Male. 5'9". 160lbs. Size 10. I have a neuroma in my right foot, and have been on a quest to change my entire shoe collection to wide toe-box and zero drop shoes. I wanted the best material (and prefer knit shoes because they result in much less fabric waste - better for the environment...they're also more comfortable in my opinion so it's a win win win!), something that was at least somewhat fashionable, and a durable shoe. These Altras are my first pair, and I am really impressed so far. I've only walked in them and some light jogging, but they felt fantastic right out of the box. I've gotten very sensitive with my toes being squeezed, and these have tons of space (my foot is normal width). There is just the right amount of cushion...you still know that your feet are hitting the road, but there's also a good amount of absorption. Feels like a ton of value for the price and quality. I'm looking forward to ramping up in these for my first half-marathon....and can not see myself getting a different shoe for as long as Altra is making this one. Looking forward to the upcoming marathon versions....I hope they make more with darker soles (I've never understood why running shoes would have white soles haha). Highly recommend these!

I was hesitant trying a zero drop shoe. Enter the Escalante Racer... By and far the most comfortable shoe I have run in to date. Have now purchased different models of Altra shoes and consider myself a fan boy of thier product and image as a company. Thank you Altra!

I've been running in the Escalante 1.5 and really like the shoe overall. The downside to that shoe is, as some have mentioned, is how the shoe doesn't lend much support on turns. This shoe resolves that issue. It feels a bit firmer than the Escalante 1.5, but not to the point at which it compromises comfort. I would definitely buy this shoe again. I bought the Fourth of July version of this shoe, and I love it. I really hope they come out with another Fourth of July shoe next year.

I bought this shoe to try for a marathon. After 49 miles on them, I put them to the marathon test. This is no doubt the best shoe I have run in hands down. It felt light but yet had the cushion. I continued to run in these over my Hokas and Kinvaras. I have two brand new pairs of Hokas sitting in the box still, they might not make it out. As you can see from the pics; I have about 250 miles on this shoe and it is finally starting to show some wear on the tread. The shoe has held up in all conditions, feels so natural, and I use for both long and short runs.

I got these after having the original Escalante's, and I have run about 100 miles in these. They have less cushion and more support than the original's, and for me this feels great. So far the only durability issues I've had is rubber on the bottom wearing down. The one design flaw in the 4th of July color is that the right tongue is stiffer, which might cause irritation. Other than that this is a great shoe that I would recommend as a racer or daily trainer.

As was recommended on early posts, I think this shoe runs about 1/2 size big. I love this shoe. It isn't overly cushioned but I want to feel the road. I don't like a lot of cushion.

I'm 6' 5" and was 280lbs when I got back into running with the Chicago racers; because they were on sale. I used to run in Newton's but I found that I injured my calves frequently. These Altra Escalante Racers are the real deal. I've been running with them for 3 months now; injury free. I run between 15 and 20 miles per week. I'm 267lbs now and the shoes are just perfect for a natural running style. I want a red, white, and blue 4th of July pair but 15's are sold out.

I've been wearing altra for 3 years now. I've had 6-7 different styles and these are the most amazing shoes I've ever worn. Please keep this design forever. It will be the only shoes I buy. USA USA USA

In April this year I ran a half marathon in a pair of NB's that i had been training in for a few months. During this time of the race and training I had been dealing with a knee problem that was actually causing me to wear a brace on my opposite knee due to overcompensating I assume. After my race I ordered a pair of these escalantes and tried them out. I ended up having to send back my first pair because they were a half size to big which Altra was super helpful with and had no problems doing so. Since receiving these i have logged 80 miles on the road and am super happy with them. I have not ran with a knee brace since. I have not had to. My initial knee injury is still lingering (pretty sure I need to go to the doctor) but i have not had any other soreness since switching to these shoes. They are my go to road shoe. I highly reccomend. On July 4th I ran a 10k and was more than happy with my results these shoes rock and I will be buying more zero drop shoes soon! Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

