I love that these are much lighter than my Stinson's. I LOVE the traction as well!! Great construction! However, I have foot issues and am having trouble with the underside of my toe joints. My Stinson's protected and cushioned my foot better (I wish they had better traction). The shoe itself is AMAZING. I just need more cushioning!

Comfortable shoes with great traction. In comparison to the Speedgoats there is less padding and less stability.

It pretty much feels very cooshy, which is a really good thing since I do a lot of walking to work and back. I don't feel it needs the elastic on the sides of the tongue of the sneaker but I've adjusted the laces for comfort.

Ran a full size too big for me. Half size down would have been fine for everyday wear but not for trail running- tried it and couldn’t get toe grip etc. hopefully smaller size will work

fit like a glove, could use a bit more arch support, but my orthotics fit even with thicker hiking socks.

Terrific shoes. Love the color, design. Ordered them because I read that the toe box is roomier in this model. However, it is still not roomy enough for me. I had to return them and hope the company will, please, make WIDE width for this style soon.

If you run on trail this shoe is perfect. There is a good amount of tread and traction to grip the terrain. The shoes soul looks flat on the outside but as soon as you put it on you will see that there is extra thickness under the balls of your feet. Keeps you on your toes.

I have worn a couple pairs of Hokas so thought I would try a pair for trail hiking. These look nice and well made, love the tread, put as soon as I put them on I could tell these were not like other Hokas I’ve had. It almost feels like the heel is too low so my foot tilts back slightly when standing flat. Don’t like that at all. Also there seems to be a lot of space between the toe box and the top of the shoe. Like it’s too tall, which I’ve never had before. This makes the material crinkle weird when I walk. Also not as much cushion in the sole as others. All that is to say I’m sure these are great for someone, but not for me. Thanks to Zappos returning them is easy. Ordered a pair of Stinson 6’s and loved them immediately.

Gorgeous shoe, but I have to send back because they are 1/2 size too big. I did not find this problem with my last pair of Hokas

So far, I've had mixed emotions. Of course they ask you to write a review within a week or so of receiving your purchase. The EVO Mafetes are still "tall" shoes with the traditional Hoka cushioning, but don't seem like the typical soft Hoka shoe. They seem much stiffer than the EVO Speedgoat, but I feel that the Speedgoat could be a touch too soft as your feet seem to tire when wearing them for long periods of time. So I'm hopeful that these EVO Mafates will be more comfortable on longer trail runs. I was "in love" with the EVO Speedgoats initially, but that feeling waned as a bit of time went on and as I ran farther. As for the EVO Mafates, I appreciate the excellent trail lug and grip. I do like the "height" in terms of keeping you out of the slush/snow/damp ground. I really like the color too. I actually only tried these because the EVO Speedgoats are still only available in one color/model. I'm hoping that my opinion gets better with time with these! Stiff usually holds up better than soft! And, 30 days isn't enough time to test the shoes when you rotate many pairs! It's a lot of money for a pair of shoes that isn't "your main love".

I've worn Hokas for years. The best shoe ever for people with foot problems. Because shoes keep getting redesigned each season, when I need a new pair, I have to try out several different pairs AND sizes. I dread looking for new shoes!! Between both feet, I've had 3 bunion surgeries and 2 Morton's neuroma removed. My foot tends to be on the wide side. I found the Mafate to be VERY narrow and snug across the front of the shoe. The construction & fabric did 'give', but not enough for me to be able to keep the shoe. The heel fit well.

I love Hoka, they are great for all the mud here, and great hiking shoes or trail running, I need the extra cushion and they have great grip.

I love the design, support, and color, but they are a bit too big. I'm returning my size 9 pair for an 81/2.

I have been running all my 50/62/100 races in the Original Stinson. When you came out with the "2", I freaked out and bought every pair of original in my size I could find online in the US and Europe. So I have been running happy for years. I am down to my last two pair and they are up there in mileage, over 400. Have tried on a few of the models Stinson 5 recently and it was still aweful and painful. I tried the Speedgoat 3, fine for anything 20 or less and great for steep technical. The Evo Mafate 2 went 20 and felt great and seems like it will be my next Ultra shoe, unless you are nice and release the Original Stinson again.....please.

I love the trail shoes but would like another style so I tried this one. The fabric used is like most Hock shoes and is a soft fabric. If you use an orthotic or want/need your foot to not slide side to side in the shoe at all, these will not work. I hope Hoka makes shoes with a sturdier fabric as I would like other styles and be able to recommend them to patients

I recently purchased the Evo Mafate 2 for an upcoming trip to Yosemite. This is my fourth pair of Hokas (Clifton and Bondis) and they have helped tremendously with my plantar fasciitis, so I’m a big fan!!! Unfortunately, the Evo Mafate 2 is not the trail shoe I had hoped. The fit is slightly large, which didn’t bother me too much, since I wear orthotic inserts, but there was still a little too much room at the toe box. They also slipped on my back ankles, but that also didn’t bother me too much. The dealbreaker for me was the tongue, which cut into my right ankle. I had read that people experienced this with the Speedgoats, but I didn’t see this with the Evo Mafate. I tried wearing taller socks to cover the tongue, but I’m still having this issue. I’ve worn the shoes three times on short walks with the dogs and it’s very uncomfortable. I wore them 5 hours ago and still have a line across my ankle, so I can’t imagine putting in a day hike in these. Overall, they are a good looking shoe, very grippy, and comfortable with the exception of the tongue. I’m returning them!!

I chose these Mafate 2 over Mafate Speed e as the 2s were more comfortable, hugged the foot a bit better. I ran a few times in the 2s on mixed trails (the 2s are better than the Speed 3 on those areas of pavement you sometimes hit on the trails). Then I ran a 50k on a loose gravel, hilly trail. By mile 7 my feet hurt and I had to change shoes. I had a similar experience training before the race, with my feet feeling tired and pounded on by mile 5. Unfortunately, these aren't cushioned enough for me for the long haul. (because the trail wasn't too technical, I finished out the race in an old pair of Hoka Arahi 4s). For reference, my prior trail shoes were Saucony Peregrine 8, which I loved for support, traction, and comfort, but have found the toe box too narrow recently. As for traction, the Hoka Mafate 2 have done fine on sand, pine needles, gravel, mud, uphill and down - no problems!

I need shoes that help with over pronation and these felt the opposite. The toe room was great

I am a Front Liner and love my Hoka's BUT... I used the Afterpay this time.. My left shoe is "irregular" !! The tongue of shoe is shorter and does not pull up like my right one. This my 6th pair of HOKA's ..so if you do the payment plan you may receive an irregular shoe. I will never use that payment method again. Do not like crooked and lop-sided short shoe tongues

I wanted to get a few hundred miles on these before reviewing and I have 600+ on them. The good: 600 miles on a shoe! These things are durable. Some wear and tear, but living in the Colorado rockies they have crushed it in snow, ice, technical trails, uphill, downhill, you name it they are solid. Love the Vibram outsole... these are sticky in the best way! They are supportive but nimble, perfect amount of cush, and still have life left. A serious upgrade from Altras, which are great out of the box but I can't seem to get more than 100-200 miles out of a pair. The BAD: unfortunately the bad is so bad I can't order another pair. Hoka: Make a wider toebox! I'm losing both ring toenails to these shoes. The width of the toebox just doesn't make sense, they come to a point... and now my toes do, too. Ouch. One other minor con is they are annoying, squishy and loud after creek crossings until they completely dry out. Not a deal breaker, but the toe box is! The search continues...
