I switched from Asics to try supporting an American company with New Balance, but I found the shoe didn't have the cushion I needed for walking on city streets with a bad knee. I am going back to Asics.

I was very disappointed with these shoes for comfort and support. They're on the higher end of the price range (at least when I got mine). I've had good luck with New Balance, and since I wear 4E width I get lots of NB shoes - they consistently make 4E width shoes. These weren't comfortable right out of the box for me, and now 3 months later I'm replacing them because I've developed mild shoe-related foot pain in one foot. I basically just wear these to work, and I do a mile or two of mall walking a week over my lunch break. They don't show any significant signs of wear, and they look nice and fit well otherwise. Still - the mild walking pain is forcing me to get rid of these.

Right shoe was smaller than the left.

This is my third pair of 990v4's and I love them. I use the lace lock system and in the past the laces have been long enough to tie a regular bow to secure the lace. Now however, New Balance must have a new, wet behind the ears, doesn't understand customer satisfaction, MBA type in a back room somewhere who figured out that the company could save "millions" if the laces were shortened by 8 inches. Unbelievable! The laces on these shoes, using the lace lock system are just barely long enough to tie a square knot. Hence the 3 star overall rating.

Would be all in for this shoe if it had some arch support

Been wearing NB for a long time, several pair's of the old 1122 & 1123, & now the 1540 v2 - have had 5 pair so far. Was looking for something better looking than the 1540, & these look great! However, they are significantly more narrow, had to return them & go back to the 1540 that uses the SL2 last.

Overall disappointed in the fit. Pinches my little toe at times, and is built for a low arch - the sides are very low, with the top of the shoe mostly the tongue.

What is happening at NB? Each new version of shoe seems worse than the previous one. I used to swear by New Balance, but I can't find a single running shoe that feels secure on my feet. My heel slips out on these (V4), but V3 were awesome. What a shame. I wanted to love them but I couldn't.

Sole feels lacking in adequate cushioning.

Not very comfortable, overpriced, soles de-laminated in a few weeks. Not too good for $165. Overall D-

I wore these around the house for less than 5 minutes, and they were uncomfortable as soon as I put them on. The toe box was too shallow, the 4E felt more like a regular wide and the fabric was very stiff, plus they felt very heavy. So disappointing as they are one of the few shoes rated for overpronation. They are on their way back.

Still trying to find a good fit and comfortable supportive NB. This is on it's way back-way too narrow and shallow in the toe box . Very heavy with little comfort. Disappointing.

As others, I have been wearing NB 8 1/2 B for 25 years with my last pair a 990 Black/Silver about 2 years ago. Unfortunately, the NB 8 1/2 B from Zappos was more narrow even though it was the same size I have been wearing. I tried two different pair in the same size and neither of them were comfortable. I reported this to Zappos and suggested they may have gotten a bad batch. I ended up purchasing the shoe from another retailer in the same size and it fit perfectly. These shoes generally do not have to be broken in like dress shoes. Zappos was extremely supportive and understanding of my situation and did not hesitate to refund my purchase price for both pair I ordered. I would definitely return to Zappos.

This is the second pair of New Balance I've returned in a week because the 13's run a half size small and the M width is narrow. For 49-years I've never had a wide foot but with New Balance I do now. Thankfully Zappos has an excellent return policy!

This shoe did not fit as expected. It was much narrower than other NB models I have worn. It also was rather dull looking. I will be returning it.

I bought these for my son who is hiking the Appalachian Trail. He wears a size 16w so it is tough to find trail runners for him. These fit well and are comfortable but, within one week the sole started coming off at the toe. For $175 I'd expect them to be more rugged. Disappointed.

Smaller then I expected. Could barely get them on. Also did not receive any documentation with the order. Not sure ho to return them.

About 5 years ago, I purchased a pair of M990 shoes from a shoe store that carries NB and found the shoe to be quite comfortable, and as I sit here and write this review I am wearing those same shoes. Now I learned the due to the cut of the shoe that I need to wear one size larger. Normally, I wear a 14C shoe. So my current M990's are a 15B since NB doesn't have a 15C. I decided since I already own a pair of M990's to purchase another pair from Zappos in size 15B. When the shoes arrived the right foot shoe fit was snug but ok to wear. When I put on the left shoe my toes were crunched and the shoe felt too small to wear. I immediately went on line with Zappos and ordered the same shoe in size 15D. When these shoes arrived and in trying them on the right shoe was a comfortable, although a little less snug on right foot but the left foot shoe was a snug and uncomfortable to wear and by big toe was hitting against the front of the shoe. When I compared the soles of the newer M990V4 15B and 15D shoes against the older M990V4 shoe, I noticed both the newer shoes 15B and 15D are considerably NARROWER than the older shoe thus causing the discomfort. I sent back both pairs to ZAPPOS but I'm still searching ZAPPOS for a NB shoe, and may even try a 15EE shoes in the M990 style to see if that provides a comfortable fit. STAY TUNED...........

I have worn New Balance athletic shoes for many years. I tried to order the same as a previous pair, but NB "upgraded" the shoe. These were too narrow, and did not accommodate my high arch.

Very poor fit for the outrageous price!!!

Overpriced and underwhelming. Within a week the thin outer sole is delaminating. Not what you’d expect from $160 sneakers.

I have been a New Balance show purchaser for years. I was hoping this shoe would be the perfect answer to a long day of standing. I had very high expectations. When I put the shoes one I was instantly underwhelmed They did not feel any better than the last older model shoes I had worn that day. I wore them in the house for the next 3 hours off and on to see I could get to like them. They actually made my feet hurt! I reluctantly had to return them. Very disappointed! Zappos on the other hand was stellar again in their service! I went on the website, did the return thing and got the label. Packaged everything up and taped it up and then took it to UPS Store the next day. The web site said it would take 5 to 7 days to refund. I don't know how but as soon as the guy scanned it in I got approved for the refund! The money was back in my account the next day! I was amazed! Zappos is the best! I am planning on ordering 3 other pairs of shoes from them for work. They have a loyal customer for life!

I've been wearing 990's and 993's for the last 20 years, and I never had a problem with any of them. I ordered two pairs of M99V4's, and returned both them due to stiffness in the medial & lateral plantar area of my feet. The reason I feel is the shoe sole is considerably stiffer that the 990's & 993. This results in a stiff, inferior fit. I will be looking for another brand of shoe. This shoe costs too much money to fit nothing less than perfect, as the previous models did in the past. I strongly recommend trying on this brand and model at a local store before ordering it online to make sure it fits the same as the older New Balance models.
