Break in period is the hardest part about these things, but once that's over they keep getting better and better. I am new to the Birkenstock world. I like these shoes very much and I have a very hard time finding shoes for my very wide and unattractive feet. These have a nice support system and wiggle room for the toes. I find walking to be very easy going with these shoes.

These are exactly what you would expect from a Birkenstock shoe. The Birkenstock sole dictates the shape of the shoe - providing a big, wide toe box. Very comfortable.

I have plantar fasciitis and a bunion, and I love Birkenstock sandals (especially Gizeh - I have 3 pairs and live in them all summer long). I was looking forward to getting a winter pair of shoes. The Maine didn't work for me, however, because the heel slid too much, and the next size down cramps my toes. I had to return them, sadly.

These shoes are great, my first pair of Birkenstocks. At first they seemed rigid and hard like clogs or something, but after you wear them a few times they start to mold to your feet while giving you a good arch support. I also have wide feet and these accommodated!

I've had these shoes for about two months now, and the verdict is that they are a fantastic shoe! They have the same Birkenstock comfort that we all know (and love) and it manages to do it in a pretty good-looking way, versus other shoes like the Boston or London Birkenstocks. The toes do look a little funny (one of my friends likes to call them my "awkward toes") but it's still a pretty attractive shoe, suitable for many types of situations. I did have one concern when I initially bought them, however. I ordered a size 43 (American size 10), seeing as that was the size of my Arizonas which fit perfectly, but I noticed that my fourth toe kind of hit the part where the footbed met the upper material of those shoe (it kind of rested on the edge there). This caused a moderate amount of discomfort. I'm not sure if it was the added thickness of the socks or just the way that my foot sat in the shoe versus the way it sat in my Arizonas that cause it. Since then, I suppose I've gotten used to it and I had no more discomfort after two weeks or so of wearing the shoes. I find that the problem is alleviated somewhat if I don't wear socks, but that's kind of gross, and again, it's not much of a problem anymore. Once again, this is a superb shoe!

Like another reviewer, I found that the toe ridge is too far forward, so I had to send them back. I wear Arizonas and Bostons and have had other traditional shoes from Birkenstock in the past. The toe ridge in this one was unlike all the others I've worn. The suede was pretty but already whitened where it is glued to the cork on the sides of each shoe. Wish it would have worked, because I'd love a good Birk shoe. In fact, I wish they'd expand their line again.

These are nice shoes - light, re-solable and well built, except for one thing. The way the two pieces of leather overlap, the bottom piece has a fairly thick tab on it that goes the opposite direction from your foot sliding into the shoe. So every time I put them on, I had to dig in there and fix the tab of leather that was folded the wrong way against my foot. Then once the leather tab was fixed into the correct position, the thickness of it dug into my foot. For the love...

I am a new Birkenstock owner/lover - I have metatarsal pain, and my Birkenstock clogs are the only shoe I can wear that makes it feel like I have no problems. However, I ordered the same size in this shoe as my clogs, and I agree with the reviewer regarding the toe ridge being too far forward - otherwise they were extremely comfortable and supportive. Unfortunately that flaw makes it such that these shoes will not work for me.

I wanted to love these shoes so much. I really like the way they look and I have been a fan of Birkenstocks since I discovered them about six years ago. In fact, this purchase was my eighth pair that I bought. I should mention that prior, all other Birkenstocks did not have a back to them, which is to say they were all clogs whereas the Maine is more shoe-like. So I opened the box and they looked awesome and I was really excited to try them on. And that is where the fun ended. I tried to get my feet into them and they were so narrow that I could barely squeeze my feet in. And once they were in, there was just no way that I could walk in them. It would have been too painful. What a deflating moment that was. So I sent them back thanks to Zappos' amazing return policy. Anyway, I would like to think these Birkenstocks were incorrectly made or something; that I got a bad pair that slipped through the inspection line without being given the once-over. Because I just cannot imagine that this is the norm for this shoe. Every other Birkenstock that I have owned was as roomy and comfortable as can be. But these ones... Well, I guess I will have to try another pair on at shoe shop near where I live to see if it is my feet or the shoes that are messed up.
