Went to Vietnam for 2 weeks with this bag and looked for something that could go anywhere and travel fast, as well as meet carryon requirements. Having gone 25k+ miles over 7 planes, 5 cars and 2 scooters, I can safely say this is the best carryon bag i've owned and helped me focus on a minimalist approach to travel. Never been excited for a pack as much as this one. Got a simple combo lock that happened to fit through BOTH lockable zippers at once, so double win. I also own an Aether 70 for backpacking, so I understand utility vs comfort, heavy vs light load, etc etc. Don't normally write reviews online, but i felt this was warranted. Great pack!

Good sturdy bag but its not quit big enough for me i could probably lose a couple of items to get it to work. There is one problem though it is suppose to fit a 15in computer which is not correct it is 15in in length. Very comfortable when loaded with 10kg just wish it fit the computer. Will have to return

Just right size for my needs for traveling,I always take it carry on,have not checked it traveling Asia on 6-8wk trips, I just pack what I need, don't purchase the beautiful junk much anymore, but made room for 1kg of black peppercorns from Malaysia on way home one trip. Best travel pack I have ever owned, highly recommend this one for some one that travels with the essentials.

I bought this bag for a 4 month backpacking trip through SE Asia. I'm about a month in and so far this bag has been everything that I need it to be! My only downside is that it doesn't meet the carry-on size for AirAsia, a low-cost carrier in the region. It does fit carry-on size for Delta Airlines however so I can't really complain. I would recommend both this pack and Osprey products in general to everyone who needs a reliable pack.

I bought two Opsrey backpacks--the Farpoint 40 and the Ozone 46. My 13 year old son carried the Farpoint and I carried the Ozone for a three week trip through Italy. Both packs worked great for us, but we both preferred the Farpoint. It turns out we didn't need all the pockets on the Ozone. The Farpoint you can open like a suitcase and that is really helpful for packing. It seemed more compact for traveling but also seemed to hold as much stuff. The one think I liked better on the Ozone was the easy access iPad pocket.

Have traveled with backpacks for 40+ years but this is the best pack I've ever had. I did a lot of research before buying this, and it turned out to be perfect for the type of travel I do....international, fairly lengthy, and pretty active. I can only assume that whoever designed it has traveled extensively like I have. I object to a whole bunch on unnecessary straps, zippers, or little pockets....I've even been known to cut showy, weighty things off brand new packs...but this pack hits just the right balance of features, security, and size/weight. The fact that it's carry-on compatible on most scheduled air carriers is just a bonus. A wonderful backpack.

This bag is an all-round solid bag for folks who like to travel light. It is highly adjustable with an excellent hip belt for carrying all day long. It is lightweight, attractive, and flies under the radar as it is carry-on compatible. I use one large and two medium packing cubes to keep my clothes organized inside, but am blown away by how much this bag fits.

I was looking for a backpack style carry on and this was the best one I found. I use it all of the time for business and personal travel. Love it!

The bottle pockets in the back are useless, because it makes bottles unaccessible und moves the center of gravity in an inconvenient way. They need to be moved to the sides like standard backpacks. No complaints aside from that. Perfect carry on backpack for long/minimalist travels.

Great pack, but water bottle pocket will not hold the bottle intact. Also, the waist belt is much too short and small, barely reaches around on a 36" waist. Otherwise, a great pack.

Bought this while on 20% sale, got the red one. I love this pack just from its look, the red color is awesome. I'm an underwater photgrapher who have been looking a perfect pack for carrying my camera, lenses, its housing and my laptop. The pack I've been looking for should be large enough to carry above items, but not too bulky as a carry-on luggage. Stumbled upon this pack while I was 'window shopping' at the Eiger store in my home town, attracted to its color and the discounted price. Tested it for stuffing all the camera gears and laptop, it fits nicely...even I still have plenty of spaces for other accessories. There you go...it's now become my carry-on pack when I'm traveling for diving. In summary: this pack has awesome look, enough for my needs, looks very sturdy. The harness system is very comfortable. It's defintely not designed for a long day hike, but it's doing its job for a short walk between airport terminals and gates. This pack can fit most of aircraft overhead bin, even in an ATR 600. The placement of laptop compartment probably not the most secure position, but you could stuff a thin fleece jacket in the front compartment to give extra protection from bump, and it has lockable zips too. However, you should pack your stuffs properly in the main compartment to make sure the laptop compartment remain flat (the internal compression straps should do the job). Downside: you need to buy raincover for this (you want to keep this beautiful bag clean..right?), and the placement of ID tag is not very smart. You might need to find a right water bottle if you want to have a perfect fit for the ackward mesh pockets.

