Don't let my Newport Beach location fool you; I was born in Iceland and I ordered these in preparation for a trip to Reykjavik. Although it was tough to decide, I ended up buying The North Face McMurdo boot instead and sending these back. STYLE: These boots are really nice looking which are their best feature. They are sleek, make your foot look small (no clown feet here) and definitely have a feminine look - which is quite a feat when dealing with functional hiking boots. Because the toe box is narrow and the laces are cute, these look great even when your ski pants and/or bootcut jeans cover the top of the shoe which is a definite plus. COMFORT: I have regular feet in a regular width. I have no bunions or any other issues with my feet, and I agree with the reviewer who said that the toe-box is narrow on these shoes. I normally wear a size 8 or 8½ and I ordered these in a 9. I tried them on with thick WigWam socks and they pushed in a little on my toes as I walked around the house - which worried me. These are extremely lightweight. I can't verify their warmth, but The North Face McMurdo boot definitely felt much warmer. Each Merrell boot weighs 1.2 pounds vs. the 1.7 for each McMurdo boot, but the McMurdo is just a much more substantial boot (hence the extra weight is worth it). The sole of the Merrell felt narrow enough that I didn't feel as "sure-footed" in these, almost as if my foot inside the shoe was rolling a little over the side's edges - just a smidgen but again, enough for worry. OTHER SPECS: This shoe has a nice 2 inch heel (lug) which is great if you tend to feel "frumpy" when wearing athletic clothes like I do. But The North Face McMurdo also has a nice 2-inch heel and it just felt like a much more solid, stable and warm boot. The Merrells would make cute, lightweight hiking boots - felt much more like high top sneakers than a solid durable cold weather hiking boot. The height of the Merrell boot measured from the heel up is about 6½ inches vs. 8 inches for the McMurdo (less boot = less weight). The shoelaces are adorable, but you can always buy cute colored shoelaces for any boot you purchase. I intend to buy cute colored laces for my Black/Pumice Grey North Face boots to give them more of a feminine feel and to match my ski jacket (LOL). Bottom line - with the free shipping both ways, you have nothing to lose by ordering a few different boots from Zappos and trying them on at home. Hope this was helpful!

Love these boots! Ordered an 8 when I'm usually a 7.5 just because they're winter boots and I wanted extra space for thick socks. I'm glad I ordered an 8, they fit perfectly. Stayed warm throughout the hunting season and were nice and light weight for walking out to the tree stand. Can't wait to use them for snow shoeing, they're so light and warm I'm sure they'll be awesome. Highly recommend spending the money to get this quality product!

I love these boots! I read the reviews about the color but I really like it. I am glad they are not so white. Very pale grey, pretty color. Very comfortable. Great on ice, not just snow.

Great boots but not waterproof! I love these boots except for one aspect: They are advertised as waterproof but they are not, and given the price they really ought to advertise truthfully or make them truly waterproof. I bought these for my Winter boots where I work (Afghanistan). At first they were awesome, super warm, great support, fantastic grip (a must have here, especially in Winter) and stylish on top of all that. Then the first snows came. Walking through low snow in these my feet quickly got ice cold, and after having to navigate a few slushy puddles (none too deep) the boots quickly got wet. Unfortunately they were the only boots I had here, and I had no choice but to keep wearing them until I could order a better pair. For a week I was walking around in semi-moist, cold boots. I would chalk it up to the environment I'm in but...these are expensive, and they are advertised as waterproof. These are probably great boots for cold weather hiking, just not if you anticipate any moderate exposure to water, snow or slush. I still love them, but because they are not waterproof I was forced to order another pair to wear for most of Winter. For that, I have to give them 2 stars overall, and 3 stars for comfort. Sorry, Merrell. Most reviewers state these boots run small. I normally wear a 9.5 but ordered a 10 for that reason. I probably could've worn the 9.5, as even with thick socks these are a bit clunky (but still wearable) on me. So the "runs small" may apply more to the smaller sizes than those that are size 9 and up.

I never write reviews but, I had to chime in for these Merrell's. I have been looking for boots to use hiking in the White Mt of New Hampshire for some time. I have wide feet and did not want to invest in mountaineering boots until I was confident I would use them. I usually wear a size 8 Merrell boot but I have a wide foot. So, normally, I rely on the sideways give of the boot. This boot is solid plastic at the base and so I ordered a size 9 to get the right fit. What made me want to write a review is that I wore them out of the box for an almost 11 miles hike with microspikes and snow shoes. They felt so light! They were TOTALLY comfortable for the whole time! Because of my wide feet, I only wore my regular fall weight socks. But, in addition to being comfortable, my feet were super dry all day! At one point my toes were a smidge nippy but, never to any real degree. Because my feet are so wide and I cannot really get thicker socks in there, I will likely not wear these shoes for hiking in the single digits but, they are a great light weight, dry, comfortable option for those winter days in the 20s or up.

