I'm not a barefoot runner but have evolved into more of a minimalist. I was looking for a trail shoe to rotate with my New Balance MT101s and my Minimus MT10s. I wanted a shoe that would be comfortable for longer runs and for days my feet just needed a break. What I found with the Merrell Mix Master 2 was a shoe that could do it all. It's light enough for shorter, faster runs but protective and comfortable enough for the long haul. The ride is soft and forgiving for a shoe of this low profile but definitely not mushy. I can't say enough about the rounded toe box. It's roomy but not sloppy, especially for my pinkie toe that rubs in many other shoes. The lugs are aggressive enough for technical terrain, loose gravel or muddy conditions yet are still comfortable for hard packed dirt. The overall fit is snug enough to lock in your foot on uneven surfaces yet not restrictive. I would be comfortable using this shoe for any distance on the gnarliest of trails. I've already been using them on my favorite local trails but can't wait to get them on the single track Ice Age Trails nearby. Simply put, this is the best trail running shoe I've ever worn and I've tried many since I first discovered the Mudroc 290 years ago. The only modification I would like to see in future models is that the last be a tad wider at the arch for added support on longer runs. Great job Merrell. I hope this shoe is around for a long time.

I NEVER review items, but this one deserves a review. I bought these shoes last minute before heading to Istanbul Turkey for 10 days, and I knew I would be walking a lot. These shoes are so comfy out of the box, very stylish with jeans or casual dress pants. I walked for miles and miles, up and down the hills of Istanbul sightseeing. Anyone who travels knows how much you walk and these shoes were the best shoe experience I have ever had. The only downfall I did notice, and someone else commented on this, when I was walking on marble sidewalks and slabs in Istanbul, the shoes were slippery. I would be a bit hesitant to wear these mountain hiking, but that does not happen in South Georgia where I live. But for amazing comfort, great room in the toes, these are the way to go. They fit perfectly as sized! You can't make a better purchase and again Zappos, you are the best site on the planet. If the healthcare.gov would have used your web design, it would have been flawless!

I like these shoes; very light, comfortable, cool, with decent support. I used them right out of the box for five days of walking around Disney World and they were great.

Wore these at the Leadville Trail 100 mile run this year and they did the trick. Was looking for something with a wide toe box and moderate drop, and this toe box was even wider than Altras. Not sure how long they'll hold up in demanding environments like that...feels like the 60+ miles at lt100 really beat them up. I also wore the NB Leadville 1210s, and have tried all of the other hipster ultra running shoes. These are not the most attractive, or the coolest.

Took them for a 4 mile trail run and they were every bit of what I was hoping for; light, aggressive, and no play in the toe box. Size was perfect and they performed excellent since. Nice shoe Merrell, I hope you don't discontinue these.

Very lightweight, very comfortable. Would highly recommend - very happy with this pair of shoes. Seem reasonably durable too - good all-around shoe.

These sneaks are great! Super comfortable and they are completely breathable. My feet stay cool and they have good support. I highly recommend these.

Finally, a shoe that combines all the elements of minimalist shoes (lightweight and breathable) while still maintaining some cushioning and support. I like the road feel, didn't make me feel like I was running on unstable pillows like most super inflated running shoes with a large drop, but also didn't feel like the true barefoot shoe which I could never quite handle, especially on trails. Always liked Merrell's hiking shoes, glad I checked these out for running too.

Another great shoe from Merrell. Very lightweight and already broke in like every shoe I've ever bought from Merrell. 6 star quality.

I really like these shoes; they are light-weight, yet sturdy and very, very comfortable. Personally, I like the look as well, although my boys think I look at bit feminine. Obviously, I disregard everything they say!

I read this was a good trail running shoe and it doesn't disappoint! It's almost as comfortable as Altra's on pavement but really shines off-road. I competed in an obstacle 5K with them recently and was very pleased with their performance. Grippy with enough sole to protect your feet while not giving too much support.

I bought these woes because they are the exact shoes that I bought at a store, and they are the only ones I've worn at step class that don't require me to wear a brace on my bad ankle. Ironically, they have almost no support. Apparently, that was good for me. The material was slightly different from the original shoe I bought. I don't know if that's good or bad.

Extremely comfortable, 'lean' sneaker. Fits great under jeans - not like those bulky cross trainers, other standard sneakers. True to size. Having bad arthritis - I need comfortable sneakers that don't feel too constraining. Trying on other sneakers - then these - it's night and day. So comfortable. Look forward to putting on daily. Have to also suggest the Merrell Rally Moc - as a great everyday casual shoe. Same comfort level - great walking shoe.

Love this shoe! I’m also into the Glove series – but for the gnarly trails, the Mix Master II is the ticket! Size 12 fits me a bit longer than my Gloves, but not overly. Nice roomy toe box and secure in the heel. Perfect for the long haul. The sole is flexible and light, yet provides just enough ground feel to keep the senses reactive. My MT110’s went into the trash after running in these. Great looking shoe too!

Buyers beware: The smoke/anodized gold Merrell mix master, is not the Merrell mix master 2, the uppers are different (fabric is not the same). First version had some ripping problems and was retired by Merrell in order to fix the durability issues. This new mix master 2 has solved that. You can trust the Grey/Scarlet and Parrot as true Mix Master 2.

I use these shoes as everyday walkers when the weather is warm. They are very light and breathable. I find they make great travel shoes as well since they pack down small and have a simple look about them that is not overly flashy like some running shoes. I have run in them occasionally - when traveling but I generally stick to my more supportive Asics most of the time. That said, I never had any issues running in them and feel comfortable that I could run in them more often if necessary. The main reason I've avoided it is really because the light tread on the sole has worn pretty quickly and I am reluctant to use them for more running as a result. I do like these Mix Masters quite a bit, especially as a general purpose sneaker, and do recommend them. However, going to give them 4 stars just for the quick wearing soles.

I was looking for a shoe with better protection than my barefoots. These do the trick wonderfully. Nice look, feel and protection. My only complaint is the tongue. No problems with is being sewn to the shoe, i like that, but it is a short tongue. Hasn't caused problems, but worry shifting may cause irritation. that's the only reason for the 4 star overall...

I bought these shoes for my hubby for his birthday. He has really hard to fit feet and is super skeptical of buying shoes on the Internet. But he absolutely loves them. He'll never admit it but he hasn't taken them off since he got them.

The width is good, but the toe box extends too far. Sacrifice width by sizing down or risk catching toe nails on the bumper, a tendency that was exacerbated by poor heel retention. I experienced considerable rubbing on the outside of each heel and had to treat open blisters in those spots after several hours. The soles slip on wet rock. This is a poor shoe choice for a trail ultra.
