I use this product for paddling and hiking to keep the sun and rain off my head and face. Warm inner layer to help keep body heat in.

If you can set aside your pride long enough to test drive the Seattle sombrero you will be a happy camper. It's my "Dad Hat" and i am mocked by everyone I know under 30 years old. That said if you don't care you will love it. Small points of improvements: the brim gets bent out of shape if you pack it a lot so it gets a little frumpy but if you cared that it looks frumpy you would not have bought it in the first place

I bought this hat because I guide cold environments with lots of sun and areas that receive enough rain to be considered rain forests. I received the hat before being in the field for almost 20 days. During that time it rained all but 3 days Many times I didn't need to pull out my rain jacket because the hat was doing it's job keeping the rain off my shoulders and out of my face. I slept in the hat under m y tarp, it kept mosquito netting off my face and my head warm. It;s been dropped in the mud, tied to a harness, stuffed in a pack and strapped to handlebars. The hat is still in perfect shape begging for more abuse......it's gonna get it too.

This is my 2nd hat of this kind. Hat#2 matches my sons baseball team colours :) Very waterproof, but I use it for sun protection too while watching ball games. Keeps my head dry when fishing and stays on with the chin strap. Lots of great colour combos to choose from. Love these hats!!

Love this hat. It's Gore-Tex, so it's waterproof. The brim is wide enough so that it sheds the water away from your face. It's a nice option when an umbrella is not an option (in a crowd, in a canoe, in the woods, etc.). The medium fit me just fine (I'm 22" circumference), but do measure around your head and heed the sizes and measurements when deciding what size to order. There is a hook and loop at the inside back for making slight size adjustments, and it has hook and loop tabs on the brim for turning up the sides. There's a removable chin strap, too. It's nice looking, and does the job. It also smashes flat for packing in a suitcase or rolls up for carrying in a pocket or backpack.

A coworker recommended it to me because he has had the version without the earflaps for years. He tried this one out and wishes the had the flaps. I have only had this had for 3 months, but so far, I love it. I work outside and in the rain quite often and the noise and reduced visibility of hoods annoys me. No longer need the hood. I cannot recommend this hat enough.

Great hat. Looks good and did what I needed it to. It's lightweight and keeps the hot sun out. It's packable, but doesn't loose its shape.

It stays in my golf bag. This is the best rain hat that I have ever owned. It has great adjustability and stays on in the wind, too. Water does not run down the back of your neck when addressing the golf ball because the back bill is long enough to shed water to back of your rain jacket.
I'd also recommend:
Merrell water proof sport shoes.

I seldom write reviews but I was so impressed by the Seattle Sombrero that I felt compelled to praise this product. In Feb 2016 we hiked the Milford Track in New Zealand. It rained solid for two of the days (> 12 inches total) but our heads were consistently warm and dry. We were much drier than our fellow hikers. The Seattle Sombrero was the best piece of gear that I bought for this trip. Thanks for making a great product.

I have owned my Green Seattle Sombrero for a decade, and it's my go-to hat for rainy season in the highlands of Peru, where I am doing volunteer work. It is waterproof, but a bit floppy for windy days. Still, for its purpose, it works well, keeping my head from getting wet. Machine-washability is nice, as is the fact that it rolls up in my backpack when I don't need it. Speaking of longevity, having this hat for over a decade, in rain, snow, and sun, the Seattle Sombrero is exceptional. For sunny days, I switch to the Papyrus or Sombriolet, because the Seattle doesn't breathe as well.

I have seen these on many other people and decided to try on out. Shortly after my purchase I had a 8 mile hike planned and the weather forecast was for 1 to 2 inches of rain. I thought this a good time to test the Sombrero. A tough 8 mile hike while wearing a Goretex hooded jacket would cause anyone to get wet inside or out. Everyone else in the group were tightly bundled up with their Goretex hoods cinched down tight and I had on my Sombrero, my head and neck open to the air. The first 1/2 mile had 2000 ft elevation gain and everyone other than me were sweating and wet on the insides of their hooded jackets. No me, I was venting heat just fine in my new hat. It kept all rain off my head , face and neck. All in all a great hat.