I assume this is what normal people feel like when they walk! I have had many major surgeries on my feet / legs, and walking has been the most difficult thing for me! I have some Merrell slip-ons, but I cannot really walk my dog in those (in Minnesota winter), so I ordered these hoping for comfort, and they definitely came through! I just walked four miles in the snow, without stopping, and I have no pain! It is the first time in five years that I can claim this! I did order half a size larger, as directed by other reviewers, and I am happy I did! They are amazing!

Based on other reviews, I ordered this shoe a half size larger than I usually wear in Merrell shoes, unfortunately they were still too small. I would need a full size larger.

This boot keeps your feet toasty. My foot is narrow so the extra thermal padding helps with fit.

These boots are amazing! I live in the Pacific Northwest. I take them hiking in the rain (and subsequent mud) and in the snow. My most recent trip was in the mountains in 15 degree weather hiking in snow. My feet were nice and warm. I didn't even feel a hint of cold. Very sturdy, great traction, comfortable, and warm. I ordered a half size bigger than I normally wear. It seems to be the case with my other Merrells too. I'm usually an 8, and got an 8 1/2. Fits great, even with a thicker sock.

These shoes are comfortable, warm, and very functional shoes. I had been searching for a boot for awhile that was stylish and practical. This shoe completely fit. I get compliments when I wear them out, and in cold weather, my feet are nice and toasty!

Excellent boots. Have already used these for hiking in the snow (and some mud) for several miles. They kept my feet comfortable, dry and warm. They have a good amount of grip, but I still had to be careful on ice. I noticed that they seem to run smaller in size, so I suggest ordering a full size larger then you normally wear, especially if you are going to wear thick socks with them.

Excellent hiking boots. Lightweight, yet sturdy. Plush polartec type lining on inside. Nice and wide to fit thick socks. These run a half-size small. I am a true 9.5 and could not walk in a 9.5. Re-ordering a 10 seems to do the trick.

I have not tested these boots outdoors yet. I got 7, my normal size. There is plenty of room for bulkier socks than my thick smart wools. I want boots that are good for snowshoeing and hiking. Conditions are muddy here, not enough snow for 'shoeing. The tops seem quite stiff, that was remedied by loosening laces at the top.

Not much padding and too lightweight for any real hiking. Probably okay for going on a 1 mile walk in your neighborhood, but not much more.

I wear 5.5, ordered a 6. With thick socks, the fit is perfect. Love these boots. And with the fast overnight shipping, the boots will come in handy for snow in the forecast.

Awesome boot. Haven't had a chance to wear them in snow yet, but they are very comfortable, unlike other snow boots I have had in the past. Will be great for bad weather - very durable and nice looking. They are very chunky and wide at the toe, but also very comfortable, so minor problem.

Great boot. Kept my feet warm and dry in heavy, wet snow conditions. The top of the boot around the shin took a couple of wearings to break in. I ordered a half size up to accommodate hiking socks; perfect fit.

Love these boots! I am a Merrell fan already but these performed great in my snow shoes and alone on walks in the snow! They run true to size for Merrell, always a half size up for me. They are very warm with regular socks. When snow shoeing I added toe warmers on the top of my feet and had plenty of room and my feet never get cold. Not clunky like you might expect, and also pretty lightweight for this much boot. Nice job, Merrell.

I absolutely love these boots. They are as lightweight as I was hoping and feel so comfortable. I walk 2-3 miles in Wisconsin weather almost daily so wanted something to keep me dry and warm. They have certainly done that.

These are nice looking and seem well made. They are a little narrow in the toe-box for me, but I have bunions and Raynaud's syndrome, so I need a fairly wide toe. A previous review recommended ordering a half-size up. I usually wear a 9.5 in Merrell’s, and I ordered the 10, which is too long. I suspect the 9.5 would fit better. I am returning the boots, but I think they would work for most women.

These boots are very stiff, like ski boots. I had Merrel winterludes for the past 4 years and found them to be perfect for contending with my on going problems with tendinitis, they had a lot of support and stability and I could put orthodics in. The Whiteout boots are a bit taller and stiffer but I think they will work. I had to go up a half size, seems like shoes just keep getting smaller and narrower. I have had problems with Merrel's being to narrow across the ball of the foot, pinky toe area and some styles pinch there, so I am careful. These feel just a bit narrow in that area on my right foot. Glad Zappos has such an easy return policy, I ordered 2 pairs to make sure of the fit. I hope these boots are warm and comfortable because I am hiking or walking everyday in the winter.

This boot is the only one I have found that meets all my criteria for rugged, waterproof, well fitting, usuable for winter hiking and snowshoeing. I have a narrow (A) foot; nobody seems to make narrow boots. Theses are narrowest I have found. With an arch support, they fit well. I usually wear size 7, ordered 8, and they are just right with med-heavy socks. They are perfect for snowshoeing, with a ring at the front of the laces and a ridge for straps on the heel. The tread on the sole is good for hiking in light snow; the edge of the toe, although rounded, has good ridges to dig into snow. The heel is too rounded, however. These are very comfortable, like a good hiking boot. The only discomfort is from the stiffness of the top of the boot, rubbing against my leg. I'm hoping the leather will soften with use.
