This is a fantastic bag, with a few drawbacks. Pros: It’s just the right size my daily use as a teacher (I regularly carry a small laptop, a 1” binder, a few books, a water bottle, and writing utensils). Classic, simple styling means I know I won’t be sick of it mid-year, especially in a neutral color like the light gray. The padded shoulder straps are nice. The front pocket holds a surprising amount - I use this for my phone/wallet/keys, which removes the need to also carry a purse. Cons: No side pocket for water bottle. Single zipper pull, which also sticks a bit. I have to zip slowly for it to open smoothly, and I’d much prefer two zipper pulls that could meet in the middle. For me, the pros outweighed the cons. I kept this and have used it happily so far this school year. I suspect based on the quality it will hold up over time.

This is a beautiful backpack. I purchased it for my middle schooler. One big issue though - no water bottle holder. For school, the outside pocket to hold a water bottle makes a big difference. That's the only flaw.

I ordered the dark camo one for commuting to work (walking). The style is on point - it's not too bright and it's kind of a more subtle dark gray camo which is exactly what I wanted - not too loud else I'd get sick of looking at it every day! It fits my very large macbook pro (15 inch) and a pair of shoes etc. if I'm working out after work. I knocked off a star for the zipper that doesn't move as smoothly as it could and I worry about it breaking though. However, the gold detail does make it super cute :)

I've only been using this a few days but it is a pretty solid backpack. It can carry my 13" laptop, a binder, a 5 subject notebook, planner, water bottle, and my glasses case, so it really can fit quite a lot without looking like a turtle shell on your back. My only complaint would be that there's only one zipper for the large opening and it is a little stiff, not a huge thing. Overall a good backpack, we'll see how long it lasts.

Love the color and style of this backpack! After a couple of months the zipper on the outside fell apart and I wasn’t able to use it anymore.

I absolutely adore this backpack. I originally purchased it for a trip to Europe (not backpacking! just wanted something in addition to my carry-on) and it was perfect. It is SO cute, and honestly could be used for unisex. My boyfriend used a bigger backpack, but this was perfect for me. There is a ton of room in the backpack, as well as a big storage pocket that would be best used for shoes/laptops, and a pocket in the front for some smaller organization. I did like that it had a built in, attached key ring clip so I could hold my suitcase key in there. The straps on the backpack were cushioned and comfortable. The only cons I would point out are that I wish it did have a few more storage pockets on the front inside of the main storage compartment. Additionally, the zippers are a little hard to work with - but if you're using the backpack on a trip like I was, I think that's actually a plus so that you don't get pick-pocketed easily! At the end of the day, yes I would recommend this. I just hope Herschel puts out another version of this size but with more pockets! :)

Great size, not too big and not too small! Haven't had a problem with the zippers yet. The only thing I would change is the laptop pocket is not very tight and has no padding, but overall a great bag.

I love the Settlement bag from Herschel Supply Co. My work is contingent on being able to reliably have everything I need at hand at a moment's notice, and with this bag, it never takes me more than a couple of seconds to have whatever I need in hand. The design is no-nonsense, composed of three separate areas for your things, keeping things uncomplicated. The only issue I experienced with the bag was one of the teeth breaking out of place, causing the bag not to close all the way. But Zappos quickly rectified the issue, and now I'm happily rocking my efficient, stylish Settlement bag on my commute every day.

Love how sleek and low profile this bag is. Made the transition from a tote for commuting and traveling for work and really prefer it. It's so easy to slide my laptop in and out and the bag has just the right amount of room that I need to keep all my stuff organized.

I received the version with the black color way with a white front pocket. Overall, the backpack looks good for school. Take note that some of the backpack version have one or two zippers for the main compartment. The zippers feel rough at first but it is starting to loosen up and I guess it's more safer if anyone has ideas of opening it. Only complaint I guess is wanting more pockets and maybe a place for my water bottle. One last thing, the pocket to hold a music player or phone is badly placed on the side inside he backpack. I fear my books and binders are going to hit it too much.

This backpack is super cute and stylish! Five stars for how it looks, love it, especially the red and white pinstripes inside. The material is decent, but could be better for this price. The back padding and laptop sleeve could be a bit thicker. The straps can get pretty uncomfortable with a heavy load, so not the best If you have to carry a lot of textbooks in it. Also, the shape of it becomes less flattering. But if you are not carrying a lot of heavy stuff, it is comfortable and still maintains its shape. My only complaint about this bag is the zipper. I have had this bag for a year and the zipper does not work anymore. Rain and humidity ruins it really quickly.

