I bought these for my husband so he would be able to work out in them and also be on the go. We love how quickly they dry, but would prefer the material give a little more and have some stretch to it. It is also really good for traveling because they pack light and you can launder and it dries quickly as with all Columbia products.

The belt buckle is almost half the size of my last pair and the construction is thinner and cheaper. Worst of all, the buckle is hard to use. The old one was much better. I swapped the new one out for the old one luckily.
The stitching on the new pair (made in Bangladesh) is clearly not as robust as my previous pair (made in Vietnam). There's considerably less stitching and the thread is thinner.
Frankly, I can't see where Columbia has made this new pair better, it's just made more cheaply. I expected better quality, not less.

Had to purchase several cargo shorts online since item size is not in store.
First issue: Selected chart color is way lighter or darker than true color.
In store shades are totally different .
Second: Button holes are all smaller than button. Had to make a small cut just to undo buttons.
Kind of disappointed !!!!
So you just have to wait and be surprised !!!!

These shorts perform great, but I am a very average sized male and these tend to have narrow legs and bunch in the junk area a bit. Fine for everyday wear, but the bunching can get annoying on active summer hikes or wet wading a stream.

The previous style the Silver Ridge 1 shorts were much better quality and had more practical pockets. This new version deletes the hidden zippered hip-pocket and makes all the pockets shallow. You will never put anything bulkier than paper money (like 2 or 3 bills) in the zippered cargo pocket because it makes the pocket and leg sag and flap about when walking so hence there is "practically" no zippered pockets on these that you can use properly and the back Velcro pockets barely employ any amount of Velcro to be secure. I also found the nylon fabric to be less firm and more flimsy on this version of these once classic shorts.
I'd also recommend:

Disappointed. I have to agree with other revues posted that the Silver Ridge Cargo pant is not up to the expectation of Columbia.
1) The Velcro (small strips) holding the pockets together is very small, and does not secure the pockets tightly....my cell phone fell out of the right hand cargo pocket, because of the weak/small amount of Velcro.
2) The front cargo pockets "flop" with every stride I make while approaching or climbing. Would be nice if they were a part of the pants, rather than a loose pocket of its own. Very annoying. Too much "flapping" of the legs with each stride.
3) The left hand pocket has a zipper and this is nice, and does hold items securely. Not so with the right cargo pocket.....barely any holding power.
4) The same with the rear pockets. Will not secure a wallet or anything sizable or bulky.
5) The two front pockets are very "shallow" and will allow anything to slip out...even with the small minimal Velcro strip that is in place.
But the fit, and comfort is very nice and wears well, with quick drying properties.
The biggest drawback is the "flapping of the legs" cargo pockets, with small Velcro strips. Annoying.
If both cargo pockets had zippers/or full Velcro closure and were a part of the pant legs they would be wonderful.
Consider zippers on the two rear pockets, or at least a full Velcro strip for total closure.

Shorts are good quality, but the fit was not for me. I have worn the older Silver Ridge shorts for a few years and they fit me well. I could not find the correct size with the newer shorts. I am 6'1'' and weigh 165 lbs. and wore the medium longs (12in. inseam) in the older shorts: I usually wear a 32 waist in all shorts and pants. Theses current shorts fit small in the legs. I ordered a 32 waist and it was perfect, but the legs felt tight; putting my hands into the pockets was a really tight squeeze. Sitting down was uncomfortabIe. I don't have muscle bound legs--I am pretty lean--so the lack of space was surprising. I returned the shorts with no issues, and got the 34 waist. The waist was huge on me, but the constricted leg issue from before was gone (a belt was no good to help the waist: too much fabric to gather). Returned those too. Unfortunately, the sizing was just a poor fit for me.

These shrunk from 38" to 37" waist size after washing in cold water. Sent back a larger size thinking the next size down would work perfectly. Didn't happen! Should have kept the larger size.

I have worn these for several years now - on the 2014 version Columbia eliminated the extra zipper security pocket on the right side and added a zipper to the existing left front cargo pocket. The former shorts actually had a "double" side pocket, the zipper allowed you to secure keys or money clip etc. with no fear of losing them whether hiking or on an airplane. Also the items rode on the side of the leg, whereas if you are hiking anything in the front cargo zipper pocket bangs on your leg. I guess this was a move to save money.
This is the one reason I buy Columbia over Under Armor, North Face etc. - I liked the security of the zipper side pocket. I hope for 2015 they will bring this back.

The design is great and the fabric dries quick. The size is not true to size. I wear 34s but these shorts are extremely small. Get one or even two sizes bigger.

Have to return as the size doesn't work. Don't think moving to a larger size will help. Like the quality.

I bought these same shorts in the Outlet stores and they were $5.00 or a little more less in cost, yet you can never find the color even though the outlet store says they will get themand I made like 7 trips.
The two I got online and shipped to me albeit the same shorts had a design difference. The front pockets on the ordered shorts were better and seemed normal whereas the pockets on the Outlet store shorts were shorter and I am now of the belief that the Outlet shorts are a defect and while not being sold as such are actually seconds/defect products. It is also difficult to get them in sizing that this company offers like you can never find the 10 inch length although it is offered.

I guess I didn't read the product description well enough. The material is 100% synthetic. It doesn't breathe and gets hot when it's hot out. The pockets are shallow and make me worry about things falling out of them when I sit down.
The shortest inseam is 10" and that still touches the knee of this 6' guy - this is important when I am ascending slickrock. I don't like to be restricted in my movements while "going up".
I wouldn't buy them again.

These shorts are not loose fitting. Tight around the thighs, rear end, and front. Waist was fine, so size was not the issue. Needs deeper pockets, too. I really like the material and overall feel......the cut is just too fitted, felt constricted. I am returning them.

The built in belt is nice but they seem a bit constricting. Got this in the same size as the others and it is a noticeably tighter fit.

Have been wearing your cargo shorts for 20+ yrs--size 36. My recent purchases moved up to size 38 bc I put on about 2 lbs in the past 14 months. I was surprised when my cargo shorts arrived ; for a size 38, the two styles of cargo shorts were as tight around the waist as my older size 36 cargo shorts. I found the cut of the shorts were on the skimpy side as well. Very Disappointed in the two styles! of cargo shorts I purchased. First Time, in all the years I have purchased and worn your product, that I am so disappointed!
Will return the purchases.

Within one year, the zipper was broken or the zipper fabric split. This happened on both pair of shorts purchased in 2018. However, I have just purchased 4 pair of the shorts, hoping that the zipper problem has been corrected.
