After running in the Challengers for awhile, I was finding they didn't have enough tread/lug height and were prone to occasional slipping in the dirt. The Evo Mafate 2 was the answer better traction, great fit for me (Speedgoat too narrow for my foot), good under-foot protection from rocks, and the right amount of cushion to keep feet happy and still feel responsive when navigating rockier trails or for speedier runs/workouts. Will buy another pair again soon!

What a great shoe! The pinging in my knees is gone! Perfect mix of cushion and responsiveness for a great ride on long runs. I do 5+ mile technical trail runs 4 to 5 times a week and these shoes rip it up every time I lace up. The heel is a little loose feeling on them, which hopefully the next version tightens up the heel fit and maybe a bit more room in the toe box. Overall, this is a great trail eater....

Incredible traction , seemingly bulletproof upper , and very comfortable . If I could change one thing it would Be to slightly soften the feel .

Although pricey, this shoe is hands down my favorite Hoka to date. All of the updates from the original turned this shoe into a keeper.

Loved the Evo Mafate but version 2 is even better: lower heel counter, improved tongue padding and lacing.

I got these shoes about a week ago and absolutely love them so far. I got them for ocr races, although I haven't actually had a race quite yet with them (next weekend is first one and I will update) So far i have tested them on grass runs, muddy trails, and through water. Really wanted to test them before the first race and they did not disappoint. They are very lightweight and the comfier shoes that I tried on for trail running. The structure and durability of the new upper feels great. And I was very happy with how they drained water as well. After fully submerging them and pulling them back out the didnt feel any heavy at all and you could see all the water immediately drain out! Cant wait to test them on the actually course but i have no doubt they will be fantastic, would definitely buy hokas again, although dont think I will have to with how durable the material seems, which is another bonus because with the higher pricetag I would expect them to last a good while

These shoes are perfect for trail running or casual wearing in an outdoor environment. I only wish they had a touch more toe drop/higher heel.

I like these shoes but I wish there was more love directly under the heel instead of the gap. The mid to forefront of the shoe is plenty and aggressive, but the heel is not so much.

I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this shoe but I love it. It is slightly less stable than the speedgoat but just as fun to run in once it gets going. Great in the mud, wet rocks but not for scrambling. Important to note that I am a 10.5 speedgoat and a 10 mafate evo. If you are between sizes like I am, its best to go with the smaller of the sizes you are able to wear.

Overall Excellent shoes. They fit well and the first week was pure bliss running in them. I've put about 100 miles of moderate trail running in and the threads, soles and laces are starting to show signs of ware. I'm still pretty stoked on them although they were very expensive.

I'm a fore/mid foot striker and these shoes a perfect for me with decent cushioning in the forefoot, they also forgive me when I'm tired or running a little sloppy downhill with great heel cushioning.

Purchased to try for a hike on the JMT. I even went up one full size and too narrow. I don't have a super wide foot. This shoe is extremely comfortable. Hoka please make a wide a version.

These shoes are almost perfect. The traction, EVO upper, and cushion are FANTASTIC. However, I have a little over 100 miles on these and the heel cups both have holes on the inside due to poor lockdown. I was fitted for a size 13, which is my usual size, but I may need a 12.5 because the lockdown is so bad. Only thing is that they may be too narrow if I size down. The lugs also show major wear and I legit only ran on road for maybe 10 miles total because I had to. Sole durability and lockdown are what knocks the shoe down for me. Other than that the shoes are awesome. I'd probably knock the price of these down by $20 too.

Great light shoe for trail running. I did find that if you need to run any short sections of pavement , the outsole is a bit sticky to the pavement .

These are my initial thoughts. I just opened the box tried on the shoe, and overall I'm impressed. The fit feels good, the length might be a shade too long but fits relatively well. The sole of the shoe is bomber! The lugs are deep. I love the mega grip Vibram... They really feel like they are going to withstand anything. That said, the only complaint I have, and why I can't give 5 stars, is the material right above the toenail seems like it's not going to take too much of a beating. I feel like they may have scrimped to shave some weight off on an area they shouldn't have. I have a pair of Speedgoat 2, and the material around the same area is ready for war. But the Speedgoat's lugs are a little less than desirable... 300 miles max before lateral heal lugs pretty much flat. So, I guess there's a trade-off. I'm just thinking if you're paying more for a shoe that should get you at least 50 to 100 miles more on the sole, the material on the upper portion that takes abuse should be adequate as well. Hopefully, I won't have to resort to shoe-goo like I did when I grew up skateboarding. I'll chime back in when I put a fair amount of miles on them. You never know until you kick some rocks around...

The fit on these shoes is great out of the box. I've haven't put many miles on them yet, but I'd be surprised if the fit worsened. After only 15 miles, the tread is very visibly wearing down. Some of the grip looks like it has 100+ miles on it already. Maybe these are not meant to be taken on gravel/sand/rock mix trails? I'm not sure what that leaves; surely not mud considering the deep holes cut out of the soles. Very disappointing. I cannot recommend unless you're strictly running on grass or you don't care if your shoes only last 100 miles.
