I love this layer. The versatility is amazing. I wore it on a hike in sleet and it held up like a champ. It's not water proof, but the water resistance is very good. I was only wearing this and a wool base layer and I was fine. I also have the Atom LT, but I reach for the SL way more than anything else. I wear it around town under a zip hoodie, and with the addition of a warm scarf, I can make it through 90% of The Colorado winter! For the rest of the winter it's this and the Gamma MX hoodie... and only rarely will I need the LT. I don't regret a single penny I spent on this!

Love this hoody i've used in multiple times while mountain biking and trail running and it has not failed me yet. Love the material and how light it is will continue to use in the future.

A great do-it-all layer, I use it as a light sheel when i commute or as a midle layer under my shell jacket under harsher conditions. I love the feel of it, it feels absolutley wheightless.
When I bought it I wasent sure how much use I would have for it, now I use it almost everyday for everything, very versetaile.
If I would change one thing, I would ad muds to the sleves to not let in air and be more adapteble to different arm lenghts (which I have with my sewing machine).

Love the Atom SL Hoody. I ski in the winter, sail in the summer & hike in spring/fall. The fit is great ( size sm; wt: 105 ht: 5'2") Stylish & comfortable. All year use.

I bought this after a friend raved about it, and was skeptical that this jacket could provide significant warmth, given its weight. I was wrong. It provides great insulation even through chilly foggy evenings and layers effortlessly under heavier layers. I love the flexibility of the fit - I feel total freedom of movement.

So I got this "jacket" (more of a high tech shirt) about a month ago and I enjoy it. I love my Atom Lt and wanted something I wouldn't overheat in when the sun comes outand its just about 10C. Definitely don't expect the same versatility from this hoddy as the Lt but if you're active with temps below 10C or at rests it's pretty good. This piece isn't something that everyone needs but its a quick sweater I throw on all the time even when I don't need a jacket.
I've seen a review that says the sleeves are too long and I agree that they feel long but at full extension they're perfect (just an odd shape so they rub on the back of your hand) (ape index of ~1.1). The cuffs aren't the same heat sealing cuffs as the Lt but this seems better suited as a windbreaker with the looser fit. This also lends well to layering the SL over the Lt (jacket) to add a few degrees of comfort. The fit of the Sl is not as roomy as the Lt but definitely not tight.
A few things I would tweak about the design is to add an inner chest pocket and have hand warmer pockets. If you're familiar with the Lt then you'll know that Arc'teryx has ingeniously placed the pockets underneath the coreloft layer plus a fleece lining so you can actually warm up. With the Sl the pocket has no insulation protecting your hands from the elements (just 20d nylon). This also presents a problem if you do use the Sl as an outer layer in cold conditions (maybe it would be possible to put a slit in the inner nylon so you could get to your Lt pockets underneath but that wouldn't happen). By placing the pockets underneath the coreloft you wouldn't need the fleece lining so the weight and materials would be the same.
So put the coreloft on the outside like the Lt please!

This jacket has become my go-to layer for rock, ice and alpine climbing and skiing. The trim fit allows me to wear it under my heavier winter climbing layers without being bulky, and is breathable to not make me sweat excessively. It provides good wind resistance making it great for winter approaches and ski touring. In the summer, it has become my primary insulated layer on rock and alpine routes as it packs well, is super light weight and surprisingly durable. With the fit and lack of bulk, it's also become my city jacket. My only complaint is that you cannot stuff this jacket into itself and clip to your harness.

I'm not going to lie, I totally underestimated this jacket. I was completely doubting the usefulness of a 'microlayer' until I tried it on for the first time. This hooded jacket is perfect to throw in a pack whether I'm climbing, biking, or hiking. It packs down to almost nothing, but offers the perfect layer to cut a chilly mountain breeze or protect you from a light drizzle. It breaths well and has just the right amount of insulation. It's like a technical lightweight version of your comfiest cotton hoody that you wear around the house..but so much more functional.

This is a layer you throw your pack and almost forget it's there until you need it. It packs down to almost nothing, and is super lightweight, but perfect when you need a bit of extra warmth or protection from the breeze. It was ideal for the cloudy days and light rain, as well as some of the blustery days when you need something to take edge off of the chill. It is stylish enough to wear to dinner or around town after the sun goes down too.

The Atom SL is a very adaptable jacket. Alone it is a great alpine windbreaker and insulating layer. It breathes much better than the Atom LT and therefore is in my opinion a better layer for more active endeavors. When backcountry skiing in colder weather the Atom SL is my third layer. It hits the right level of warmth and breathability and has enough water resistance to stay dry in a light snow.
I am 6'2 and 185 and the Large fits well.

