These shoes/boots are still a bit new for me, so I still have under a hundred miles on them. I work in a hospital and I'm on my feet all day so I bought these for work for better longevity and protection than tennis shoes, and they look great to wear around town as well. So far they are great. Very comfortable and the waterproofing does its job in the rain. The fit is accurate, arch support is holding up, and I am very satisfied with them. I am only giving four stars for now since I have not tested the longevity and I cannot give a trail review since I use a different pair for hiking. However they have great ankle support and feel very capable for rough terrain, I just like the look of them too much to beat them up.

Love everything about this shoe. Except the small piece of rubber overlay near the toe to keep these waterproof . Came apart the first day I wore them. I still love them and will buy the same shoe again. Excellent fit and grip.

Good shoe. Nothing spectacular and a bit overpriced, but appears to be constructed well.

This is my second pair of Merrell footwear. My first pair was also a hiking shoe and I wore those until they had holes. What I like about this new pair is that the mid-rise covers the ankle bone. On my old pair, the rise came to just below the ankle bone. So the extra protection and support this new pair provides is a welcome feature. I also like that the boot doesn't restrict ankle mobility. The support of the foot bed is also awesome. I don't care for the memory foam cushioning that other brands are implementing into their products. I like the firm support of this shoe. The vibram sole provides plenty of traction on slippery or wet surfaces. Even after wearing the shoes for a week +, the shoe hasn't fully broken in. The materials are high quality so it might be a few years before I wear this new pair out.

Pros:
-These boots are more similar to running shoes than your traditional hiking boot. They are quite light and there is no "break in period"
-These boots are very comfortable and are an absolute delight to walk in.
-They have moulded insoles that help to support the arch of your foot, this put more of your weight on the outside of your feet which prevents blisters from forming on you toes.
-The toe box is roomy, and my toes do not ram into boots when going downhill.
-My feet don't heat up in them as much, but I would not call them breathable.
-The boot conforms well around my heels, preventing them from rubbing against the boot.
-The leather that the boot is made of is of a decent thickness (1.5-2mm)
-The Toe guard material extends down the sides of the boot. This should increase the durability of this boot, as a lot a boots fail where the leather meets the outsole.
-The Vibram outsole is very grippy.
-The way the outsole curves up and around the arch opf the foot and heel is perfect for providing traction when scaling over whatever object may be in your way. I think that Merrell should 100% stick with this vibram outsole and not change it in anyway.
Cons
-The laces are thin and seem to be made of cheap cotton. They do not match the quality the rest of the boot is made to.
-This boot is NOT Waterproof. The """waterproof""" lining is only water resistant. Under heavy rain or spending some time crossing streams, you will notice that water will start to leak in through the tongue, which is made of a mesh material. The Tongue of the shoe does seem come with a water repellent coating, but after a few hikes it will wear off and the tongue of the shoe will act as a sponge, drawing more water into your boot.
Improvements:
-The "Cloudy" colour scheme that is available on the Annex shoe should also be available on this Annex boot. I would think the tan/brown colour scheme would sell well with the Military/Tactical crowd.
-Replace the laces.
-The waterproofing liner in this boot should be replaced with Gore-Tex or an equivalent quality liner. From what I know the previous Annex boot did use a Gore-Tex lining, so what is up with this downgrade Merrell?
- The current material on the tongue of the boot is breathable, but unfortunately allows water ingress. The solution is to replace it with a material which has a tighter weaver. I would suggest replacing it with the canvas material that is already found on the back and sides of the boots. I think people would prefer to have better waterproofing and sacrifice and little breatheablitly than the other way around.

I did a 7 mile hike yesterday for my first hike in em. The rubbery bottom of the boot made in were I was more hesitant from slipping on the rocks than before with my merrel hiking shoes. The heels on the boot are to tight and the toes on the boot.

Walls of shoes were made with some kind of plastic material. It started cracking bad after 5 months. Shoe really starts braking apart at that point but it was comfortable until it broke apart.

I purchased the clay boots about a year ago. These have been my go to footwear since then. I wear a size 9 and they feel true to size. They are very comfortable, waterproofing works as advertised and they look great with jeans or khakis. I have sweaty feet and these boots don't feel too hot like other waterproof shoes I've worn.
Now the bad... The rubber around the toe that wraps around the side has cracked and opened up on my left boot. On right, the rubber has separated from the sole.
I love the look, comfort, and fit, so it's disappointing that they aren't holding up at a year of constant use (3-5 days a week). The sole has A LOT of life left, but I don't think the rest of the boot will hold up... I'll keep wearing them to see how they do and hopefully they don't blow out.

I've been wearing these boots for about two weeks now. The fit nicely and are comfortable. However, during the first couple of days of wear, one of them began clicking when I walk, it was annoying. Then the other began to squeak, now they both squeak, audibly. I'll continue to wear them and hope the problem works itself out but this points to some flaw in the manufacturing process. I will think twice before making another Merrell purchase.

I've taken on a job with the county parks and rec department, working outdoors in the ever changing environment of the east coast. I have always sworn by Merrell, I have the Low Trak and enjoy those but needed to have ankle support for my new job. After only three weeks on the job and only owning the Mid for a month, the sole has started to separate. The waterproof aspect is gone, but still a very comfortable shoe.

