As soon as I seen these I pulled the trigger no questions asked I have been waiting for Altra to put out a shoe with style, some of their shoes are over the top or aggressive looking, these are way more casual and look awesome, I really don't like the Nike narrow shoes but I cant wrap my head around spend the same amount on a shoe that offers so much less... Personally this will be my go-to shoe for a long time, these and the lone peaks. These are great for casual but serves at my gym shoe, I can now reserve the extra miles on my lone peaks for the outdoors!

I've been a big fan of Altra's for a few years now. My faves have been the One 2.5 model, which I ran with for 5Ks all the way to the Marine Corps Marathon. Wonderful shoes.
But yesterday I slipped on my brand-new Escalante's. WOW. I feel a pop I didn't feel with the One's but still feel connected to the ground. I don't know how they did that, but bravo Altra! They're heavier (8 ounces or so) than the One's but still plenty light enough for me.
Another plus: the new knit upper is very comfortable. I definitely prefer it over the more traditional upper of the One's.
Love these new Escalante's!

I was anxious for these to arrive. When they finally did later in the day I quickly pulled them on and headed out for a 5 mile run night run. I was amazed! I have had trouble with Altra being a sloppy fit for my narrow feet. I've ran in every model you make and I've always had to crank down on the laces to try to keep them from sliding around excessively...along with being jarring on downhills (Instinct), flat (One), squeaky when wet (Torin), and sluggish (Paradigm). The Escalante fit perfectly. Not a single initial issue. It was like I was wearing nothing on my feet. Love the comfortable knit upper. They were light, fast and the cushioning was fantastic without having the "platform shoe" stack height. I'm floored by the new EGO midsole. I can see myself training and racing in the Escalante exclusively. I'm hoping the durability will be as phenomenal as the ride. And they are by far Altra's sharpest looking shoe!

I've always liked my Altras, multiple models, but always felt they came up short when securing my heel. This new upper has fixed that. My feet feel the same left-to right, and my heel feels locked in without using an alternative lacing method.
The fit and the looks are enough of an improvement on their own, but the new Ego compound is amazing- just as advertised! I like being cushioned, but don't like feeling bogged down in slow, smooshy, foam. This stuff is soft, comfortable, and responsive. Hands down, their best road show yet.

These are my new go-to shoes for speedwork and race day (marathon). The fit is much more secure around the foot than with the One 2.5, there is less excess material, it feels more durable but still super light, and the sole construction allows me to have a much more consistent foot strike. Excelente!

These shoes are awesome, the knit upper provides a very comfortable fit along with a nice wide toebox. The knit upper also makes the shoes look very nice. These shoes are some of the best looking Altra's yet.

I have tried to love Altra shoes for years now.
I have always loved the zero drop and the foot-shaped toe box.
But, I always was disappointed with the upper and overall fit of all the models I tried.
Well, it turns out the Escalante is PERFECT for my feet.
That new upper is actually on par with the competition!
And the new Ego material is remarkable. Although I suspect some people will find it to be too soft maybe.
This is the best Altra I have owned to date and I have tried about 6 different models.
It's a joy to run in.

The knit upper is super comfortable. Once you put them on, you'll forget they are there. The new Altra ego cushioning feels great. It's soft but feels fast and stable. You can really bomb the downhills in these. The shoe is light and responsive enough for running fast 5k's yet plenty of soft comfortable cushioning for racking on the miles. Once you start running in these, you'll not want to stop. I really liked the Altra One 2.5's but these feel even better. The one's were soft too, like running on a cloud, but the Escalante's feel more stable and springy. Even when you're trying to run slow, you'll just want to go faster and faster in these shoes. Also, because of the knitted upper, this shoes look great wearing them casually too.

So I went looking for a new pair of running shoes to help alleviate knee pain I've been experiencing with my old pair. Looking for a different brand, I was shown these to try on. Well, right from the start I was impressed with the build and weight of the Escalante. Simple construct, flexible upper, no nonsense design caught my attention. Once on my feet and after a few short sprints, wow...fantastic feel in the toe box, superior cushioning even though they're listed as a "moderate cushion", it's like running on air. The response and rebound feel light and true to the running surface. I mostly run for training and fitness so it's important for me to be able to run on consecutive days. Being in my fifties, other "big name" off the shelf shoes weren't cutting it even with customized insoles. Very excited to put these to the test and finally experience running without 2 days of pain following. The sales staff was jealous that I was the first pair sold in the shop, but they were excited too. High quality, great investment.

My only quibble with the size is the fact that the shoe feels more comfortable without the insoles. With the insoles my feet feel like they fill the shoe too snugly, not from a toebox width or length vantage but from a top of the foot (midfoot) vantage. If I had high arches I could see why this would be the case, but I have low arches. The insole just adds that little bit of extra stuffing. These are initial quibbles but overall the shoe feels very good, albeit more cushion-y than I am used to, but then, I am in Merrells a lot of the time.

I really want to love this shoe, but I can’t, I like them, but don’t love them, hence 4 stars. There is absolutely no arch support. Yes it’s comfortable, yes it’s responsive, yes my toes feel like they are in heaven, yes they feel great! But after a full day of being on my feet (I’m a teacher) the comfort is gone and my wish for support is there. Do I recommend them? Yes, but not at full price, wait for a sale.

