As a long time Merrell wearer all I can say is ... darn! For me, the support just wasn't there. The Encores that I wear all the time have much more foot bed support. And weirdly this boot was narrow across the toe bed - a problem I haven't had with Merrell's before.

Very comfortable boot right out of the box,nice to have a normal amount of toe room. I bought the lighter brown color, which is very true to the photos. Now for the reason I gave them 3 stars. DO NOT wear these boots in slush or icy conditions. Although the soles look nice and grabby, they are not. The engineering of the very smooth triangular knobs of the tread will shoot your feet forward, leaving your body behind, which drops with surprising force and speed. If you do it just right, you will also crack your elbows and the back of your head on the auto parts store parking lot. In summary, these are very cute, very comfortable, fair weather boots. Do not wear them in snow, sleet, slush. Do not.

Very cute, and my big ankles actually fit in quite easily. But way too narrow in the toe box (I usually wear a med width shoe)If you have narrower feet they should fit great.

I am on a quest for a winter walking shoe for my "urban hikes" (average 4 - 7 miles) that is substantial and supportive, like a New Balance, but a little warmer for the cold winter, a little higher on the ankle like a chukka boot, and with a bit of an urban hip attitude--not a clunky "earth muffin" style. But not a boot. I have that for snow covered walks and streets. Something in between--a hybrid. I had high hopes for this Merrill even though I had tried other similar Merrill styles before with the same fit and style issues. They all went back, and after agonizing that this may be my last chance (and deep winter is closing in fast), I let this pair go too. The style is so so and I probably could have settled for it, but the deal breaker is the looseness around the ankle, and a little slop around the heel. I couldn't get the laces tight enough to help offset that. I will say it does have a nice roomy toe box, fairly typical of Merrill, and good for those of us afflicted with "kinky" toes. The shoe doesn't have a ton of comfy, cushy support but I think it's probably adequate. Alas, my quest goes on.

Style is cute, but there's not enough structure to this shoe around the ankle for me and it seems to run large. Love Zappos service! Sorry to say these will need to go back!

When I first tried them on they felt a tiny bit snug but not so much that I wouldn't wear them. They seem like the sort of shoes that will stretch a bit. For the first week I wore them they were awesomely comfortable. Right off the bat I took my dog for a three mile walk and the shoes (and my feet) felt great. I wore them every day to work and loved them. Then I wore them to a concert and found that, after standing in them for a couple of hours, they were not so awesome. My feet hurt pretty bad. Never actually had a pair of shoes that are good to walk in but not good to stand in. A few days later I wore them with thick hiking socks and got one of the worst blisters I've ever had, since they are still too snug to wear with wool socks. If I hadn't been wearing them for two weeks I'd exchange them for a half size larger because I love the way they look, and when they are comfortable they are really great shoes.
