The good: the shoe is very well designed for general training, more so for lifting and CrossFit style workouts than running. They are very good for walking. The sole is flat and grips well, making it an awesome lifting, jumping, etc platform. The shoe provides good support without being overly stiff
The bad: like the others said, the coating on the toe (rope climb protection, I assume) peels off quickly. I have two pairs and it's happened to both. It has not affected the structure of the shoe, though. A more durable material like leather would be a better choice for this
Personal preference: the shoe has a goofy design and would prefer something more like the solstice xt (simple). The laces on all of my altras are too long (drag on the ground long) - I've replaced every single pair on all of my altras
Overall: this could be a fantastic staple shoe for you guys with a few tweaks. I'd continue buying them as is, though, if that says anything.

I like the style. I even like the look. The soles are what I've been looking for since my first pair of Instinct's. I have super high arches and wear an orthotic in one of my shoes. There, for me, is the issue. The fit over the top of my foot is tight on both feet. Super tight where the orthotic is. Just tight where there is no orthotic. I want to like, but I'll be sending these back. So far Zappos has been great on returns.

I have worn these doing Cross Fit 5-6 days a week and as my daily wear shoes for the last 4 months. I was worried that they would not last because of some of the other reviews. I have a 1 cm area on the right toe where the rubber is separating slightly. However it has been this way for over a month and not gotten worse. They are a bit stiff in the sole wearing in but have been great. I have run up to 2 miles in them and had no issues. I would recommend them and will probably buy another pair in the future. I just bought another pair of shoes and are making these my dedicated workout shoes.

Great HIIT training shoe. Has great stability and also very comfortable for running on the treadmill. I usually use a racing flat but they did not have the stability for lateral movements. These are pretty solid! Stiff at first but loosened up a bit after running. I would certainly recommend this for what it is intended. I would have liked to see this in a few more color combo's but it served the purpose for which I purchased them!

I am on my 3rd pair of these. The only complaint I have is the rubberized toe cracks relatively quickly over the first toe inset and also where it meets the outsole. My first pair cracked within a couple of weeks of first putting them on. I thought it was an anomaly, but my second pair did the same thing, but it took longer. I sucked it up because they are so comfortable. Secondly, these shoes also make my feet sweat considerably more. I'm not sure how wide the previous reviewers feet are, but mine are pretty wide but these fit pretty true to size. Previously I would have to either get a shoe size larger (14E New Balance) or just deal with it...not with Altra HIIT. They fit great and where I used to get a rub on my outer ridge of my foot and pinky toe disappeared with these shoes. I am a nurse and these shoes are my saving grace. Would have given it a 5 star, but the durability is lacking. Also, they look great in the casual setting. I wouldn't go running in these at long distances bc they are a little rigid for that, and I imaging it would tear up considerably quicker.

Toebox is definitely narrower than the Torins I purchased a few years back. Was going to return them but decided to pull the inserts out and they fit great now. I bought them for work and I think they're going to work great as they have a stable, full rubber sole and a fairly durable upper especially around the heel and toe. I do think the toebox should be wider, just around the metatarsals, not around the toes themselves. Other shoes I wear 7 1/2 or 8, these i bought in a 7.

Definitely an Altra fan here. I've owned multiple pairs of every version of Lone Peaks starting with the 1.5. I was really excited about this show because I needed something with a flat bottom outsole. For me the fit in an 8.5 was great. The sole is a little too stiff front to back but not terrible. The bad part comes with rubber toe cap. It started cracking and peeling after less than 6 times wearing them just around the house. Looks like a common issue after seeing other reviews. Altra, however was quick to replace and warranty at no charge. They ended sending me another pair of Lone Peak 4.5's which I graciously accepted. Looking forward to the next HIIT XT

When first putting these on, I could tell that the comfort was on point. I've been looking for more shoes with zero drop (heel to toe height) for my CrossFit workouts. I've had these for less than a month and the logo on the sides are already beginning to lose their adhesion to the shoe. They appear to be glued on. I was expecting better quality for the price, but still give them an average rating for comfort.

The HIT XT 2 has less slippage than the HIT XT 1.5. Otherwise, the XT still needs more improvement. The sole still feels too stiff front-to-back to afford good agility. Also, the height of the sole above the floor is still too high, too thick ... sort of a platform shoe effect, similar to thick-soled jogging shoes. At least that's the way I perceive these shoes. They don't feel nimble when trying to rapidly pivot or move side to side.
I will say that the HIT XT 1.5 and probably the XT 2 make good weight training shoes. The firm soles are appropriate for weight training with weight on feet and feet on the floor.
I can't say for sure about the XT 2 because I have not bought a pair yet and have not tried the XT 2 in the gym. So maybe I'm wrong.
Altra may be mistaking a mistake if Altra's shoe designers think the the Nike Metcon shoe series is the model to emulate. I think think the Metcons' soles are also too stiff to be the optimum CrossFit training shoe, at least the Metcomn 1 or 2. I have not tried the Metcon 4. I don't think that the Metcons are ideal CrossFit shoes. To repeat, the Metcons are not perfect CrossFit shoes. They are not the ideal that Altra should copy.
I currently have a pair of Torin Knit 3.5's. I like these shoes a lot. They are what I wear for CrossFit style workouts. I think the Torin 3.5 would be the best CrossFit shoe if the sole felt just a little bit firmer underfoot. Not stiffer, but firmer. What you don't want when lifting a heavier weight with feet on the floor is the sensation that the shoe soles are compressing and squishing underfoot.

Bought and wore out 2 pairs of the old HIIT shoes and they were the best shoes I've ever had. The new improved HIIT 2 broke down on the toe and don't hold a candle to the orignals. Bring it back!!!