I've had this pack for years and use it often on pleasure/business trips. It fits in the overhead and holds clothes/shoes for days. Stowing the shoulder straps and hip-belt is ingenious, and it clears the "clutter" that gate agents may take for an oversize bag. When they are stashed, there are several padded handles that are well located so you can carry it like a suitcase. But, I am disappointed the fabric has ripped in two locations where the handles are sewn to the bag. Better reinforcing could have been placed at those critical junctions. I've wanted to send back for repair, but use it so much that I haven't found the time. The main compartment is roomy, and there are two compression straps. I use packing cubes, and if you don't, you will find your items move around as the straps only do so much (with or without cubes). Shoes can go at the bottom for balance. On the underside of the main flap, there is a mesh divider, and that can be handy to separate out folded dress shirts so they don't get too wrinkled. The exterior pocket is padded for a laptop, but like many have stated, you are taking a risk putting an electronic in it. It isn't for lack of padding, but for bending caused by the bowing of the bag when you pack the main compartment. The padding is quite thick, but is is essentially just taking up room since folks don't feel comfortable placing a laptop in it. Use the mesh pockets on the outside at your own risk. A water bottle will not stay, regardless of what the photos show, And having to wrap the compression strap over the mesh pockets (whether full or not) means you have to unhook them to take something out. Speaking of which, one of my buckles cracked and that too needs replacing now. I have lost shampoo, soap, etc. from those pockets and not even realized it. It is a great pack, but there must be improvement of basic things (handle/fabric connection, mesh exterior pockets, buckle strength, laptop location) before giving 5-stars!

The Farpoint 40 is my first backpack travel luggage. I chose it for the combination of proper backpack features and satisfactory interior space. I used it on a 7-day vacation in Japan (a place with stunning fall season color, BTW). My loaded 20-lb. pack was balanced and comfortable on my 5'11" body. There are features of a quality hiking backpack: a stable but lightweight frame, contoured shoulder harnesses featuring load lifter straps that prevent sagging away from your back, sternum strap and hip belt that perfectly transfers weight away from the shoulders. I had a comfortable, hands-free trek through an airport terminal, onto a monorail, up and down subway stairs and along a half mile of sidewalk to my hotel. I'll never drag along rolling carry-on luggage again. Inside the main compartment, I fit four days worth of clothing: a pair of shoes, shirts/pants in one large and one medium Osprey packing cubes, sweater, rain jacket, and small items like underwear, eyeglass cases and belts. The TSA-approved one-quart bag of toiletries fit in the external front zip pocket. With the main compartment filled, the middle pockets for a laptop computer and other items get compressed, but I fit slim items like travel documents and the detachable shoulder strap. That strap is actually convenient to quickly carry the pack at your side in the airport gate, and when boarding aircraft and trains. I love how the harness can be folded under a secure, zippered panel to streamline the pack in an aircraft cabin overhead compartment or when checking luggage on a small regional jet. To stow the harness behind the panel, loosen the load lifter straps so the shoulder harnesses fold flat -- otherwise they stick out and don't compress. I am happy with this pack. I rated it four instead of five stars because the zippers are not high-quality YKK, so their long-term durability is unknown. Also, the Volcanic Grey color is actually a greenish-gray, NOT the true charcoal gray pictured online.

Cons: no accessible pockets while wearing. Be practical and sew a thin fabric pocket on the right hip strap to drop your phone in. Add a matching one on the left for your super skinny wallet. Straps too long: measure, cut and sear the new ends of the straps to reduce the number of dangling leashes. Remove entirely the inside compression straps. Your pack will always be full and contents will not shift. No one who finds y our lost pack will EVER find the name/address pocket rolled up and hidden in bottom cavity. Sew a name/address patch on the Osprey logo black tongue inside the laptop section. It will quickly be discovered by anyone who finds your pack.

Before hiking the Camino for two weeks last month, I researched travel packs extensively. This one is the best, even with the Cons I have listed. Other reviewers noted the water bottle issue. Packing with two medium cubes really helped keeping my pack organized. Four and a half stars!

I was easily able to pack as much into this backpack as I have into a carry-on size hard rolling suitcase, and it was reasonably comfortable to carry to and from trains and subways. I appreciated the outer straps that let me squeeze it down to make sure it would be carry-on size, the 3-sided un-zippability of the cover so I could open it up like a suitcase, and the multiple zippered compartments. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I think it was a tiny bit long for my torso, and I belatedly discovered that Osprey has a separate women's Fairpoint 40 that might have fit me better. (I bought this one so close to our departure date that I didn't have time to investigate the women's version.) Even if this might not be the best pack for me to carry all day, it was great for travel.