I've had the Snoqualmie Sombrero for about 4 months. At first I thought it might look kind of dorky, but after wearing it in snowy, windy and rainy conditions I would say this is one of the best investments I've made in my outdoor gear. It keeps the rain off your head while not impairing your peripheral vision like the hood of your jacket does. The ear flaps are great when it is cold and windy. It might be too warm for summer hiking, but for winter hiking or hiking in the rain, it will always be with me.

I bought this for the afternoon monsoons in the southern rockies during the summer when I'm backpacking. It works amazing when it's raining and the fleece lining is fabulous in the cool mornings. However, the fleece lining makes it nearly unbearable to wear when it's hot out (but that isn't the weather it was made for either). If you live where it's cool and rainy on a regular basis you would be silly not to own one!

Can't usually stand wearing a hat. However, I am an outdoor instructor and need sun protection, with all-elements protection for my stunning, he-man hairdo. After using ratty free lids, then going for higher-tech caps, I decided to give this a try. I could not be happier with the hat. Unknown to me, there is a hidden adjuster inside the brim that compensates for hair volume and skull swelling in hot conditions. The thing wicks moisture away from underneath, and the outer fabric is totally waterproof. It smashes into a day hatch or pack and comes out looking fine. The under-brim area is non-reflective and makes working on the water, in high-sun, easier on the eyes. the retainer cord stashes up inside when not needed, and can be untied easily. Just wish this was made as a surfing hat also with a heavy chin strap, but I am content, finally finding a lid I can live with.

I recently took this hat on a kayaking trip to New Zealand. It packed great and did a phenomenal job shielding some intense rays and making it possible to see where I was paddling in sheets of rain. I loved the Velcro option for the intermittent sunshine to give me better peripheral vision on the water. This is quite possibly one of my favorite paddling companions. I don't care too much about appearances on the water, but it is pretty cute!

I am willing to pay good money for a good hat. I am a boater and hiker and those hobbies demand a good hat. Well, because of the Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero, the Tilly hats are relegated to the back of the closet. The Gore Tex, the warm inner lining, the ability to change the style of the hat with the velcro tabs for the brim, the chin strap for a windy day, it is just a plain awesome hat. You can scrunch it up and it returns to a great looking hat. I liked mine SO much I bought one for my wife and she does not go out without it.

quite simply this is the best hat I have ever seen. It sounds strange when I tell people how much I love my hat. it is waterproof. it provides sun protection. it floats. I can horribly cram it into a pack for travel without any lasting harm. and of course I look absolutely dashing in it. it is a hat, but I have no complaints at all which I can not say about any of my other gear. again I feel stupid saying it but this is one of my I can't do without it items

I refer to it as my heavy downpour hat. Ever have that clothing/foot wear, that they clamed is "waterproof"- then after twenty minutes it's NOT! You know the hats where you start to get that drip down the side of your temple. This hat lasts hours before that happens!

A fantastic hat which was hard to get a couple of years ago since there was no dealer in Germany at that time. Meanwhile my wife owns this hat as well and we enjoy dry heads and faces while hikling in the rain.

I use this hat pretty constantly. I finally bought one last year, with my REI dividend, after wanting one for so long. I have a tendency to beatdown gear so I remained somewhat cynical about my purchase. But it has being a beautiful peice of gear! It provides shade in the high country of NC and then quickly protects from a blinding thunderstorm. Thats when you got to go flaps down! And I noticed during a summer downpour my rainjacket, no matter how breathable, would still get sauna-like in the hood. But the Sombrero provides equal rain protection with more breathability. Finally, there is a size adjuster in the hat so fitting is a breeze!
