This bag has somehow survived more than seven years of what surely counts as backpack abuse, and with zero damage to function.
I've mainly used it for school, where I'm usually carrying several notebooks and binders, a textbook or two, a 13in Macbook, a few smaller books, some snacks, and a large pencil pouch (at least). It also took me on a three day trip up and down a mountain and countless out-of-town adventures. When I packed lightly, this bag could easily hold everything I needed for a week long leisure trip.
The only reason I'm buying a new one is because my 100lb rescue dog chewed the front buckle off one day when he was left home alone and anxious, and it wasn't really something that could be repaired. The pocket itself is fine, and everything else about the bag still works perfectly, so it's totally a petty thing. Also I figure if the old one's made it through all this, I might as well give it a rest.
I cycle regularly, and love the features this newer design offers to hold bike lights, helmets, and locks, and love the way TNF packs can be customized so much for comfort. It means a lot when you're sitting in a weird position on a bike. (I am a woman, and bought basically this same one when I got my first one, and it has fit wonderfully, despite not being tailored to more feminine proportions.)
Plus, I'm messy, and this bag keeps me as organized as I'll ever be (without being overwhelming or absurd about it).
My only complaint is that two of the zipper pulls broke off a couple years ago, but it looks like they've changed the design now, so it shouldn't be a problem.

This backpack looked great online and even better in person. I needed a better backpack to replace my old worn-out beat-up Jansport backpack and I am so glad that I chose this Recon bag from Northface. It's incredibly well padded so it feels great resting on your shoulders and back. It's also very lightweight, contrary to my first assumptions about it. Its material quality is second to none, no zipper snagging, no tears from long time use(that I can forsee at least), and its padding is incredibly soft and cushioned to protect your more susceptible belongings as well. To sum up shortly, super stylish, sleek, comfortable, less prone to soaking in water, nice feel and a lot of compartments for whatever your needs.

This backpack is so comfortable. I bought it to use for travel and for work. I can fit a lot of items inside, including my 17" MacBook Pro, so that's great! Doesn't feel heavy at all

Super satisfied! The quality you expect from North Face and it's great for school. As a college student, I have to haul my laptop all over campus but its so much easier with this bag. Definitely recommend.

My daughter is in high school and carries way to many books (in my opinion) and this backpack covers it!!! It's not easy finding a large enough backpack that's also so sturdy! She LOVES the color and is, believe it or not, excited to use it! Thank you!

I use this for traveling around the country for work. It's great for easy loading of electronics and other essentials. I like the padding which takes stress off my body with when caring large amounts of equipment. The bag provides great storage and great organizational compartments.

Used as a school backpack in college. Survived a car crash and protected everything that was inside. Love it!

Absolutely love this backpack. Very lightweight and can hold a lot of stuff. I recently used it on a trip overseas and it was the only carry on I needed for 3 weeks of vacation.

I bought this backpack after going through two backpacks during my first two years of college. I wanted a backpack that would be sturdy, reliable, and could hold all of my big engineering textbooks easily. So far this backpack is everything that I wanted! It is a little more expensive than a typical school backpack, but it's definitely worth the money

I bought my first Recon backpack 10 years ago. I took it everywhere and used it for everything. After getting a lot of mileage out of it, it was time to replace it this Spring. Though I was very hesitant to let my original Recon go, the new one is just as amazing and served me very well on a glacier hike in Iceland this past week.

The Recon is replacing a North Face daypack that I've had since 1995. It's amazing how much NF day packs have advanced since then. The inner pockets are great. Shoulder straps are comfortable and are ventelated. Vent system on back is well done and sits on your back with out tired you out. Material quality is good.
The only complaint I have is that the inner laptop pocket takes up too much space when there is no laptop in there. But it is that way due to the design that will do a great job of protecting your device.
Overall a great backpack for commuters and students. Not so good for day hikes (in terms of capacity for me), unless you are bringing a laptop. I am happy my wife forced me to replace my 21 year old NF pack. Hopefully the Recon will last just as long.

I bought this for a trip to Namibia. Although I haven't used it yet I can see that it has absolutely everything I need to accommodate a long plane ride and days of jeep travel. Could also carry a few books and electronics. And the color was perfect.

This backpack fits so much more stuff then I thought it would! I'm amazed by how much it will carry in both the main and front pocket! The only downside I could find in this backpack is that the padding on the back is very stiff, but it's not to bad if you're wearing it for a long time. Highly recommend this backpack!

My daughter uses this to carry many textbooks to her college classes. She also puts her laptop and iPad mini in the backpack with no issues with space or comfort.
