Normally in the Hoka line I wear a men's size 11. These shoes were a half a size too small, meaning I probably need a size 11 1/2 in this model. Interestingly in the Asics line I wear a men's size 12!

Hoka took the Stinson Trail and matched it with the Salomon Speedcross and the Speedgoat was born. Great protection from running on sharp rocks, fast turnover and INCREDIBLE traction !

I put the Speedgoat through its paces on the most technical trail where I live. Hills, Mud, Clay, Gravel, Grass, Dirt, Loose Stone. The SG's performed admirably in everything but the goopiest of mud where I lost traction (but less so than in any other pair of shoes I have ever worn on that trail) I felt like I was running on trampolines. Where the SG really shined for me was on the downhills. I just wanted to run faster and faster. My knees and ankles felt 10 years younger on the descents!
Sizing: I normally wear a normal width shoe. Have been training in the Brooks Ascend and the SG is definitely more narrow. Not overly tight for me, but if I were running anything of great distance such as the Speedboat 50k, I would be concern about pinching, blisters, and hot spots, but I haven't experienced anything like that with the runs that I've been doing (9 miles or less)

I've had these pair for two weeks and put on 75 miles. My preliminary assessment: The shoe is very light and has excellent traction and cushioning. It does not drain well and is narrower/tighter in the toe box. The fit feels different and definitely requires time to adjust. I rolled my ankle 4 times and had several blisters. This has never happened on my Challenger ATR and Cliftons.
Will take them out for another long run this weekend!

Love the shoe but it is a little tight. I got blisters on the little toes after a 22 mile trail run. I had to return them for a 1/2 size bigger.

Great for what they are. A serious mountain shoe. Descending technichal terrain is awesome in these shoes. Running the road feels like running on a puffy soccer cleat but its okay for getting to the dirt. They are a little heavy for racing but not bad.

Broke in fairly quickly (three runs, approx 30 miles) and used for a trail marathon within a week of receipt.

I came out of the brooks pure grit. I wanted a light shoe, with good tread, that was able to perform on the trails. These Speed Goats fit the bill, and have done well - I've done mainly non-technical trails, but heavy on mud and grit, and they've met each trail with facility.

I was pleasantly surprised by the shoe's comfort, responsiveness and traction. Glad that Hoka FINALLY responded to Salomon's incredible SpeedCross 3!

got one run in the new speedgoats, tight in the toe box, maybe should have gone up 1/2 size. but love the way they run, great traction, great cushioning. going to try a little different lacing pattern. if you have been looking for the hoka that we fit a narrow foot, the speedgoats are the shoe. i am a hoka wearer for life, been in them since 2010 - on my 9th pair

Jury is still out on the 'Goats for me. The traction seems most excellent. They seem very light. The cushioning seems great. But like many Hoka's these seem narrow, especially in the toe box. If they were a bit wider in the fore and midfoot, I would give these a solid 4 stars without having significant mileage on them. I did roll/stability once on a sharp 180 degree turn. Never happened in any other shoe.
I checked "yes" to recommend to a friend, but I would quantify that recommendation with them first.

Awesome trail shoe & super squishy. Great traction, nimble, less likely to roll an ankle as the height is less. Very light and more bouncy than my HOKA Conquests.
Only drawback for me is my right arch is lower than the left resulting in a right arch blister using insole supplied. After fiddling with the insole and breaking them in- fit is awesome- providing hours of comfort.

New tread design offers great traction on trails in wet, dry and loose conditions.

Besides filling really narrow not being seamless was an issue due to an imperfection on the shoe stitches in one of my hookas inside on the toebox area, I had to take to go the shoemaker fora fix , I bought my pair here but because I live in another country I couldn apply for a return

Loved the look and feel but I was disappointed in how quickly the souls wear down. I run 4-5 miles a day six days a week. After one month I needed to replace them. I sent them back and got the challengers. They are not as comfortable but are so far holding up much better.
I would recommend these strictly for trails only. Not roads or treadmills. Perhaps as gym shoes only with no treadmill use.

Really hoping for wider toe boxes similar to Altra's. These are wonderful shoes but just don't allow my feet and toes to position themselves in a comfortable manner for longer runs. I'm patiently waiting for a more natural-shaped design.

Hoka's are great shoes in general but (at least for me) the treads tend to wear off very quickly. The Speedgoat's with a Vibram outsole where what I was hoping was an exception - but it is not, they still wear very quickly - I have about 50 miles on these and the treads are around 1/2 worn out already - from hard dirt trails. The treads are very very sticky, when you walk across pavement you will 'feel' them stick. But they are hard to beat in terms of lightness and comfort, though one should note that the toe box narrows too quickly and wearing toe socks means you should move up at least a half size for long run/hikes.
Conclusion:
Pluses - Comfort, weight
Minuses - Tread wear, tight toe box
I'd also recommend:
Salomon

Like the cushion and traction but caused me to supinate (roll outward). Probably good for someone who over pronates.

I run ultra trail. This is my second pair and it's a great shoe. The weight, cushion, and roll of the shoe brought me back. But on technical trail the fit is too loose. The perfect trail shoe for me would be the Speedgoat with Salomon sensifit interior.

Love Hoka, but really wish I could blend this with the toebox of the Altra Olympus.

These shoes are the most comfortable trail shoes I've ever worn. They work well in a huge range of terrain including very slippery mud. They feel super fast and light and offer great support. I've never had a blister with these shoes, I ran 47kms straight outa the box with not a single issue. However after only 400kms they have already got holes in the uppers and will only last another 100kms which is extremely disappointing for the hefty price I paid for them. If you want a reliable shoe which will last you a season of training then these are not the shoes for you. My cheap nike trail shoes have lasted twice the distance. I really wanted to have a long term relationship with Hokas but the poor design of the uppers has been disappointing. If your gonna put fantastic grip and cushioning on a shoe why would you design such a weak upper?

I'm a fairly high volume runner for an average slow guy (70+ mpw) with anywhere from 7-10 different shoes in my rotation at any given time. I've been wanting to run in Hokas for a long time because my feet are typically pretty beat up after 30+ miles on the trails.
I gave the Speedgoat a shot without trying them on in-store because nowhere local (Portland, OR) carried them at the time. I took them on a single 12 mile trail run over a week ago and they were the direct cause of an injury to my foot.
The disclaimer is that I know I have narrow feet and all other Hokas I tried on were never purchased because my foot flailed around in them. The Speedgoat offering was supposed to be more narrow so I purchased online.
I'm pretty bummed because I was hoping these would be my shoe for an upcoming 100k. The traction on these is absolutely fantastic for the PNW. I have not run in any other dedicated trail shoe that compares on that front.
However, the width of the toebox was too much for my foot. I could feel my foot loose in the shoe and probably should have cut the run shorter.
I would hands down recommend this shoe if it fits your foot well, but if you have narrow feet be especially careful.

Overall, not bad. Would really benefit from a Clifton 2 makeover. In fact, is the Clifton two were given the sole of this show, it would be a perfect trail shoe!
