Slick for Frye, primarily because of the leather's gloss. Great with short skirts and skinny jeans. A word of caution: not designed for a large calf girth, which works fine for me but won't for everyone.

So, here I am on my search odyssey, trying to find a good long boot, and this is Frye no 5. Yes, the heel slippage was just right (I am a medium to narrow 7.5 and 7 was a nice fit with thin socks), the side zip made it a tad easier to get them on and then...anyone who runs or does daily exercise, the ankles usually become narrow, and the calf girth exactly at the maximum thickness of the soleus muscle becomes thick, this is normal anatomy of a runner! But guess what, no one sent the memo to long-boot makers? Everything fits well but the calf is so tight, it's snug on even thin socks. I have 14.5-15" calves and it is darn near impossible to find a good long boot where I can tuck in my jodhpurs or breeches. Guess I will try again, or have to get custom shoes made. The sad part is, the shoe is so nice, it breaks your heart to send it back.

Great boots! Also, I ordered the wrong size and returning them for another pair was seamless. I highly recommend this vendor.

After sending back the Frye Shirley Riding boots because I found my calves swimming in them, I tried these. These boots are perfect for slimmer, longer legs. I am 5'8" with 13.5" calves and wear a size 7.5 and these babies fit like a glove with skinny jeans/jeggings and average thickness knee high socks. They are a little narrow in the foot bed but length-wise fit true to size. The overall style from the polished leather to the buckle placement is so classic. I love these boots!

I love these boots I just received them today and I am very impressed but you should order these boots one size larger than your normal size. They run narrow so I ordered a size 8 but I really need a 8.5 my usual size is 7.5. Classy and chic for work and casual wear.

Beautiful, gorgeous boots...could not fit over my runner's calves. Sadly these are being returned. Great service from Zappos, as usual.

Beautiful and comfortable - but the calves are too slim in the part that gets bigger if you run...they might be 15 inches at the top but definitely not in the widest part of regular calves. So sad these were my favorite of three Frye styles...also are on the narrow side of regular width, especially down at the toes, just fyi.

These are absolutely beautiful - simple yet gorgeous. However, I had to return them because I found the leather too stiff. They would take a long time to soften. I usually wear an 8.5 in shoes and 9 in boots. I ordered a 9 in these and could only wear them with thin socks.

I am really disappointed with these boots. They are very wide around the ankle and in the heel, so my foot feels like it is slipping in the back of the boot. Reviews made it sound like a trim fit and that is not the case. They feel bulky and unwieldy. I will likely return them, as they were too expensive to relegate to dog-walking.

So sad to have to return these. They are absolutely beautiful, and I desperately want some tailored-looking, dressy, Spanish-style riding boots. But unfortunately, the fit is off. I have tapered calves-- like the shape of the boot, they are curved up top near the knee, and then grow slimmer towards the ankle. These *just* fit me around the upper calf-- I'd be able to wear them with tights and maybe with the skinniest of skinny jeans, but I'd have liked a bit more adjustability at the upper buckles, so that I'd be able to get a nice tailored look with slim jeans tucked in. If only Frye had made these just a bit roomier. The fit in the middle of my calf down to my ankle had the opposite problem: too loose! At the mid-calf in particular they bunched awkwardly, the leather bowing outwards where it didn't hug my leg. And because the leather is so stiff, I think the boots would end up very creased very quickly in the areas in which the boots were loose and bunching. Yes, they are gorgeous and shiny boots but fresh out of the box they already had slight creases. I fear they won't age gracefully. Were they less, I'd live with the limitations and keep them; but for the cost, they had better be perfect. Unfortunately, they aren't.

Not worth the money. I have reviewed 2 other Frye boots - the Fey and Miranda back zip. I wanted a pair of black riding boots. For the price, these fall short. 1. Way too shiny. Like a shiny hunter rain boot. 2. Narrow foot bed. I could see my foot bones through the leather. 3. Too short. At 5'6", these hit mid-calf. Not tall enough to be slimming. I am astonished that these are this price. I have 4 other pairs of Fryes and I would not recommend these at all. I think the Shirley over the knee riding may be a better option if you are looking for a black riding boot. Very disappointing for Fryes.

Usually wear a size 6.5, so I ordered a size 7. They fit well enough in the toe box, and are a beautiful leather. However they were simply far too tight in the calf to wear over skinny jeans or really anything other than hose. My calf measures 14.5" but the boot feels like it is made for someone with 13 inch ankles or smaller. They also slip in the heel. For comparison, I also ordered a 6.5 Nine West Tiptop and a 7 Ariat Preston. The Ariat was the only one of the 3 boots that fit, but it had the scroungiest looking leather and is pretty blah. The Tiptop had surprisingly nice looking leather for the price, and if it had fit, would have been a great value. I really wish the Frye has worked. They are the most stylish and best looking leather of the three but unfortunately due to the too large heel and too small calf, they have to go back.
