Living in northern New England I always try to find winter wear that is comfortable, warm, not incredibly expensive, and if it looks good, that's a bonus. Thankfully, this jacket covers it all. I've worn this jacket a few times, as my outer shell while shoveling the driveway, and as a mid layer when walking on the beach. This jacket held up great with shoveling, and I was neither too hot or even a bit chilly. The snow that landed on my jacket melted and beaded off, I haven't tried it in rainy conditions but the water repellant material holds up great in the snow. The reason I wore an extra shell on the beach was for the added windproofing. I ended up being perfectly comfortable with this as my mid layer, and think if I hadn't added the extra shell it may have been a bit chilly. The other reason I added the shell was because I got the hoodless version of this jacket, which now thinking about how I would personally use this I may have gone with the hooded one. Overall, the jacket fits great, I'm 5'9" and 145 lbs and enjoy a slimmer fit, and not too baggy of clothing, and the small was a perfect fit. My arms fit perfectly, and plenty of room for a baselayer or 2 underneath if needed. Its actually a little looser than I thought it might be, I've bought other smalls from TNF that fit a bit tighter, but this is an absolutely perfect fit for me and I love the extra bit of space in there, it doesn't feel constricting at all and I have perfect range of motion.

I am a licensed tour guide in Israel and the higher elevations here can get surprisingly cold in the winter. Two years ago, I visited the North Face outlet in Jerusalem after a freezing and rainy 12 hour tour day, all of which was spent outside in the elements. The salesperson tried to convince me to purchase this Thermo Ball jacket. I replied with a scoff that this is likely an over-billed fad that will pass, like all other claims to have discovered a viable alternative to down. Instead, I went a few stores further and bought a 650 fill-down jacket from North Face's chief rival, which also had an outlet in the same mall. Well, just days before my last tour--nearly two years to the day of that last visit to North Face--I happened to visit that same North Face outlet, which was offering a store-wide 35% discount. When I saw the Thermo Ball jacket on sale, I again scoffed at the notion of "synthetic down." But after reading several reviews on my phone while at the store, and seeing the sale price was within my reach, I decided to purchase it. I'm so glad that I did! I just put it through its paces over the past eight days, most of which were cold and rainy with temperatures in the 40s. It sufficed as my only jacket for most of the tour, except on a day or two that were in the 30s, during which time I used it as a middling layer under a 650 fill-down jacket. My American tourists, who underestimated how cold it could get in Israel, were shivering, while I was always comfortably warm and cozy...ready to teach for hours on end, if only they were willing (they weren't). The lesson learned: never become so cynical so as to dismiss all synthetics! I have been converted. This coat, because it is slim-fitted, can be used as a layer under another jacket or by itself. As others have noted, the sleeves are surprisingly snug, but still able to comfortably accommodate a sweater underneath. I plan to layer with it in Finland next week!

Very pleased with this my first NorthFace jacket. So light, so warm and looks great. I look forward to putting it on. Hadn't planned on a hood but love having it for the rain. All in all I'm very happy with the purchase.

Everyday use. Bit afraid to wear in hiking as I don't want snags to rip the coat, so can;t verify durability, but love the look and warmth.

I am 6' 4" at 200 lbs and this jacket is perfect for me. The sleeves feel snug and just yesterday I was wearing a sweater and thought the sleeves would be too tight wearing the jacket over the sweater and I was surprised that the jacket still fitted perfectly over the sweater.

Nice jacket and lightweight but keeps you warm. Camo print a little more olive than picture would indicate.

I bought this jacket for my son who is a highschool freshman. I learned from my previous purchase of waterproof jacket for him that I had no dought about a quality of Northface products. Since my son doesn't like anything bulky to wear, this jacket is just perfect for him! He loves everything about this jacket: the quality, the slim fit style, the color (navy with silver logos), the packable feature, and the clinch bottom feature. He looks stylish and is proud to wear it to school, church, and business casual occasion! I am very happy with the purchase!

My husband purchased the men's XL slim-fit for me because the women's XL are not roomy enough for my body size. The women's sizes (even the loose-fit) are not roomy enough when I zip the jacket. A friend suggested I try the men's sizes in the "slim" fit, and I did. Perfect! I did have the sleeves altered because they were too long. I will continue to purchase the men's slim-fit for myself. Woo-hoo!
