After much consideration I ordered the Black "Herschel Settlement Medium". I was a bit skeptical because they do not sell this one on the Herschel Supply website. But going back & forth between this and the mid-volume I'm happy I chose this one. The black is a nice dark canvas, and the measurements are correct so it's a smidge smaller than the Mid-volume. I wouldn't say this size would hold a lot of books in it without eventually breaking the zipper but it's perfect for light traveling. I'm not going to use the laptop portion for a laptop but it would fit a smaller laptop or a ipad. The zippers are some industrial size zippers but so far they are okay, we'll see if the reviews are right about the zipper issues. It's the perfect size for me since I didn't want a huge backpack when traveling on NYC subways. It's also not super tiny like those mini backpacks. The shoulder straps are sturdy & comfortable to wear on my back. Love the compartment for the ipod! Glad I check Zappos before buying the mid-volume. This is exactly what I was looking for. If you're looking for something sleek & simple go with this bag. As always Zappos shipments are super quick! Their customer service was amazing at helping me with the measurements & answering any questions I had about this product.

I will be using this backpack for college I am a 5'2" female and it fits great. The material protects the bag from getting dirty and the classic black color matches with every outfit. I was afraid that the bag would be too long in length but it is not. It fits me perfectly.

I love this backpack!! This was the perfect backpack now that I have "graduated" from using a diaper bag backpack for many years. I feel like a cool mom.

I've bought a Little America last year as travel bag and it's really impressive. Then I decided to buy another small but classic backpack from Herschel again. It's simple but with beautiful details, and the straps are really comfortable. It's perfect for daily use.

I am in love with this backpack. I just received it today and I really do love the design and the size of it. It really is comfortable and very cute for casual class days :). Recommended!

This is the perfect commuting bag. I've used a tote for years but I started to get chronic neck and shoulder pain from over filling it. I reluctantly decided to get a back pack. This one isn't bulky and is subtle.

Love how this backpack looks, but hoping it would be a little bigger or have a little more give. Good basic backpack if you don't have a lot to carry. I load it with my laptop, notebook and waterbottle and barely have room for my lunch, but have made it work! :)

I ordered this backpack in BLACK, and though it arrived in a plastic bag marked Black, the backpack was NAVY. I am returning the Navy bag and am requesting that you send me the BLACK backpack which I ordered.

Just like the Herschel shoulder bag I already own, but as a backpack. The bag I own has held up over more than five years of daily use, still looks new, so I expect their backpack will do the same.

This is a good looking, sturdy backpack, but I'm too small for it to be comfortable and so must return it with regret. I am 5'2" and a size 8, so the padded straps are uncomfortable for a long walk. When traveling I walk all day, sometimes 10+ miles, and even 3 miles will be too long with this backpack. In every other way it's perfect. Frustrating!

Love this bag!! I take this everyday to work and meetings and have gotten multiple compliments on it. My 13 inch laptop does not fit in the sleeve but it's not a big deal. Also I kind of understand the complaints about the zippers as they are not the smoothest but it's not enough of a problem for me to care. I think I will probably order in another color as well.

Perfect size. I bought this to make airline traveling a bit easier for me. It fits all the things in my purse plus my iPad, laptop, a few books plus a water bottle. It's great!

Perfect for my ferry/walking commute to work. Size is just what I wanted for my laptop and a few papers, and dress shoes if needed. Love the contrasting gold zippers, makes it a little more elegant than just all black I feel like.

All is perfect except the zippers!

Huge fan of this bag, had it for a few months now and very happy. Stylish, functional, not too big (I'm a 5' girl and it's a perfect fit) and can hold a 14" MacBook quite comfortably. I use this for work and professional travel. However I took one star off because that front pocket zipper could really use a redo. At first, it required two hands to get started and even then it was rough to pull across. Now, part of the zipper is stuck but that somehow made the whole thing easier to zip. It's a minor annoyance really and again doesn't detract from the look and functionality, but come on, Herschel, this could use another look.

For style and comfort I loved this bag but sadly I just cannot get it again. The first one I ordered in July 2015 and by October 2015 the zipper broke. I wrote Zappos and they were awesome about replacing the bag. My second one was great for a while but the zipper just broke again after 2 and 1/2 years. The rest of the backpack is in great shape and shows no sign of wear. I'm surprised nobody else has had that problem.
