I really like how light the fabric is. Definitely great for the heat.

These are the only Quiksilver shorts I have found in recent years that seem to fit true to style (based on jeans and how they sit on the waist and through the leg). I especially love the amphibious design as they are lightweight and quick drying. I just wear them as regular walking shorts, although they can be used as swim shorts too, and they are perfect for the dry heat of Northern CA. Be aware that other styles of the Union line from Quiksilver do not fit similarly. The New Everyday Union stretch shorts are very slim fit and my size did not fit at all in the shorts. On the other hand, the Everyday Union (yes this is a different short than the 'new' everyday union) fits more similarly to these shorts, although I prefer the light amphibious design. I have purchased these shorts in blue, black, and khaki and love them. I am 5'7", 185lbs and the size 33 fits great and I can wear it without a belt. It would be awesome if they offered this short in a 7" or 8" inseam for us shorter guys, but these hit right at the top of my knee, don't flare out too much toward the knee (like the everyday union stretch, which gives a bit of the wide base trapezoid look that is generally unflattering in shorts), and don't restrict my movement (I have fairly large thighs). Would highly recommend.
