My favorite shoe without a doubt! Simple yet with a modern look. Love the toe box and the incredible responsive EGO sole. Thank you Altra.

I'm far from the demographic that Altra is targeting. I'm a 70 yr old with foot problems so severe I was going to ask to have my little toe amputated. My son-in-law, who is a tri-athlete, suggested I try these shoes that he uses with the wide toe box. I bought a pair of Escalantes and am amazed at the comfort I've found. I now experience no pain and wear them all the time. I wish I'd found these years ago

After some runs and walks this is my impression of the Escalante. First, it’s a great looking shoe! The cushioning felt very solid and reactive on my runs. My only negative comment would be the minor bit of pinching from the upper of the shoe as it breaks in at the crease.

I've had horrible foot issues and have had foot surgery and since my surgery this is literally the only shoe that I can wear. I've tried on around 15+ different shoes and this is the only one that I can wear with no pain while even just walking. Not only do I have no pain while just walking I can actually run in these shoes comfortably. The knit upper and zero drop has been my life saver! Please do not stop making these shoes and keep making more color and design choices!!!!

Highly recommend for a neutral, cushioned medium/long-distance trainer and Marathon shoe. So, why the surprise? The Escalante doesn't have the hard, fast road "feel" of my other faves, Newton Distance, or other shoes I've owned. The Escalante's charm is that it feels cushioned with no sacrifice in speed. I've run relatively pain free while ramping up mileage a lot. Most importantly, I ran my last Marathon with Escalantes and, despite three hours of rain, never noticed they were there. I ran pain free from feet and knees on up, a Marathon first. I also like the flexibility in a cushioned shoe. Durability is a small concern. While the sole has been remarkably durable, cushioning seems to be breaking down at 400 miles. Then, again, that could be because I used them often on rain and snow wet streets through the winter.

The Escalante is my favorite running shoe to date. I've had a ton a different shoes, but these are just the perfect amount of cush while still being low stack height. I'd really love to just wear them everywhere all the time!

I'm three weeks into these shoes and so far I'm very happy.
About 9 months ago I was experiencing a lot of pain in my foot. I determined it was nerve pain caused by my shoes being too tight in the toebox. I think my feet have gotten bigger. Anyway I bought some larger shoes including some New Balance running shoes. I literally threw away most of my shoes and a few months later the issue cleared up!
Now I'm a big believer in plenty of room around the toes and I was happy to find a shoe company with the same idea! I had also been trying to get to a lower shoe drop and I've always attempted to maintain an efficient stride. Low and behold Altra lines up with everything I'm trying to do.
So, I'm a couple weeks in and so far so good. I love the fit and I used the alternate lacing. These shoes seem fast, I'm usually running 4.5 miles around 8 min which is maybe 20-30 seconds faster than before. I went on vacation and ran this huge hill (it's flat where I live) and my calves were pretty sore. I think it's mostly the hill but also the shoes a little. They're fine now but I can feel my calf/ achilles getting stronger. I use a roller to massage them a little in the evening.
I look forward to many more miles with these shoes! I have a 10k race next week, and a 5k in April and I plan on wearing my escalantes.

I've been wearing Altras for about a year. Not always easy to find in stores but the triathlon store up the road turned me onto them with the Provisions about a year ago and they are my go to shoe! I bought a pair of Paradigms and they started to squeak on the left shoe but no worries that the store went out of business, the company had my back and took care of everything in less than a week.
They are great for my feet and back, keep me centered and - as a shoe connoseur - fit the bill as the finest shoes I've ever owned for walking, running or just bring on your feet. I would highly recommend Altra shoes and being behind decks as a DJ/MC for hours on end... they are probably going to be my dress shoes as well as no matter what I spend on dress/dress casual my dogs are punished for hours after taking them off.
Also, I started with these for proper foot placement as most shoes do NOT allow those piggies room to splay properly ending in knee, hip and back issues... These are what I wear and you should at least check them out as well.

I absolutely LOVE this shoe! At first a little apprehensive about the cost compared to other shoes on the market... but I fell in love with the Escalante the moment I tried them on in the store. Everything I loved about the Nike Free, with the zero drop and wide toe box of an Altra! My first pair just became my "everyday shoe", I'm online right now to buy another pair!

These are great running shoes. I have relatively flat fee but there zero drop is super comfortable. Very lightweight and long runners. I put 500 miles on my previous pair before replacing them.

