basically these are clogs with a back. I was very disappointed in the back. it was floppy. no support or hardness. I am used to shoes having a firm backing behind the heel. this was soft and floppy.

These fit like traditional Birkenstocks with a nice wide toe box and footbed.

Birkenstock Garys are very nice - I like the slip-on option. I regret that the cork footbed was too rigid for my foot. I couldn't imagine that I could wear them enough to break them in. I think this is because I have very low arches, and like some cushioning. I can't wear Birkenstock cork sandals for the same reason (but I love their EVA sandals!). I think the Gary would work for someone with normal arches. As for the size, they seemed a bit short, but I decided against trying the next size up. I am trying the Birkenstock "Bend" for a larger size: that model seems to have a more flexible footbed (?)

Overall I like the shoe. I returned the first pair because they fit big. I went down a size (frm 44 dn to 43) and they fit good, so be aware these run large. The biggest gripe I have is the white rubber soles leave marks on my wood floors! Yikes... wasn't prepared for that. In defense I don't usually wear street shoes indoors.

I have a pair of Birkinstock sandals which are so freakin' comfortable! When I saw the Gary, I thought it might be a perfect fall/winter version of the sandal. NOPE...not at all. Something went horribly amiss with the stitching along the sole. I could feel it all along the edge of the foot bed. I had such high hopes for this shoe.

I wanted to like these shoes, but just couldn’t. I have a nice case of plantar fasciitis so Birkenstocks were one of the recommended brands. Ultimately, the style of this shoe isn’t right for me. I have large feet for my height, and the shoe has a rounded toe box, so it’s easy for me to achieve the clown-shoe look here. Comfort level was just okay; I have orthotics that I use with all shoes, and they would not have fit in these. I didn’t get the feeling that over time they would get more comfortable, especially without orthotics. They aren’t bad shoes, they just aren’t for me.

Stitching running from top of shoe down along the inside arch to the sole rubs against my feet. Clunky, loud sole. Good otherwise.
