Got mine around 2000. I've used it every adventure, including cave diving, trad climbing, or just going to the gym, the beach, travelling.
It's huge despite it's compact format. And besides color shading and the logo embroidery a bit scratched, it is unharmed after so much mistreat.
I'd buy another, but this one looks good for another 20yrs.

My wife has an original Wasatch backpack and for years we have both lamented not being able to buy one for me as well as an extra for her when she wears it out. More than once she has commented that she'd buy several more if only they were still made. So when the reissue showed up, we jumped on it and bough one for her, one for me, one for both kids, and one for my dad. My wife's original has stood up to two decades of heavy use from carrying heavy college textbooks (the original use) to countless trips to cities, mountains, woods, lakes, and rivers. The reissue appears to be substantially the same in terms of design and heavy duty materials and construction. Some of the things we both like are
- two side pockets that each can hold a 1 quart nalgene water bottle. For day hikes this is really helpful to be able to carry that much extra water comfortably. Having the pockets on the side keeps the hard bottle off of your spine and secure.
- heavy duty zipper. Other day packs often use flimsy zippers. These are solid.
- hip/waist strap and sternum strap help position the weight comfortably. Note that the waist/hip strap is *not* the really solid thing that you would expect on an internal frame backpack for camping treks but that isn't what this pack is targeted at.
- it is wide enough for my high school student to fit some large 3-ring binders in.
- Relatively simple design with a large main pocket lets me fit what I want instead of having to deal with lots of extra fabric and zippers that add weight and constrain me to sizes that aren't what I want.
- Heavy duty fabric. Looks as solid as the original and the original has been a rock star in terms of durability.

Have used it in college and graduate school (loaded with lots of books :)) as well as to travel with my small children (loaded it with loads of diapers :)). It's a great bag - very versatile and comfortable!

I have had this pack for 20+ years. I have been searching for a larger 2-3 day pack and even though I purchased a North Face replacement.. it cannot compare to the Wasatch. I do not know how "updated" the reissue may be.. however, the highlights of the Original:
Clamshell Opening makes packing and access aweseome
Large Zippers
Large keychain hook in front pocket.. .that is not hidden inside an inside pocket
Ice Axe loop makes a great grab handle
The zippered 2 side water bottle pockets will hold a 32 oz nalgene AND.. can be used for other items. which is THE MOST IMPORTANT feature. The problem with EVERY pack on the market is the water bottle pockets on the side are useless.
BUY THIS JACKET..

I bought this pack as I was starting my freshman year of college back in '99 and it's just starting to show it's wear. I LOVE this backpack! It's been with me on countless adventures, travels, hiking trips, plane rides, and festivals. I truly can't believe how durable this backpack is and how much I'm able to pack in it. My only wish is that the would put out different colors. If you're considering buying this pack you won't be disappointed and it will last you for at least 20 years!

My original Wasatch from '98 is *finally* starting to show some wear. Countless trips to near and far plus daily usage over the 20 years I've had it have worn but not trashed this great pack. Nice and roomy at 35L. Looks like TNF has added a laptop sleeve (what's a laptop in '98?) which is one thing I am definitely missing in my original.
Wish the side bottle holders were a bit bigger and there were a couple more places to clip carabiners to on the outside but overall I'd likely buy again if it was offered in all black or a combo of black and greys.
If you're wondering if it'd work as a high school or college pack and fit books and binders and computers, etc., I'd say "most definitely"

I feel I got this in 2001/02 and use is as my carryon or just general overnighter. Great backpack. Only drawback is the water bottle zippers come loose/don't zip up fully. Still, this is an incredibly versatile, roomy, comfy, and bulletproof (aside from side water bottle zippers).

This pack has been around the world many times since the 90's. The inner waterproof material did become sticky from years of use in humid, tropical climates and I did re-waterproof the exterior. It still sports my Peace Corps Nepal patch from 2001!

Still rocking the original from mid 1990's and love seeing the old stuff as "new again". This pack has been around the world and was used daily in college with very little wear and tear evident.

Perfect size product. Side pouches could be a little bigger and easier to open. But bag is a keeper. Def a throwback to TNF of old.