These are dedicated workout shoes. 5-6 mornings a week I crossfit in these. I've been using these for about 3 weeks and was a little concerned about the creases turning into cracks, but figured it was a one-off issue. When I saw other reviews with the same issue it really has me concerned. I own many pairs of Altras but my last pair of road running shoes had problems and now this pair. Completely different purpose built shoe but lacking the quality that sold me on Altras in the beginning. What's the deal guys?

I like altra shoes because they are wide enough to fit my feet in, these are not, narrow throughout, short in the heel, and the toe box is tiny, they would get one star but they are stylish. Please Altra, stop making narrow shoes

The zero drop aspect of other Altra shoes has worked great for me. Wanted something for tennis. Really liked the look of black ones.
The HIIT XT felt too narrow and didn't have much cushioning. My back (compromised to being with) started playing up just being active around the house in them to try them out. Returned but hoping Altra takes feedback of others and tried to make a wide version and a more comfortable shoe for outside non-running activity.

1st pair of Altra's were the Olympus 2.5, they were awesome best shoes I've ever ran in. But I don't do much running anymore just gym work. So I got these grey & orange HIIT XT 2, an I've had them for 2 weeks. The are coming apart.. I'm 77.1kg, 175.25 cm tall, & wear a 42 in shoe size. So I'm not sure how these shoes are rapidly falling apart.

Really was excited to get these. Worked out on them maybe 10 times and the lace tether on the left shoe just snapped. So unfortunately my excitement for these can’t justify poor construction of the upper. Bummer. If you aren’t planning on working out in this workout shoe you’ll be fine. If that’s the case though, why buy them?

Bought these in November and have put around 20 miles, indoors on the treadmill and there's already a crack near the toe and along the top of the sole. Don't know if this was just a defective pair or not but they're clearly going back. On the plus side I liked the fit and sturdiness of the shoe but I did have to order 1/2 size up compared to my running shoes.

I really wanted to like these, as I own almost every other shoe Altra makes and love the brand in general. I originally bought the XT 1, which was seriously heavy, stiff, and generally uncomfortable to do any activity in, even walking.
The good: Compared to the last model, these fit more snug / narrow, keeping my foot in place during multi-directional movement. Partially due to the much improved lacing system which is easier tighten up. The sole is more flexible, it feels a bit lighter, and is overall a bit less clunky.
The bottom line: Although this model makes solid improvements, they're still so stiff and clunky that I can still barely stand to just walk around in them. I'm on board with the idea that a training shoe is not supposed to be as cushioned or flexible as a running shoe, but these feel like they'd be good for stationary weight lifting and that's about it. I'm looking for a shoe that gives a good balance of support, flexibility, and cushioning (I already like the tread design for durability and grip).
I'm really hoping the next model delivers on some of these improvements, i'll be waiting to try them out, as I'm always eager to see what Altra will come up with next.

I'm a long time Altra fan and cannot emphasize that these shoes are not made well.
After 2 different pairs, both have broken the lacing system in less than 2 hours of total wear. Insane.
I returned the first pair and thought ok it was a fluke this happen. Got my second pair through a workout and though ok good. Yesterday went to lace them up and they broke AGAIN, in the same exact areas.

I would not recommend this shoe. Toebox is cramped and rigid which means your toes are going to get destroyed. It was a nice thought but this shoe doesn't really work for people with toes.

My Altra experiment is OVER. Last year I suffered from Plantar Fasciitis in both of my feet due to over training. I scoured the internet for solutions and one of them was that Altra shoes were a game changer for people with Plantar Fasciitis. I took it easy transitioning from a 12mm drop shoe to a Zero drop shoe. This was done through walking only, then a run/walk combination, and then to running. Unfortunately I never really felt that my feet improved. All the while I really wanted the Altra's to work. I also have wide feet and the wide toe box was something I really liked. Unfortunately they were never the answer for me. I recently transitioned back to a 10mm drop shoe and my feet have improved significantly. In fact I wore an older pair of Altra's yesterday to mow the lawn for about 30 minutes. This was after wearing the new shoes for most of the day. After the 30 minutes in the Altra's I vowed to never wear them again. That pair, along with my five other pairs, made their way into the trash can. Maybe these are great shoes for some, for me it was an 18 month failed experiment! Lastly the shoes absolutely do not hold up. Their sturdiness, in shoes like the Lone Peaks and the TIMPs, diminish very quickly. I will say the sturdiness of this shoe is better than most of the Altra's. Overall I must say these are the worst shoes I have ever put on my feet.

Bought the instinct, which was great. Tried to buy again, and they replaced it with this shoe. Too long and narrow, defeated the purpose of the wide toe box. Bring back the instinct!

Well...I wrote a really nice review about these shoes a while ago, because they fit so well and work well for my cross-fit classes, but I am now seeing the same issue others are talking about--namely the material on top of the shoe above the toes is cracking open, exposing the material underneath. So....these are really nice shoes, with a VERY limited life span. Not sure I can still recommend them.

I have been an Altra fanatic for several years. I wear Altra shoes for everything, running, training, teaching, casual. However, the HiiT 2 have been an complete and utter disappointment. Three weeks of using them to teach Elementary P.E. and they are falling apart. First there was the rip in the coating above the toe after the first day of use. Now the front sole is separating because of the the bad glue. I wore the HiiT version 1 all year last year to teach in and had no problems. The HiiT 2 are a cheap update.

Many times have come back to get another reliable shoe but sold out to have to wait for new model in size. Now on roll out they are already out of several hiit sizes in preferred color. Not even for sale to public it seems before today and they are out. Need to come up with another strategy as some of your best efforts on every day shoes have been left to die and gone to a grave. Frustrating is a sublime reaction.
