in them were just what he was looking for.

Love the fit, especially the toe box. They are very light, and the first 4 runs, the shoe felt great, forefoot has nice spring! Delight to run in them!

Size & Fit are true to Altra size. I wear a different size in other shoe brands. I have ran in these shoes 16 times and have 60..8 miles on them. The material of the upper shoe is very thin/light. The sole is very comfortable and feels great to land on. Like I am wearing a pair of comfortable loafers. The sole of the shoe is great - I thought it was flat when I bought it. The "foot landing" is super cool. I really love these shoes they remind me a bit of the Altra One. Except lighter. I had worn Brooks & Asics when I went on a break after a bad pair of Altra. I think I am going to purchase a pair of the Torin for winter runs.

Wow out of the box comfort. I love Altra shoes and they are now my go to. The style and toe box are what make them my favorite. I got mine in blue and they look really nice.

Unlike some other reviewers I love the firmer soles. They seem much more durable, and I hope to not destroy them completely after around 600 miles like I managed to with my previous 2 pairs of Escalante 1.5.

Lightweight, minimalist running shoe for me. I’m used to the Torins but I love these for shorter runs.

I am a USATF Masters National Champion at 1500 m Race Walk. My training level is at 50-100 km / week. The Escalante 1.0 was a perfect shoe for me; flexible for a good toe push off, level heel for landing with the front leg close to the body and wide toe box as the toes widen with the higher mileage. And a wonderful soft feel. The 1.0 drawback was rapid wear. I was buying 3 pairs at time as they wore out in the heel at about 500 km. The 2.0 is wearing well at 1000 km / pair. It is not as soft as the 1.0 and a little stiffer but the trade of with improved wear / lifetime is a good design change. I'm getting ready for my next order for 3 more pairs

Finally a running shoe that understands that humans have 5 toes and not 4!! The drop is negligible it feels refreshing, though I understand I have to work my way down to them. There's still surprising 'bounce' to the shoes though less so than my Nike Pegasus Turbo's I was running in. But at the end of the day my feet actually feel good instead of wrapped up tight post run/workout. The red is pretty sweet styling too.

I have run over 700mi on each of two pairs of the original Escalantes, and I now have 145mi on these Escalante 2. I don't understand why people have found such a negative experience with the new version. I would say that the Escalante 2 is a little stiffer in the sole, and the tongue is a little shorter. I actually prefer the stiffer sole on longer runs >10mi and steeper roads to maintain the feel throughout the run. I run on my second pair of the original Escalante for shorter runs, and switch to the Escalante 2 for longer runs. I don't have any trouble switching. I plan to buy another pair of the 2s since they are now on sale, to replace the older original version. For reference, I have run in Altra for many years, and the Escalante are my favorite for the road, and Lone Peak (2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and RSM) for trail. The only shoe I have not loved is the Kayenta. Something didn't feel right for my foot on the road, kind of like it was sliding off to the left due to the crown of the road? It improved when I put a thicker insole from an old pair of Lone Peaks, but still I only use them for really short, slow runs with my kid.

Forgive the irony of my complaint. It's more of an in observation really. Ever notice that those who feel inspired enough to take time to write a review are usually those who had a bad experience and want to complain about it rather than a true representation of the quality of the product? Just think for every bad review you read there are hundreds of people that thought "it gets the job done". Reviews attract both extremes but rarely the more populous middle ground that you know exists. Anyways, the shoes are great. Been wearing Altras since 2015 and wore the first Escalantes back when they came out in February 2017. Ahh I remember it like it was yesterday. It was Valentine's Day. Actually had a dream about trying them on days prior. And sure enough when I actually tried then on in a store that feeling. You know that feeling of a perfect shoe? They were really perfect. And it seems everyone agrees to that on here. Granted these new versions are slightly stiffer (AT FIRST) but that just makes them more responsive which means more energy return. Some people just like cushion and don't care about responsiveness but I think it's a beneficial change. I can usually get 300 miles out of these Escalantes before they lose a lot of that responsiveness but honestly they can last a lot longer than that just as casual running shoes or just casual shoes in general. I have wide feet and they're fine enough for me. True to size. The upper is definitely improved. Firmer, more integrity, less floppy than previous versions. Good shoe.

I'm really surprised at some of the negative reviews. I have ran over a thousand miles in the original escalate. I always liked that shoe. After going with the escalate 2, I am very happy with the improvements. So far these are the best pair of road running shoes I have ever used.

I've had the 1.0s and 1.5s. Was worried about the reviews of the 2.0s, but decided to give them a whirl. At first, they were really stiff and hard to get on. Exactly like the other reviews will tell you. I've put 20-30 miles in them now, and they are perfect! So responsive, so comfortable. I don't have any of the heel issues that others are talking about. The shoes also look super slick! I'll be getting another pair.

I use these shoes as my everyday go to and on the treadmill, walking. I 1st bought the Escalante 1, a year ago, and love it. I have been experiencing some pain in my left ankle, not due to the shoes, due to bad ankles. So I decided to try the 2.0. I love them. The extra support is awesome. I haven't had any pain in my ankle. I highly recommend them.

Let me say, I'm not a runner, so this perspective is coming from a walker. I love my Escalante 2's! They fixed what I thought was lacking in my 1.5's. They made the back of the shoe more firm and steady! My feet and legs feel great after my 3-5 mile walks.
