I've been wearing Maui Jim's Typhoon model for 2 decades. My last pair were in their 5th year when I lost them. That broke my heart, as the Typhoon is no longer offered. The Typhoon's were hands down the finest pair of sunglasses I've ever owned. In the past 3 years, attempting to find a replacement, I've purchased 2 other pairs of Maui Jim's that cost a lot more than the Typhoon, but even though they also have neutral grey lenses, they just do not have the warm, color enhancing properties of those of the Typhoon. I assumed the difference was that they were plastic lenses which were, unlike the Typhoon's glass lenses, not gradient. In a third attempt to replace the Typhoons, I purchased this pair of Stingrays. They are comfortable and look great, but the lenses are not the same as the Typhoon's. They are less warm and the gradients are not as dark, so sunlight from above or reflected off of water is not attenuated as much. I also think that the polarization of the lenses is not quite as effective at reducing glare as those of the Typhoon's. These are fine sunglasses and better than many others I've tried including the pricier Maui models. Had I not had the Typhoons to compare these with I would have rated them 5 stars.

I live Maui Jim sunglasses. These are great, lightweight, and perfect for the Arizona sun. The lower rating of my review relates to the shipping. It was a day late, Zappos could not give me a new tracking number, and as of today, they’ve never updated my order online.

My pair are fairly new so I haven't had any issues with cracking, etc. This is more a review of the lens than the frame. I have a small head and these fit great. Frame and overall weight is outstanding. I can pop these up on my head and forget about them. Unfortunately by comparison with Maui Jim's glass lens offerings, these fall far short. There is noticeable loss of contrast in direct sunlight and high contrast lighting situations. In comparison to sunglasses with slightly larger lenses I also find the gap for the nose slightly distracting - e.g. if I'm turning my head left or right I notice the gap and/or perhaps the edge of the frameless lens. Not a huge issue but something to consider. I doubt I'd buy these again now I've found a glass lensed frame that fits me perfectly (Longitude) but if you do need/want a super lightweight pair of sunglasses I doubt you will find a better pair. Maui Jim - if you made this with a glass lens (is this even possible) I'd probably reconsider even if they weighed slightly more.

The Maui Jim website says these lenses are the same as the "neutral grey" lenses, but from what I saw, they are not as dark and let more light in. Nice glasses, but if you are looking for less glare and darker lenses, stick with the neutral grey lenses. I only wear Maui Jims and I like the look of these, but they are going back because they let in too much light.

Not pleased with the look or the very light lens, much more light comes through with these.

The glasses are light and comfortable as promoted but I just don't know the justification for the $169.00 price tag. Could someone tell me why? I'm not interested in the "cool" factor and I'm not sure I'd buy them again but I wanted to try something new. I'm used to polarized Ray Bans with glass lenses which feel more sturdy. The sales person in a sunglass shop highly recommended these over Ray Bans which was also sold in the same store. I ended up buying them online for the same price as in the store.

I bought this a month ago and broke twice. First the nose pad broke while wipping the lens. The second one the frame broke off and the screw still attached to it. Sunglass was made very light weight materials but flimsy. I am sending it back

I love the lightness of the glasses and the flexibility of the frames, but the lenses always crack where they attach to the frame by the nose piece. I'm about to send them in to be repaired. Unfortunately out of warranty.

I really enjoy wearing my MJ Lighthouse sunglasses, however the bridge also has broken a few times on me. these need lots of TLC, I wish they made a carbon bridge.

However just sent them back to repair, lens separated at the bridge, lens cracked slightly. I'm not sure this style will hold together for the long haul... but I called maui jim, they told me to send them in for repair, sent today April 17, I'll let you know if they fix them. This rating moves to five stars if they do.

I bought these in Feb of 2013. I have had to send them back for repairs three times. I'm a casual user and careful with them. As reviewers have stated, the frames are pretty flimsy, not durable as the description says. The first time the earpiece broke near the hinge . The second time, the lens cracked where it connects to the bridge. The third time, the bridge broke in the middle. The repairs have been quick and under the warranty but I'm worried that they'll break again when the warrant is up and I'll be out of luck. I really like the glasses. I just wish they held up.

I wore these to the pool and they were unlike any Maui Jim I have ever previously owned. The Maui Jim name on both of the outer sides of the arms came off. The writing/lettering on the inside of the frame and on the lenses stayed on. Aside from the lettering coming off, the glasses fit well and I liked the bronze lenses.

I've owned two pairs of these glasses and both have had the same issue where the lens connects at the bridge of the nose. It's a shame because I've really liked them. I'm not going back for a third time though, this is definitely a design flaw. I wish it could be resolved but I guess it's cheaper for the company to repair the ones that come back.

I am on my third pair of these in the last five years. Each pair has eventually ended up requiring warranty service to replace the lenses after they ended up with stress fractures by the bridge. The Maui Jim customer service has been excellent to deal with, and the prior three times replaced them easily. The sunglasses are quite amazing; very light, excellent optics, and really comfortable. I just wish they would last longer before failing. I would give these glasses five stars otherwise, but due to their quality track record I can only give them two stars

I would give these glasses 6 stars(out of 5) if it wasn't for the cracking. The lenses have now cracked twice by the nose bridge. I am sending them back again to be replaced. Otherwise I absolutely LOVE these glasses.

I agree with the previous review. These glasses were bought for me as a gift two months ago. I am always exstremely careful that they are put back in the hard case when I am not wearing them since they were expensive and a special gift. But to my disappointment I have found cracks in both lenses at the nose bridge. I love these glasses but totally disappointed that they do not perform well.

I bought these glasses 1 1/2 years ago and have already had the lenses repaired twice because the lens cracked at the bridge connection. I am extremely careful with my glasses, use them only for golf, and place them back in their hard case after the game. And, I only use them 6 months of the year. This is my 3rd pair of Maui Jim glasses (different styles), so obviously I love their glasses---just very disappointed in the quality of this style.

So here is the truth: they are nice, feel great, solid visibility, etc. But the lenses needed replacing almost immediately and the bridge also cracked way too easily. They are NOT durable.

I find it baffling that a device made to improve your view of the images of the world has a gradient of changing density on the lenses. So when you walk or look around the density of the images changes because there is a gradient on the lenses. It's very unnatural. I know that some sunglass have this. I have never owned a pair and am puzzled as it is not natural and distracting every step or head turn up or down the picture density slightly changes. If you work with images or are very aware of images you will notice it

The optics are great and they are very comfortable and light weight. The problem is that the lenses have repeatedly cracked at the bridge attachment under light use.

Love the lenses, but lenses always end up cracking at intersection of bridge. Obvious defect in design. I have had them repaired multiple times only to have repeated problem.

As many other reviews here described, these glasses are extremely fragile. Last year, the lens cracked at the nose piece. I had them repaired by Maui Jim and this year they cracked again at the same spot. This time, Maui Jim wants $128 to repair them. No thanks, that's almost the cost of a new pair of glasses. I'll just buy a more durable pair from a different manufacturer.