Got the smaller version of this bag but was too small for my day trips to NYC. Zappos return policy is awesome! Free shipping return and very fast in shipping of delivery item. Better than Nordstrom! Only rated 4 stars because the zipper at times is a struggle and will get caught and due to the material I tend to scratch myself on it when in confined spaces like airplanes. And from another commenter I've read it is really unusual for having only 1 zipper enclosure; unable to tie the ends for safety with travel. Very chic though and comfortable straps on your shoulders. Definitely a must have.

I loved this bag when I bought it, being I had this bag for almost a year I thought it was a good time to review it. Cons: The side seam near the right strap split open. The bag is still usable but it's frayed The zipper gets caught at times. Pros: This is a handsome bag. Nice pin striped lining. Inconspicuous. After the bag ripped I thought it was done for but it's still hanging in there. Would I buy another Herschel, probably not, but I do like the design nor the quality.

This is a beautiful backpack, the color combination and lining look very good and attract compliments. The only downsides are that the padding for the laptop compartment is very thin and that it lacks interior pockets.

I purchased this in rust and it is so pretty. It is like a faded brick red color. It has very comfortable straps, especially when you need to carry heavy things inside. The material of the fabric is sturdy, durable. It seems like it can last long. The design was my main reason for purchasing. It has a clean, simple, classic design. The zipper is horrible, honestly. It does not zipper up smoothly. Mine actually does not close sometimes. I would have to spend some time trying to get the bag to close properly without later finding my bag opened up. I was hoping for the bag to be smaller. Even with a laptop inside, I find it very roomy, but not in a good way. It is too tall if that is the correct word to use. I wish there were more internal pockets! Overall, I am pleasantly satisfied with my purchase. But, I would not purchase another.

I got this bag in black and I love it! I use it for school and it fits all my books. It is simple but the zipper makes it very classy.

I purchased the grey Herschel Settlement bag for a carry-on. Considering its size, it fits quite a lot. I wish that the laptop sleeve had more padding. The larger zipper has a tendency to get stuck, but it's nothing a bit of wax can't fix.

Good looking. But odor coming from synthetic materials is not so great.

This is an excellent, well-constructed backpack. However, I am returning it because it is too big for my 5'3" frame and the color is significantly darker than shown on the website. If they made the smaller version in this color, I would have exchanged for that. Unfortunately, they're very limited on the mid-size bags.

I loved this backpack. I've heard great things about it, and almost a year ago I purchased it. Now having had it for 10+ months, while it is a stylish backpack, I'm afraid I'm going to have to exchange it for another brand. Yes, it does have a laptop insert but personally, it doesn't have a lot of room for my books as a college student. Of course, what you put into you backpack varies from person to person, but I don't only stuff books in there, I try to stuff my water bottle, lunch, jackets, and what not. While it does fit, it doesn't feel comfortable on my shoulders. It has been sturdy enough for all the days I've used it, but I don't think it's comfortable carrying it on your shoulders when you pack a lot of items you need into it.

This is a great looking backpack inside and out. The zippers, however, are stubborn and stiff, resulting in a good bit of effort to open and close. It's not enough of a con to return the bag, but I hope the makers will take note and correct the issue. Personally, I think their packs are the best looking I've seen.

Light weight yet nice and sturdy. Zippers seem made to last. Bought the orange and the color is lovely. The laptop pocket is not really padded, in case you are concerned about protection. I wish it had an interior pocket.

Well, I've gotta say, this is a great backpack. I love it for the simple design. The black with gold zippers is awesome, and the pink pinstriped interior just sets it off. The interior is definitely what did it for me. It also appears to be durable. I've had mine for a couple of months now and I've had very little trouble with the zippers, like others have said, and have had no issues with the material of the bag itself. Honestly, I don't feel like this backpack is quite worth the dollars that I paid for it (just because it seems a little steep for such a simple design/materials), but it is great overall. And if you are going for look (like I was) then you will not be disappointed.

These are perfect for school! You can fit three binders and two textbooks nicely but it does lack organizational pockets. The zipper gets stuck or sticks occasionally.