Amazing. Best running shoes ever. I had previously worn the Altra Escalante 1.5. That was good. But, for me, the Racer is even better. The toe box felt wider and overall the shoe felt less plush and cushioned (in a good way - less squidgy, better ground feel). This shoe felt more comfortable and more natural (closer to the feeling of not wearing a shoe at all). I had been looking for a shoe with a) a wide toe box; b) little or no heel drop; c) that was quite flexible; and d) that had just the right amount of cushioning - not too soft/thick but not nothing at all. This shoe was perfect for me. I had originally worn more traditional, heavily cushioned running shoes (Asics, Brooks) but developed tibialis posterior/achilles tendinosis. I switched to barefoot shoes (Vivobarefoot, Merrell) which helped with the teninosis but caused other foot pain/discomfort. The Altra Escalante Race is the perfect balance for me. Feels like running barefoot but comfortable, like I could do it all day long.
I'd also recommend:

I really like these shoes. I use these as my running shoes for my long runs. They do run a half size large compared to how Brooks and Nikes fit my feet but I knew this before I bought them based on other Altras I have bought in the past.

These Altra Footwear Escalante Racers are THE most comfortable sneakers I have owned in my ENTIRE life. I had the regular Escalantes and once I started wearing those, I realized the Zero Drop these are famous for, was a HUGE help for me as my legs ALWAYS cramp up on even short runs..even power walking. Enter Zero Drop any pain I had with regular sneakers just don't happen anymore with my Escalantes..and even better with this racer mode. This Racer is even more comfortable and light than the regular Escalantes. It almost feels like you are not wearing anything on your feet!. Don't know what to say but I am blown away by these sneakers My only little complaint?...I find they are not the easiest sneakers to actually put on. They are SO soft and thin I find it takes a bit longer to get them on, BUT they are so amazing that small little struggle is forgotten instantly. If you like zero drop or just want an amazing sneaker THESE are off the hook AMAZING. Also I do like that Altra has their classic wide toe box but unlike the regular Escalantes, these racers have just a little less of a wide frog lol weird look at the front of the sneakers, yet still TONS of room for your toes..just LOOKS better..less frog like. :)

Awesome version of the Escalante. I love the more breathable design and firm cushion. I wear them for and distance race and my daily trainers. Product pictures don't do justice.

Just like all of their shoes, my wide foot fits these very well. On this model, I love the mesh for breathability in warmer months.

Not a runner but I love the extra room in the toe box that Altra shoes have and I wear them all the time. I use these as a casual shoe and sometimes to work out. Super comfortable and stylish too. I like them so much that I bought a pair in black.

Despite the racer name, this is a great do-it-all shoe for me! pros -much improved fit and foothold over the original Escalante - just right degree of softness and flexibility -weight -grip cons -different from original Escalante, the tongue is not attached and can slip around when putting the shoe on (holds tight once in place) neutral -knit is very open and breathable in the toe area; limits versatility in cold weather and on dusty/dirt roads Bottom line: close to perfect shoe for me. Definitely also try the racer version before buying the Original Escalante.

So glad to have found these! I've been trying for years, gone through all of the wides, 2Es, 4Es for every major brand. These shoes have a wide enough toe box without making the heel extra wide. I'm 6', 185 lbs, moderate to high arches, 1E-2E forefoot. After hitting my 40's, started getting recurring plantar fasciiitis, the occasional in-grown toenail. I just wear for walking and normal every day use. I can fit a variety of inserts too without compromising the toebox.

I have been running with Altra Escalante running shoes for several years and the Escalante Racers are fantastic. Lighter, cooler and very comfortable for mid-long distance. I purchased two pairs to rotate and did not over spend for such a great pair of shoes.

This shoe fit well; right out of the box I did a 9 mile jog at half-marathon pace and my feet felt amazing. The laces are a great material that flexes well. The toe-box, as others have pointed out already, is wide to let your toes naturally splay. The shape of the shoe is really nice and unlike any other brands I've owned recently (Most recently:Brooks, Nike, Asics). The contour is such that it feels the natural curve of your foot. I had already been running in zero drop shoes, so this shoe wasn't a change for me in heel to toe drop. I like the cushioning and outer design better than the inov8s I had a few years back. They're stylish to wear around. They're very breathable, perfect for long runs; my feet never overheat. If you're looking for a flat, light running shoe then this is the shoe for you.

I used to run in Asics and Brooks Running Shoes, but was looking for a neutral drop running shoe. The Altra Escalante Racer, fit and ran great, so they are my new go to running shoe.

Light, springy and feely. This shoe is FAST. Love me the escalante 1.5, but this shoe is MUCH more my style. Just enough structure in the upper to feel 100% confident throughout an entire tun, while remaining comfortable.
