Living at a moderately high altitude we contend with snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the winter. Most people here wear “Patagonia” and “North Face” clothing. We own items from both of these brands and some other, so I feel I have good comps for this review. I am short, have an hourglass shape, a large bust and short waist; so I sometimes choose outdoor clothing from the men’s lines to avoid the tapering of women’s clothing which tends to land in weird areas on me. (A lot of outdoor brands are geared toward tall athletic builds and do not offer “petite” options.) I therefore purchased one coat for me and one for my husband. Our lifestyle here requires clothing able to withstand quickly changing mountain weather in work or play followed by a visit to town for an expensive dinner. We were looking for a down-free, very warm, water resistant and sturdy coat with good utility; that was also stylish enough to keep us feeling comfortable in all of these settings. This coat checks all the boxes! The coat looks pretty luxe and especially so with the faux fur lining on the hood. The fabric itself is sturdy enough to wear hiking and camping but has the appearance of a high end urban-style Patagonia parka. A big bonus for both of us was the abundance of pockets in varying sizes. This really helped tip the scales in favor of the Fjällräven over a Patagonia, as none of the Patagonia jackets we tried were nearly as serviceable in this area. We were further influenced by Fjällräven’s G-1000 fabric which can be waxed to help maintain the water-resistance, extending the life of the garment. In terms of environmental impact Fjällräven and Patagonia approach things with similar care and offer similar warranties. Overall we are glad with our purchase and will consider more from Fjällräven in the future!

This jacket was very well made and felt durable. It also had something I think all winter jackets need.... an abundance of good sized pockets. I think the brand may run a bit large though. I usually wear a large but this felt huge on me. I wanted to exchange it for a medium but its out of stock and I'm assuming no more will be coming in since the winter jacket sales season is ending now.

The Fjällräven Barents G1000 Parka, Men's size M and navy, is an incredibly well constructed, exceptionally warm, nice looking coat. As a premier reviewer, it was an amazing surprise on my doorstep. The coat can be waxed for water repellency and is heavy weight, quality fabric. There are two inside pockets, on with a snap and one zippered. I felt like goldilocks trying to find the right family member to be the lucky recipient. It was WAY too large for my 5'8" size small/med son. It was too small in girth yet a bit long for my normally size large 5"10" husband. It was nearly perfect for my 6' size medium son, however the arms were WAY too long for all of us. Either we are a family with freakishly short arms, or you have to have the arms of a yeti to make this work. My son flipped the sleeves up and that worked. Fortunately the fur is removable (a no-go for him). This coat will keep him warm like a yeti all winter. Now if we only get some snow!