My partner and I bought these packs over 2 years ago now. They still look brand new, despite using them quite a lot. We have the large size (42 Litres). This size is perfect for us, and we intend on using them when we travel full time. I only have a few issues with this bag. 1. The laptop compartment is at the front of the bag. This changes how the weight is distributed. It should be against your back. 2. The water bottle holders at the front are pretty useless. If your bag isn't completely full, you can use them. But with the straps going over the top, it's still not very convenient or secure. 3. I wish there were more compartments for little pieces. Apart from those issues, I love these bags and do recommend them.

I was looking for a stylish carry-on travel backpack for a 2-week trip to Europe and used it on every single trip since then. It just so convenient to bring the bag with me especially when I already need to deal with two checked-in luggages. This backpack gives me additional spaces to bring more items and still be able to move around without asking for help. The backpack is a carry-on size, but when my trip involves one or more stops, I would check this bag. The padded hip belts and should straps really help carry the weight. I am about 5' tall and 90lbs, and I have no problem carry 22lbs (or more). If you are also a petite person, I would recommend the new women version: Fairview 40. That bag has shorter torso and hip belts. Beside the pros I mentioned above, there are major things that I have to complain; 1. It is impossible to reach a water bottle in the mash pocket when the backpack is on my back, and not to say when the backpack is full, it is super hard to put a bottle in there 2. There is no pocket attached on hip belts which make it really inconvenient to store money, cards, tickets and cell phone 3. The laptop sleeves is built in the middle compartment. That means the weight of the laptop is not close to my body, and when the backpack is full, it is hard to squeeze the laptop into the sleeves without worrying the possibility of damaging the laptop.

I use this for business travel for 5+ years. Great for carry-on in the USA can go overhead or under the seat even when full. I also use this to travel to China with 2 weeks of clothes (packing experts only). Comfortable for broad shoulders, but cannot remove/put away the hip belt when using the shoulder straps which gets in the way (must always fold them under after mounting the pack). The outside water bottle holders don't work for me when the pack is full. The metal frame is wonderful and is very comfortable on my back. The zippers have held up under stress, but they always feel subpar compared to my other packs with premium YKK zippers that seem to get better with use. Overall I recommend this pack for airline travel, but the fact Osprey has not updated this pack over the years means I will pass on it when my current one wears out (starting to wear out now with material rips).

I really want to love this bag - all positives have basically been said in other reviews so I won't repeat them. The major flaw for me were the mesh pockets; I found that they were very difficult to access while carrying the pack, and being that they were deep meant that smaller items could get lost easily. This was all the more annoying because of the severe lack of other outside pockets that could be accessed while wearing, so access travel documents, maps, passports, compass, snacks etc necessitated either removing the bag entirely or having to carry a second bag. The other issue I have is the size of the carry handles - they're unnecessarily bulky and heavy; it's a 40l pack, no one (unless you're a hopelessly bad packer) is really going to carry that much weight as to need such handles. They also take up room that could otherwise be used for a side or top pocket. If neither of these things are an issue for you then I highly recommend the bag. It's well constructed, relatively lightweight and easy to pack.

Love this backpack but it could definitely have been better. Missing in this backpack is an organizer for basic stuff like zip-pockets, card holder, travel documents, pen slots, key lanyard etc.. The pouch on the top has only one compartment and that makes it so messy. I am surprised that Osprey did not think of this....

I used this pack for the 6 month trip through central and south america, plus a bit of europe. I absolutely loved the pack in all ways except for the laptop/tablet pocket. While its great that it's padded, having it on the front is completely the wrong spot. When you fill your pack the front of the pack is curved, which puts pressure on the tablet. This mean i had a cracked screen as it bent slightly in the bag, making it unusable just 1 month into my trip, and 400 bucks down the drain :( Apart from this, it's still a great pack, and if they fix this flaw I would definitely buy the next version. Until i'll use a different option.

If you're short, this pack is going to throw you off balance once its fully packed. For reference, I'm 5'4" and bought the "S/M" version of the pack - its ridiculously top heavy. The pack does have a lot of room on the interior, especially using packing cubes, but all of the weight is distributed to the top and front of the bag making it impossible to sit it down upright and straining your shoulders (even with the waist strap). Also, the laptop sleeve is absolutely terrible; even if the pack is appropriately filled (ie not stuffed to the absolute max), it still puts a ton of stress on the laptop sleeve and thus your laptop, making me concerned its going to bend my computer (Macbook Air). Overall the bag bulges, is clunky, and puts all of its weight on your shoulders if you're short, and I couldn't imagine hauling it around all day for something like a backpacking trip. But, I'm stuck with it because of Osprey's limiting return policy, so it will probably be relegated to "only if we have to" use.
