I've used this bag on three overseas trips and love being able to throw this on my shoulders and just GO. I've travelled for a month in Australia, three weeks in Europe and two weeks in Iceland using just this pack and a small day pack (doing laundry) and love the space, the pockets, the detachable straps and handles all over. However, it's too big to be a carry on on several airlines so check before you book. It might fit fine in the overhead bin but not in the airlines' carry-on measurement tester. At 5'6" it is a little big on me but once the waist strap is properly tightened it still works and is comfortable to carry/wear for a couple hours.

Great pack in terms of function. The belt could use better padding. The grey is not grey, but a dingy green. The red screams attention, which is hardly what a mature, intelligent traveler wants while in a foreign place. The teal would better appeal to a junior high girl than an adult. Osprey, please consider that travelers want an understated but handsome and classy look, and rethink the palette you offer.

I just purchased this bag for air travel so I wouldn't need a backpack and a roller suitcase. The bag itself is great! The design is well though out and has great quality just like any other Osprey pack. The only issue I have is there were no local retailers selling this product so I had to buy online without actually seeing the pack. If I had seen the Castle Grey color in person I would have opted for black; the grey is light green and the pictures online make it seem to be grey. If Osprey offered to exchange for a different color I would exchange it for a black bag. It isn't a bad color but in my opinion Osprey needs to update the color description on the website to something more accurate.

Looks like it will work well for stuffing in the overhead bin despite its size. I plan on traveling more in places where I don't wont to check.
The company indicates that a Daylite day pack will attach on the cord loops. My biggest question is will the Daylite Plus + attach? And does anyone have feedback on this option?

great pack.
used it for trips from iad to mnl via Tokyo and Seoul. had to weigh it but no questions when carrying it as a hand carry pack on the flight.
also used the same pack for travel jfk-gva-bcn-gva-ewr. looks low key (imo) and is quite durable!

This backpack has been through a lot with me. I bought it for my 3 month trip to New Zealand, Thailand, and Indonesia 2 years ago, and it was the perfect piece of luggage: perfect size, worn as a backpack but opens like a suitcase. Since that trip, I've taken it everywhere, for short weekend trips or longer week-long ones to wherever. It's always been what I need.
The one issue I've had is that, by the end of that first 3 month trip, the barrier between the main compartment and the middle compartment started to rip. It hasn't gotten any worse since, but it's not ideal. The zippers are also starting to get more difficult to pull, but that may be because cactus liquor got spilled all over it in cargo recently.

This bag is nearly perfect but has one serious drawback... there is no option to have a front-haning daypack like the Farpoint 55. The Farpoint 55 is too big to cary on with most airlines so I usually take the Porter 46... but the lack of a front hanging daypack is a real problem.
Most of my trips are a month or more and it would be really nice to have a daypack on the front for access to things while carrying the whole bag and for the added security. Plus when using a bus, I want to be bale to keep the daypack with me and put the main bag on top of the bus (or underneath in more developed countries).

Osprey, this is probably the best travel pack on the market, at least in terms of being maximum legal carry-on size, holding a ton of gear, and weighing very little. Do you want to know what would make it perfect? Really?? You do?? Cool! A Zip-off daypack option like the Farpoint 55. I would buy THAT pack, but the dimensions (even of the small size) might mean some airlines make me check it, which costs me money and time. PLEASE either redesign the Porter 46 pack to make attaching a smaller daypack much easier, OR change the dimensions of the Farpoint 55 to be more strictly airline compliant. THEN you will have a happy, loud customer for life.

All that you see in the video is accurate. The back has great organization space, durable, it fits in an overhead bin, it secures the laptop with enough protection.
However, the only negative is how uncomfortable the should straps are. It is painful when carrying heavy loads. I travel often and I stopped using it due to the issue.

Lots of good pockets and organizing options. But the zippers would catch and seemed not very well made but the actual back pack seemed to be made well. I sent it back because of the zippers.

Let me start by saying that the functionality of the bag is great - the pockets, design, etc. However, the color "castle grey" on the website is completely misleading. This color is an olive green, NOT grey!! I wanted to love the bag but am not happy with the color. I would love to exchange it for the black but Osprey will not waive the $12 return fee for this bag for me to exchange, so looks like I might be stuck with it.

Side handle and d rings for straps are too far back that when you use then too carry its awkward. The bag tilts in an awkward angle that hits your leg annoyingly. Overall great bag. Returning. Waiting for the redesign. Thanks osprey :)

There is know doubt that the overall quality and organization is top notch as you would expect from an osprey product, but the comfort seriously lacks for me. No! I did not overpack. After wearing it just for ten minutes, I couldn't wait to take it off! My shoulders and chest where in pain and the hip belt didn't help the cause. The problem may be that I'm a male that weighs 180 lbs with smaller shoulders and a narrower sternum than most. A lot of people love this pack so maybe if your a little broader in the shoulders then this might be the pack for you. Unfortunately that person isn't me!

While this is a good quality product (e.g. durable), it did not hold up to the Osprey name. I traveled for a month in Europe 2 years ago with this pack and it has been left hanging in my closet since then. While it is indeed very roomy and aesthetically pleasing, this pack has very little back support and carrying it for anything more than an hour would leave me in a state of constant pain throughout the day. The pack is very stiff and flat in structure along the back. This means that it did not mold to the curvature of my back and the weight of the pack was therefore very poorly distributed with more weight on my shoulders, less on my hips. I'm 5'3", 125lbs and this bag did not fit me well. At the time it was purchased, I was a newbie in backpacking as well as pressed for time (I was leaving on my trip 2 days later) so I went with the first thing I found. Pretty disappointing.

Bought the product because it was the largest volume carry-on which Osprey offered. Am a great fan of Osprey and have 2 other Osprey packs that are very comfortable to use. Unfortunately this missed the mark when it came to comfort. The pack bulged outward into my back and was extremely uncomfortable on the back, even when not full.
The pack does have great capacity but if it isn't comfortable to carry, seems pointless.
Material and build quality are great, as you would expect from Osprey.

Hay, I just bought the bag yesterday.
I'm 216lbs / 98kg weight
71 inch / 180 cm tall
I entered my stuffs of about 10 - 11 kg, including shoes, small bag, shirts, and jacket
but why I feel sick and pain at my shoulder?
It doesn't feel comfortable at all for me.
I'm really tired walking just about 2km.
Then I decided to strapping the bag and put it into baggage.
I'm a big guy and I think bring porter 46 with 10/11 kg stuff is possible for me,
But I really can't handle the bag, my shoulder feel pain.
are the Porter 46 really for tall people like me?
What is the maximum weight recommendation for Porter 46?

Bag is listed as carry on size of 22 x 14 x 9. But actual size is 23 x 15 x 11. Bag is too tall and wide. 22 x 14 x 9 is Carry on size for delta, American, United, jet blue, Cathy Pacific, Aeromexico, Air Asia, Bangkok Air, China Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Qantas, and Alligent Airlines.
Bag is 1 inch to tall and 1 inch to wide. If you are asked to put luggage in luggage sizer like my self who has been asked by airline staff; this bag will need to be checked with an extra cost.

Shoulder strap snapped on the way out the door for a one month trip. Missed my flight. This is not a backpack that can carry any load. Rethink if you're planning to use this for a long trip.