I like the style. It is a nice looking color (blue). The toe box is very large and strange in shape. It is hard to tell if the shoes are actually too large or not because of the toe box. I have only run twice on the treadmill so far to check them out. I usually use a 4 mm drop Saucony Kinvara. I thought I would try the 0 mm drop. I am having a bit of knee pain but not bad and hope my body will adjust. I will keep testing them. I have run in the 5 finger shoes before so I am not new to the minimalist running. The shoes are very light and flexible and I like that. The arch support is very minimal. I will update the review after more miles.

I have an 11 4E wide foot. So I bought a 12 still not wide enough and way to long. Had them a couple months now. They are wide but not 4E wide and being an eleven in a 12 length is just causing my foot to slide and rub causing pain and inflammation. They feel good street runing but as for daily life they cause to much pain for me. I wish I had normal feet cause these are such nice shoes it would be nice if I could truly apriciate them. If they made in a wide it would be perfect I believe. I recommend to any one who does not have super wide feet 3E and wider.

I've had these for over a year. I've run up to 15 miles on them at a time, set my half marathon PR in them, and am still running in them 800 miles later. Super comfortable, super durable.
The one downside is the mesh is a bit too stretchy when cornering. My toes sometimes slide over the insole, which leads to blisters.
Might have to buy a second pair, but these show no sign of wearing out.

Every year, my right big toe pain returns when I start my spring running program (old turf toe injury from rugby). After the same experience this year, a friend turned me on to Altra's. Although I had never heard of the company, I gave them a chance as my pain was so severe I had to stop running. Well, I have had absolutely no pain, anywhere, since running in these shoes. They have changed my life and I am soooo excited to run pain free this year. However, I have only one gripe; the size. I wear a 10.5 in every shoe, but these shoes are too long in a 10.5. However, when I went down to a 10, they were too narrow in the mid-foot which causes an unsightly oblique wripple in the toe box material. If I could only have the length of the 10's with a wider mid-foot, this would be a perfect shoe. For now, I will stick with the 10's and not wear them casually as the wripple looks bad. Hopefully future sizing improves, but for now, thank you Altra for allowing me to run pain free for the first time in many years!!!!!

Bottom line up front: The ego midsole is one of the best I've felt in a running shoe, which makes it a go to shoe for me. I'm not a competitive racer by any means however, I do usually run around 30 miles per week because of being in the military. My 2 mile time is around the 12's and my 5 mile in the low to mid 30's. I would buy this shoe again but beware of the outsole. I have about 100 miles in the shoes and the outsole is showing some wear and some of the rubber is starting to peel up. Just looking at cost vs. wear, not the best.

Running with Escalante is one of my best running experience.
Soft, Springy
Anything is nearly perfect while running.
But I can notice some annoying thing while I am walking with escalante!!!!!
On my right shoe, I can feel like, I AM WALKING ON PLASTIC BUBBLE WRAP!!!!
I can feel popping under my feet.
This annoying thing occur only on the right shoe not left.
I can feel only when I walk. It is ok when I run.

Enjoy the fit, the feel, the flexibility, the light weight...pretty much everything about the shoe. I'm on my 2nd pair, and got pretty good mileage from the first pair. But both pairs, after getting wet during a rainy run, STINK. I can't get rid of the smell, and it's gross. It comes off on my fingers when I lace up the shoes, and I can smell the shoe when I'm standing up (that's about 5'11" stink-radius). My other running shoes don't smell like roses, but none of them smell like this, even my other pair(s) of Altras.

This shoe has been an excellent road training shoe. I have worn it for distances up to 15 miles and they feel great! My only issue is that I currently have around 280 miles on them and there is significant signs of tread wear on the mid foot area where I strike. I was hoping to get at least 400 miles out of them but it looks like 300-320 is a long as they'll last. I will purchase again though.

Full disclosure. I bought these shoes for next year's Boston marathon. Wasn't until I got them that I noticed they were last year's race shoes with the logo identifying them as 2017. Certainly not a deal killer, but it would have been nice to have known ahead of time so I could have considered waiting for the 2018 Boston marathon model. Wondering if l don't run in the purchased 2017 shoes if they will offer option to return and upgrade to the 2018 shoes. Probably not, but you never know.

A woman who loves the men's version. More space for smaller toes. But 7-1/2 qould be a better fit. Weraing 8's but they are really too big. 7's too small. Please! Or give the women's design more space for small toes. Thanks!

The Escalante is one of those shoes that you will fall in love with right out of the box. No break-in time required whatsoever. The upper fits like a glove, and the toe box is the perfect size. Pair that with a soft EGO midsole, and you've got a running shoe that is made for comfort. I ran a 3-minute half-marathon PR in these and was extremely comfortable the whole time. The softness of the midsole is good but seems a little too soft at times, to the point where short, fast runs are better suited by a different shoe. That's the only downside. Overall, though, the Escalante is definitely worth the $130 and is the only shoe that seems to "disappear" from my foot since it's so comfortable and lightweight.

Love the Altra Ego foam and was able to run with faster speed at same effort. Only issues is that the shoe is not as breathable as lets say a zante v3 and feet gets sweaty in a hot climate.

I usually run in shoes with much less stack height because I don't like the cushy feel, and shear movement with so many overly cushioned shoes. The Escalantes however are very comfortable, and at the same time snappy when you pick up the pace. I had to remove the 6mm footbed though, because it adds unnecesessary stack to an already plush shoe, that leads to an unstable feeling (soft on soft is just asking for instability). Without the insole however the Escalante feels much more connected to the ground, without becoming harder.
I detracted a star because the footbed is just foamy plastic, while it should be cloth (like for instance with Skechers) in shoes where the taking out of insoles is a suggested option by the company.
