You only need minimal mid and baselayers while wearing the McMurdo. If I knew how warm a goose down parka was, I would have invested in one long ago, very happy. This jacket makes me look forward to Winnipeg winters now.

I grew up and still live in New York. With our insanely quickly changing climate, this coat is the best one I've ever had. It's stylish and doesn't look dumb or puffy like cheap childish brands. It's extremely warm to the point that I could sweat even while running in the cold. It's waterproof and windproof to battle against the New York rainstorms. It dries quickly. The fur on the hood is very nice, and there's a mask in the hood that if necessary can slip over the face to protect against winds that can dry your skin. The coat fits just right for me, and it's worth the money.

Bought this jacket to deal with those very cold days when the temps drop and the wind blows. This parka easily blocks the wind, seems relatively water resistant and insulates well. Hood and collar help to further protect from the elements, hood has a face warmer loop that is convenient to use especially when facing into the wind. The parka is well made, zippers were aligned and worked properly and the only thing I found was the front flap snaps were a little stiff and hard to use but seem to be improving with time and use.

Just received it and after checking it out I was impressed. I was a bit iffy about spending this amount on a winter jacket but after I received it I was relieved. Well worth the cost. Put it on and went out in 20 degree weather with a 20+ wind for over an hour and it was great. Couldn't feel the wind or the cold at all. I especially like the built-in gaiter in the hood. That will come in handy. I also like the full length flap over the zipper which can be fastened with a snap, not velcro which always seems to get stuck to itself while putting on or taking off. This should be an excellent winter coat for a long time.

I have been looking since last year to find the right jacket and believe that this McMurdo coat is the right one to replace my old Eddie Bauer. I bought several other brands only to return them because of the fit. My old coat is an old Eddie Bauer and is a Large size that fit me right from the first day I bought it. The McMurdao fits me perfectly. Everything I have tried on, including the North Face was too small in a Large and had to go up to the extra large to get the right fit. I am 5'9" and weigh 174 lbs. The only reason, I think, that I need the XL is my 45" chest plus what used to fit in a large years ago is today an extra large. Im no expert but this McMurdo has the feel of quality in its material and fit.

I recently moved from Arizona to Wisconsin. When I wear this parka, I feel as if I'm wearing the warmth of the desert wrapped inside a puffy, windproof cloud. As a bonus, I also look like Han Solo in "Empire Strikes Back" when he's on Hoth.

I just received this item. I haven't actually had the chance to wear it out yet it but trying it on it feels comfortable. Weather in Atlanta is only 30-50F at the moment so when it really gets low I'll get the chance to use it. Only thing I'm worried about is some of the reviews about quality so I feel like I have to handle with extreme care so I don't run into the zipper, etc problems

5' 6" ~155 lbs. Size S (fits snugly but comfortably) - I plan to ski in it on cold days. Haven't worn it in really cold weather yet - it's super warm near 32 F. Looks great. Versatile hood (removable). Doesn't have a "powder cuff" but the size I got and the length (~mid thigh) won't allow much wind to blow up around the hips. It's supposed to be waterproof but I doubt it will rain at the temperatures I'm likely to be wearing this. If it's like my other The North Face clothes, it is well made and will hold up well.
