They’re what I expected, although the sole inserts are cheaper with less cushion than predecessors. Huge gripe are the laces—they’re garbage. The plastic tips cracked and fell off and the laces have unraveled so much they’re unusable and I have to buy more. I contacted New Balance and heard crickets.
I'd also recommend:

I had 6 pairs of 1540v2 over the last 6 years. They were fantastic for me after flat foot reconstruction due to the neutral last. I'm disappointed to see you can't buy 1540v2 anywhere in my size this year. I tried every single place I could. I ended up going with this 1540v3 and while I was told the last is the same as v2 it definitely is wider and the tongue is too short to allow you to use the last shoelace notch. I had read that complaint in the reviews before I bought these and now I see it's true. the shoe lace slips over the tongue and you can't use the last notch because of it and since the shoe is wider nothing feels like it's giving me motion control. Why can't you just engineer a good 1540v2 again and keep the darn thing available to your loyal customers? You've gone and fixed something that wasn't broken.

Overall the quality has dropped significantly. The insole and padding have lowered in quality. The sole of the shoe started to come loose after 8 days of wearing. The fabric on the inside of the shoe came unglued as well after 2 weeks. It was my favorite motion controlling active shoe and now I am going to have to find an alternative. This shoe needs to be dropped to a 70$ shoe.

I have purchased the 1540v3 several times now as it is the only shoe I have found with RollBar technology which solves a flat arch problem I've had for years. The shoe is handsome and practical and I will continue to buy them when needed. Problem is, the 1540v2 was WAY better! The V3 wears out (interior and exterior) sooner (3 months vs. 6 months, under average use), has accent strips across the top that come unglued within days, have laces that fray very easily, and are quite obviously made of cheaper materials. Twice I have complained and twice I got an auto-response on the NB refund procedures. In addition, the price has gone from just over $139 to now over $180 in a very short period of time. Conclusion: I will continue to buy the 1540v3 out of necessity, glue the pieces together when needed, buy new laces when needed, and replace them every few months. If I had any other option, I would take it. Meanwhile, my original v2's are now gardening shoes, but are intact, never came apart, and have their original laces! But if there is a v4, that turns out to be even more cheaply made with even lighter weight parts, higher price and, I can only guess, higher profit margin, I will skip it and spring for orthotics.

Within about 3 months of walking 2.5 to 4.0 miles daily, they developed holes in the toe area of both shoes.

Very disappointed. I have been wearing 1540's for years. But this new 1540 V3 is very poor. First, the shoelaces were too short to tie the shoes, that's just careless. And these shoes pinch very painfully at the front of my ankles and also poke under my ankles. I bought 11 6E, as I had been doing for years with the 1540 V2's but the V3's are a bit tighter than my V2's. Overall, the pain these shoes cause around my ankles is too much to bear. These shoes are getting returned. Hopefully New Balance scraps this design and goes back to the V2. They really messed up a good product.

I bought a his and hers pair of this shoe because it said made in USA on the site, like the 990V5. I was super disappointed to find out both were made in Vietnam.

Very disappointed. I received the shoe and it didn't look like the picture and wasn't Made in the USA. It was made in Vietnam. I sent it right back.

After wearing the 1540V3 for a couple of days, my feet are in AGONY. I have bunions, flat arches, hammertoes. But I've still managed to walk 6 miles a day in my New Balance 1540V2 and they are excellent. Perfect support, great comfort. But the V3!!!. I don't know what they did..the break in the shoe seems to be farther forward than the V2, which causes pressure on the first joint of the big toe. That might also be causing the pain on the outside of my foot. The foam in the heal seems a little higher...but shouldn't be a big deal. They feel ok for 20 minutes and then they start to hurt. In 2 days, I can't walk...The V2 never hurt. I don't know what to do as I have looked everywhere for more of the 1540 V2 and can't find them anywhere. If you do buy these shoes beware. Try to break them in gradually. But for me that wasn't enough.
I'd also recommend:
I'm at a loss. The V2 was magnificent...the V3 is horrible.

Where to start...past reviews are spot on. This version is a giant leap backwards. Since the accident and surgery, I require a shoe that fits a brace. The previous model was perfect to the point I would order 2 or 3 pairs at a time. Current 2019 brace and orthotic were built on the previous model. These only ‘fit’ with great force to get them in the shoe. The comfort is also off. The shoe lacks support for both impact and lateral movement. As for the construction and presentation: the shoe has decorative elements (for this model they are blue) that are glued on and easily fall off. The tongue is short as are the shoe laces. Returned for refund. Ordered and keeping the Brooks. New Balance loses a customer.

Size and fit were excellent. The problem is with the shoe's tongue. It is so short that there is nothing left of the tongue to grab and pull it all the way out. It stays stuck in the shoe making it impossible to wear comfortably. I ordered this because I own the 1540V3 and the tongue is available to pull up after putting your foot in.

This is the fourth pair of 1540s I owned. This version is not up the the quality and comfort of previous version. The cushioning leaves something to be desired, a pair of Dr. Scholls will help; however, this shouldn't be required of a shoe of the price. The tongue is a bit too short, also the quality of construction is less than the previous versions I've owned. I like the NB brand and will look for a different model of their running shoe.

I have a wide foot and have been wearing various New Balance for years. I have had 3 or 4 New Balance with the same number except v2, these were v3. I wear 7 1/2 by 4E. They look virtually the same as the old ones. I put them on and went for a walk as I have always done when I buy a pair of New Balance. They have always been extremely comfortable. After a long walk both the outside edges of my feet were so bruised and hurting. It took several weeks to recover. Every time I wear them the same thing happens. I end up in my old over run New Balance v2. New Balance seems t have changed the fit of the shoe. I'm out $184. I would never have known the problem by wearing them in the house first. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next.

I jog with this shoes. I have version 2 . They have a long tongue. The version 3 has a short tongue. It cuts through your ankle . I looked at the Zippos web site, lots of people complain about the short length of the tongue. I hope New Balance will come soon with a Version 4 with a longer tongue similar to Version 2. I will use my old version 2 shoes. V3 version is not a good design.

Some of the best fitting and comfortable casual sneakers I've had. Too bad New Balance has discontinued them in 11B.

This shoe was recommended for use with an ankle/foot orthotic (AFO) and brace. Of the many different shoes tried this has been the best for so far to use with my AFO.

My orthopedist recommended these (along with orthopedic inserts) to rehab a metatarsal stress fracture and plantar fascia strain. These shoes fit perfectly and required no break in period. They are definitely working to improve my foot healing and I'm buying a second pair.