I used to wear nike frees because of the minimalist approach. I don't like shoes that feel big on my feet! Well nike changes the design of the Frees every few months so now the shoe is to narrow causing nerve pain in my forefoot. I wore Torins and the nerve pain slowly subsided then I tried the Escalante and 'WOW!" It is a minimalist shoe with a resilient soul! I do a lot of short runs and cross training in them. I love the zero drop and the small size allowing the foot to really do all the work! The uppers are not the best for CT but the shoe has good traction and a responsive and durable sole! I keep looking for an excuse to buy another pair but alas they hold up so well! Maybe by spring time!

20 year elite runner with experience in designing for name brands.
Met with the owners of altra when they were just starting out and amazing job to not just break into a tough market but go on to be a main stay and up there with the more well known name brands in the industry.
As everyone else says about this shoe, super comfortable, and will accommodate most feet. I can go on for a while about the pros of this shoe.Too many to list. so 5 star all the way.
Just one flaw. The upper, even though i love it, will soak through to the toes in even the slightest of rain fall. If you live in florida, greatest shoe in the world bar none.
if you live in seattle, like i do, be prepared to have this shoe take on in , soak it up and make your toes feel like you are running through huge puddles of water.
I can put up with this, your supposed to as a runner/athlete, just making the buyer aware.
purchase some of the wet repellent spray and see if that may help.
5 star shoe. go down half size from original instinct etc.

This shoe is just fantastic. It has a great cushion with a lot of bounce (like the adidas Boost, but better). I love the flat ride that forces me to land more mid/forefoot where I should be. And best of all, it's super light! I ran my first marathon in the Escalante and I was more than satisfied. I hope they don't make any changes to this shoe!

I've been running/exercising in Altras since the very first Instincts. I've had Instincts, Ones, Torins and Superiors and the Escalantes are my favorite of them all by far. The sole is incredible, it almost feels as though I'm propelled forward, and the upper feels fitted without feeling tight. Well done Altra!! It'll be hard to be convinced to try and any other model (as long as you don't make changes for the worst).

Had the opportunity to try these out yesterday and I must say the cushioning quality is outstanding. While I usually like a taller stack height on my running shoes because I'm pretty much a slower, older runner, and performance shoes don't fit my running style, I did think the Ego cushioning is extraordinary. Perhaps the best I've tried. I couldn't help but think what would happen if Altra could incorporate this cushioning into all their shoes. I would think the competition would be scrambling to keep up. Would love to see this cushioning on a shoe with a taller stack height.

These feel amazing on my feet! I typically only run 3-5 miles at a time, but these would easily make great shoes for long-distance running as well!

The best Altra ever. I picked up a pair for Christmas. I ran 10 miles straight out of the box. I've run in several Altra shoes. The Escalante is truly a minimalist shoe. The knit upper, zero drop and foot shaped design make this a terrific shoe.
I'm looking forward to putting plenty of miles on these.

I have very strange foot problems caused by other ill fitting shoes. I used to use Instincts which were pretty good but the sizing was all over the place every time a new model comes out. These fit true to size and are a dream to run in.

I love these shoes! The soles are soft and responsive and the upper is super accommodating for extra wide feet. Little arch support but that is normal with zero drop. Best Altra’s yet!

To start: I'm 56. 5'10 and 170 lbs. I've had these for a little over 3 months now. I'm pushing 350 or so miles and have a 1/2 marathon in them. They are hands down the most comfortable shoe I've ever run in. But, I didn't think so at first. I've been running in Instincts for a couple years now and I was sure that the Instincts were the world's most perfect shoe. Be aware: These are not Instincts. My first month in them I had serious reservations. And then I realized the problem wasn't the shoe. It was me. The Instincts were way more supportive, and even though I'd been practicing midfoot strike and strengthening my feet, these push it to the next level. They forced my feet to work harder. It took about a month to transition, but when I did, there was no looking back. I run on blacktop and concrete so the cushioning is fantastic. And I run more quietly than ever. The giant springs in my feet and legs are stronger than ever. My only issue is that if I try to lock the laces in at the top it cuts into the tendon at the top of my foot, so the top eyelet does me no good. Regardless, that's a work around and I will never buy any other shoe.

The Escalante has been my most favorite running shoe ever. I am just over 6'1", 185lbs and a heal / midfoot striker. I have run in these shoes for marathon distances with no issues. So light, airy and yet contains great cushioning. Since my first pair last spring, I have purchased 5 more since (3 still waiting to be used). Please keep this shoe as is!