The Atom SL is my all-season, everything jacket. I wear it while rock climbing, alpine climbing, resort skiing, ski touring, mountain biking, bike commuting to work, hiking, running, boating, around town, and at work. The DWR lasts super well and beads water (and beer) like a pro. I have washed this jacket many times and re-activated the DWR with a quick spin in the dryer and it is like new each time. This jacket is extremely comfortable to wear in pretty much any temperature, and it is great for cool days, days that are warm with a slight breeze, and perfect for cold winter days when you are moving and need less insulation and more breathability. I've put this thing through the wringer, and I think that the Atom SL is almost the perfect jacket! My few suggestions: better abrasion resistance for alpine climbing (I have some small abrasion tears on the chest from climbing Mount Stuart and other alpine climbs), get rid of the adjustable hem drawcord (this is useless and just adds weight), and add a chest pocket on the inside of the jacket for storing small items that you don't want near your harness/touching your hands when you want to use your pockets. Other than that, this is my favorite piece in my quiver of outerwear/puffy jackets! I can't imagine my adventures without this piece now that I own the Atom SL. Get one and you will not be disappointed!
I am 5'5", 120 lbs, and athletic with small hips. I have this in both the women's size M and men's size S and I like the long fit of the men's Atom SL better.

5'10" 160 ordered medium. fit pretty snug, exchanged for large. prefer the extra room in arms, chest, back/ length. I'd say size up so you can layer and not feel so restricted. Fits well over Large covert hoody. excellent soft shell material neoprene like, semi stretchy, and durable. keep the jacket zipped up with the front pockets opened and it is like you have flank vents. you can tell the material is very breathable as soon as you put it on.

Perfect for "shoulder season". The Tyono fabric blocks wind, and the touch of insulation covers dips in temperatures during mornings and evenings. Torrent mapping on the inside of the arms and the sides of torso provides excellent airflow. I take it pretty much everywhere. For sizing reference, at 6'2", 175#, my "medium tall" frame fits neatly into a size L. When I laid out the Atom SL against my old size M Aphix hoody, I found that it was nearly identical in cut. If you're a medium tall, I guess you're a Large now for Arcteryx sizing.

I own a lot of insulated jackets and this is the one I reach for most often. It's almost perfectly tuned to the type of average / high output activities we enjoy here in Colorado - climbing, cycling, hiking, etc, etc... While there's no such thing as a "quiver of one" for me this is the jacket that spans the greatest range of activities and seasons. The Atom SL is so lightweight packing it for most adventures is a no-brainer. It does a good job of blocking wind and will shed a light precip. So far it's been plenty durable for rough and tumble activities like alpine rock. When the weather turns particularly cold or nasty I just pull over a shell (an Alpha FL usually) and I feel like I'm covered for everything except truly extreme conditions. The fit is rather trim and will accommodate a light to medium weight base layer easily while also acting as a fantastic mid layer beneath an outer. My two main feedback points are 1) consider extending the hemline a little to provide additional coverage and to stay under a harness and 2) I would also like to be able to pack the jacket into it's own pocket. That being said, I appreciate the high pockets which are still usable beneath a hip belt or harness.

I recently added the Atom SL to my arsenal for hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. The fit of the jacket is perfect, neither too loose or too restrictive. I am 5'11" and 150 lbs, and a medium works perfectly, with room for base layers or work attire. The breathability of this jacket is tremendous. I wore this as a midlayer under my Beta SV on a day of winter hiking in knee to waist-deep snow, with frequent scrambling and steep climbs. I felt warm, but I was never overheated or sweating too heavily. I am frequently shedding layers in such activities with other clothing choices, including the Atom LT, yet this combination worked great. The weather was 30F, sunny, with some wind and high humidity, so I feel confident in the range of this jacket as a mid and outer layer. The no-slip zipper is effective and works. The two hand pockets, while not insulated, are secure and easily carry small objects, such as a wallet or a cell phone during activities. The hood, while useful in windy environments, seems too flimsy and minimalist. While the adjustment cord is placed correctly for tightening, I find that a hood on a jacket such as the Norvan is more protective and feels more secure. While the fabric is thin and breathable, I would love to see either minimal insulation or greater structure to the hood.

This is probably the best fitting jacket I have! My first impression of this jacket was that it was too thin to keep me warm, but surprisingly, when I wore it to go hiking (40 degrees F) I didn't feel cold at all. Overall very slim great fitting jacket as well as extremely lightweight. Very versatile and can be worn in urban environment easily. I only wish there was a pocket inside.
I am 5'5" and 135lbs wearing a size XS.

This is a great slightly insulated jacket that I use for running when temps are below 40 F. The hood to the jacket works perfectly when zipped up to the top.

Super versatile jacket. It packs away to nothing and is alway there, ready to ward off that chill on milder windy days or in damp conditions. I use it for early morning approaches, paddling on windy lakes and when riding my bike on cooler days. Really, I use it whenever my Atom LT is just a little too warm.
The fit is true to size. I am 6'2" and weigh 188 pounds. The size large provides me with a comfortable, but athletic fit.
One of my favorite Arcteryx pieces...