Shoe seemed very narrow across the balls of my feet and in my arches... and it seemed to point my toes upward; just felt awkward... and the tongue had side gaps that seemed too low and mesh that didn't really lay/fold down flat when you snugged down the laces... too bad... I liked the look of the shoe.,,

Took about a week to break them in because top of boot was rubbing against my skin then the top right foot inner hook broke off so I have now to tie the top around the boot now. Kind of disappointing!

Speed Hook on ankle of boot fell off after only a few weeks of regular use. Unacceptable. Also not 100% waterproof. In light rain feet were dry, but I would not recommend for rainy bike rides, hiking, etc. Color of SODALITE is also WAY off. In reality they are nowhere near as vibrantly blue as the photo. Bummer.
On the other hand they were super comfortable, light, flexible. Merrell customer service was also helpful in a replacement. I am going to try the Annex Trak LOW and skip the ankle support only because that model has no speed hooks.

Very comfortable, flexible boot. Not waterproof thought. That soft comfortable tongue is like a sponge when it comes near water.

I swear by Merrell and have for over 14 years... up until the last year or two. When I saw these boots, I almost dropped out of my seat as to how awesome they were. I had a similar boot in a different color and wanted a brown one. Got them, loved them, super comfortable. I ve had them for less than a year and wear them about 2-3 days a week doing normal City walking and occasional camping.
I went to put them on today and saw a string hanging off and after further inspection saw both outward sides of the boots were busted open - while traveling with no other pair of shoes. I ve had this with another Merrell shoe recently. These must have been my 12/13th pair of Merrells and I am astounded how poor the quality is becoming. I ve never had this happen before on any other shoes....
They're still comfortable but no longer water proof...
Merrell - we ve had such a long relationship! How do we get back on the right path?

I have a good firs impression on this boot. I bought for my mid season dog walk. It fit well and the sole has a good ground grip. But ... is not even a lawn dew proof ! Just walk in the grass it wet my sock and made me feel uncomfortable and disappointed . So x me no more mid waterproof or select "dry". From now on only solid water proof or Gore Tex

Had these boots about 2 months. The comfort is great, but one of the quick laces just fell off one day when wearing them. They also leave my feet black in wet conditions, from the leather dye. And finally they are not waterproof. Have left my feet wet several times.

Merrell describes this boot as waterproof. I purchased this boot, anticipating walking in the rain. I returned from my walk this morning, (on pavement, no big puddles) with wet socks and the insoles were wet, too. Very disappointing.

I bought this mid hiker for daily casual use in early February and by mid June it had split at the sole. These boots are very comfortable and lightweight making them a perfect choice for daily use, and personally I find them much more stylish than other hiking boots. I would use them maybe 3 or 4 days a week. I used them only twice on local trails and only when dry as I didn't want to get them dirty. I have other boots dedicated for wet weather and muddy trails. I have to say I was really disappointed that these boots didn't hold up as I have always felt Merrell was a quality brand that knew how to make footwear that could withstand trails, nevermind daily casual use. I thought maybe these were a bad batch, but if you look at other reviews you will see many purchasers who have had the same experience with the sole separation. I notice a small amount of water ingress at the sole and two days later there was a 4" split. They fell apart quickly and with hardly any wear on the Vibram sole. I hope Merrell will fix this problem. They built their brand on making hiking boots that outlasted others.

I have been hunting for a pair of boots with a lower heel that are water resistant for a while. I thought I found the answer and ordered these. The first pair was too big so I sent them back. The second pair showed up and looks like I got sent a pair that didn't meet quality control. The sole is separated from the bottom of the shoe and the edge of the rubber is peeling. STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!! I am unbelievably disappointed with Merrell on this one. This boot looks ten times better than any of the out dated old stuff you guys sell but it's built ten times worse. Very unfortunate. I can't say I'll be ordering another pair. Even if I wanted to they're sold out of sizing.

Unfortunately, the shoe we received had obviously been worn before. The bottom of the shoe had dirt on it and the seams appeared broken in like the shoe had been worn several times.

I really liked the look of these shoes and thought it was one of Merrell's better designs-especially the prior years model. Unfortunately they have been a disappointment because the tongue of the shoe isn't padded enough or wide enough. The result is that the laces cut into where my shin meets the foot even when I have almost no pressure on the laces. It has a tourniquet effect that has left me bruised and unable to lace the shoe all the way up or unable to wear the shoe at all. Left me very disappointed for the price and obvious lack of quality testing.

Well, I guess as other reviewers have said, all good things must come to an end. I too have sworn by this brand, and have even raved about it to others. The last couple years the company has clearly cut corners and costs. There shoes are now extremely cheaply made. Why do companies ALWAYS do this? It usually ends up in a decline of sales and a loss of many customers. You've just lost another. Goodbye Merrell.

I bought these in the spring time as a pair of lightweight hikers for day trips and early season elk hunting. I stopped wearing them by the start of summer. The boots were not waterproof from the start and the rubber toe guard began tearing on the third hike out. This all happened while hiking on well maintained trails. I can't imagine taking them off trail or into the Sawtooths. I'm afraid I'd have a blow out and be taping them up just to make it out. I will say the boots are fairly comfortable and are a great fit if you have a narrow foot like myself. Overall though the boots are poor quality and not worth the price. Great if you want a decent looking boot to wear around the city, unreliable for hiking on the trails.
